there must be something about owning a chainsaw and cutting a few bits of firewood that means to some men that they can fell trees, and the tree will go where he wants because he's a hoomin with 2 legs (for now) and a dangly bit. I see some dumb ass ideas on the internet but the most ridiculous usually involve men, chainsaws, trees and logs...or both.

From watching other tree-cutting videos I learned: 1) Cutting a wedge from a tree doesn't always make it fall that way. It may release tension so it falls the other way. 2) One rope doesn't guarantee the direction a tree will fall, it can still fall to the left or right.

I have had 25-30 large tress cut down on my property in the last couple of years. I hired a PROFESSIONAL tree surgeon. He delimbed the trees and then cut the tree in 4 ft. sections and had a ground man pull the short sections in the desired direction. Only a very stupid person would do it any other way.
@hillbilly4christ638
@hillbilly4christ638 3 месяца назад
Well Jim, if you have structures and even buried lines in the way of felling a tree there are numerous ways to properly dispatch them. If you don’t have any of these things, then straight up felling is in order. Any arborist will tell you that ascending a tree and dismantling it is far more dangerous than ground felling. It is necessary to ascend and or use a bucket, but a lot of accidents happen up there. There is a boatload of knowledge to be acquired in either case and it takes a long time to acquire, however even the most seasoned arborists come up against a problem they have never seen before and sometimes it claims their life. So just because you hired people to do the work for you doesn’t mean any other way of doing things is stupid, it just means that you have never seen that before and I can tell you do not know what you are saying.

If you are going to try and control the fall with lines, you need to triangulate. I used two long chains which were much stronger than a manageable rope size. A chain looped around the tree as high as you can get it, then attach to that each long chain. Run the long chains out to well spaced anchor trees. Secured with more chain at the base of the anchor trees. Then a separate rope on a winch is attached to the tree at the chain loop. The winch is then anchored to the base of another tree. The chains will stop the tree falling sideways or falling backwards.

Also, a ratchet puller would be helpful to something heavier or more secure for an anchor other than a vehicle.

If they say that they do not have it on them than tell them to stop immediately until they can come up with it. A legit tree service will have absolutely no problem showing this very important certificate. If you pick one who hasn't had one either on their person or at all, kindly tell them to get the heck off your property and FAST !!!!

Most certainly, a desperate measure for sure, a decision that has to be made in a split second, because the tree is going to fall one way or another, this just chooses the direction of least possible destruction. I never understood why anyone would use a regular pickup, which does not have the mass needed, to pull trees down. Especially when they most often strap a high load to the rear of the truck where the vehicle weight is the least, which lifts the rear of the truck under engine load and decreases the traction. Strap to the front of the truck where the weight on the drive wheels will increase when the front of the truck lifts driving backwards.

I had a big pine tree cut down in my backyard. The guy said he had to cut it down in pieces from the top, because the weight of it hitting the ground in one piece would collapse my well. I asked him how much it weighed and he estimated it to be 10 or 12 tons. I never thought about the weight of it. That's why it's so humorous to see a couple of guys with a rope thinking they could determine where a tree that size would fall. No way. Even if they tied a truck to it, it was going to go down the way that it did.
