Dangerous Repair At Sugar Mill | Mega Mechanics | Spark

On this episode of Mega Mechanics, it’s a multimillion-dollar balancing act at hangar 3 for licence aircraft maintenance engineer Steven, that requires brains, brawn and nerves of steel. One false move could see 6 tonnes of pure jet power come crashing down. Repairing worn bearings on a 550-tonne excavator arm would hardly be considered a boring job for fitter and turner, Paul. It takes over 24-hours of preparation to set up, and just 30 very tense seconds to do the job and install the part.
Across Australia, the wheels of industry turn 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. These machines are tough and the teams of people running them are even tougher. From deep underground, to high in the sky, these heavy metal marvels are essential to our daily lives. But, what happens when these massive machines break down? Teams of mechanics, engineers, fitters, and boilermakers step up to battle against tight deadlines, in some of the harshest working environments on the planet.

Funny fact is that the majority of engine problems happen with new and rebuilt engines shortly after they are installed. That's why most airlines usually just install one at time like they're doing here.

If you are mechanically inclined, thorough and meticulous when needed you shouldn't have any problems. I know quite a few people who have done it in their early 30's up to 45ish. One of our best A&P's started when he was in his early 40's after a divorce. He does better work than a lot of the younger guys with twice the time on the job. What type of planes are you looking to work on? I fly for a aerial spray company that does a lot of crop dusting and firefighting so we've got a diverse fleet of aircraft. Some of the guys do really well here and others don't. So deciding what type of operation is also key to making it work and there's all kinds of things from GA planes on up to the big boys. Have you thought about what types you want to work on? Lastly even with the crisis there's still a huge backlog in GA electronics shops.

@@Joel-bj8om I'm a pilot with a little over 10,000 hours and also a CFI. Right now I'm current in the AT-802 on wheels and floats and the BAE-146-200. But with how things are going I don't know how long I'll remain current in the BAE because we did our sim work in Dublin and I don't think there's a Sim in the states. Over the years I've been fortunate to have flown quite an eclectic fleet of aircraft while I was building time to fly with the major airlines. But my time with a regional thankfully caused me to see the light. I started pulling banners in a Cub and Pawnee, patrolled powerlines and pipelines in a C206 and Maule M7 on big tires. I also spent some time in the Caribbean because of a girl where I flew a BN2 Islander, King Air's, Pilatus PC6 Porter and a PC12. I probably would've stayed, but a hurricane put the stop to things there and I took a job flying a Dash 8 and then a CRJ-200 for a regional. Thankfully I realized that the airlines weren't for me and I started working for a aerial spray company flying air tractors and loved it. When the company I work for now purchased the company they kept me on and I was flying the 802's and Aero Commander at first before I got in the BAE-146. I actually don't have my A&P yet but I'm about to go for it myself pretty soon because I just turned 40 and if I lost my medical I'd be up a creek without a paddle.
