Óðins Rune Song:
Óðinn hanged himself and impaled himself with a spear as a sacrifice to himself, for 9 days he hanged until he discovered the runes and their magic.

Lyrics (From havamal)
138. Veit ek, at ek hekk
vindga meiði á
nætr allar níu,
geiri undaðr
ok gefinn Óðni,
sjalfr sjalfum mér,
á þeim meiði,
er manngi veit
hvers af rótum renn.
139. Við hleifi mik sældu
né við hornigi;
nýsta ek niðr,
nam ek upp rúnar,
æpandi nam,
fell ek aftr þaðan.
English translation:
138. I know I hung
on the windfull tree
all nine nights,
with spear wounded
and given to Óðinn,
myself given to myself,
upon that tree,
that nobody knows
from what root it ran.
139. They gave me no bread
nor anything to drink;
carefully I looked down,
I picked up secrets,
took them screaming,
I fell again from there.

I find the recitation of the runes mingled with traditional instruments really therapeutic. And if it is your intention to induce into a trance like headspace you did a marvelous job that rather cures much. The visuals are gorgeous too. A nice contrast of sustained moving background and crisp changing runes. Not to mention the gorgeous tricolor-ed aesthetics. Yep, I'll be listening this one for months.

I believe that throat singing was to achieve altered states of consciousness; a bit like American Indian repetitive dancing. This is very cathartic...if I am using that word correctly. This music is more than music, and it steadies my brainwaves.

Throat singing was used in all cultures at some point, I think it's only natural for humans to do that I'm pretty sure our voice was our first "instrument" ever, and that throat singing "Ooh" was the first music ever
@radianhelix1864
@radianhelix1864 5 лет назад
The only way we'll be able to confirm if the Old Norse folk practiced some derivative of throat singing is if it leaves a clear tell-tale sign on the surviving tissues of the throat or bones (which is testable -- you could write a paper on it and get a grant.) The only evidence we have to go on is inference via pejorative descriptions from Tacitus up through Saxo Gammaticus and Ibn Fadlan, all of whom described old Germanic tribes and northerns writ-large as singing "like howling dogs," the same way they later described the Huns, Mongols, Tuvan, Turks, and some Sarmatians who we know for a fact practiced throat singing (and the tradition survived possibly more then 2000 years in those cultures, and they had contact with the north repeatedly through the Migration period and after, even becoming key players in the Sagas.) Faroese and Sami culture both have throat singing traditions that survive. As do most Greenland Inuit (but the songs are very sharp and a cyclical almost gasp, more like an actual "bark," and VERY fast, part of a game to see if you literally pass out or not while hyperventilating.) You can hear modern examples of those on youtube by searching Katajjacoustic -- from Canada, but sharing a common theme that would have been true of a wandering normadic people of the time as well, primarily as a tradition of women. The Khöömei of Alaska as well have something similar but it's not likely they were all chatting 2000-1500 years ago. Maybe 14,000 years ago, but that means very little for the viking age. Just something to keep in mind. Can't really say anything about this song. Just that I enjoy it, if it's anachronistic or not.

It's strange, but I find this song oddly relaxing. I was feeling really heavy with negative energy due to work and customers being assholes. But listening to this, I feel almost renewed and at ease. It's strangely meditative, as well as empowering. The drums, the vocals, the instruments; it's just amazing! I feel like I can step out of myself for a short time and just let the music move me and forget the world for a moment. I also feel like a bit of a badass while listening to this, like the world and whatever negativity comes my way won't break me. Thank you for your amazing work!

To be fair I think that's a modern take on things that sound "ancient". We have no idea of how iron age scandinavian music sounded, but we know that mongolian throat singing sounds cool and ancient and magic so probably the musicians that did this were inspired by mongolian music.

This is missing 142. In lyrics description... goes as follows for anyone interested what the rest of the lyrics mean. 142. Rúnar munt þú fínna ok ráðna stafi mjök stóra stafi mjök stinna stafi er fáði fimbulþulr ok gørðu ginnregin ok reist Hroptr rögna 142. Runes may you find and advising staves; Many strong staves, Many stout staves; Painted by the mighty Loremaster and made by great Gods, and carved by the Roarer* of the Gods * Hroptr or "Roarer" is sometimes translated at "Utterer", "Speaker", or "Sage". Odin of course, is all these things - however the Old Norse word Hroptr shares the same Germanic root-meaning as the English "Roar". Not only is Odin described as a speaker or teacher, but one with powerful, resounding voice; in verse 145. He is called "Thundr", literally the "Thunderer".
