Wow finally I had a chance to sit down and watch this whole thing and I'm impressed. Your attention to detail and meticulous recreation is just fantastic. Seeing how you had the LFO setup with MF pedals was pretty interesting as I have no hands on experience with them. You absolutely crushed the drive tones I closed my eyes during the chorus and I'd almost have sworn I was listening to it normally. The solo was spot on too the fuzz really nails that solo tone and you played all the right Frusciante improv licks, even the wah sounded just like the originals. I will say though that the clean tone just didn't fit for me I thought it was a little dark sounding. That Moog setting was pretty damn good though on the clean setting. All in all this was an awesome recreation and pretty spot on for everything to my knowledge would love to see you pick another song and do something like this.

Thank you so much! Your comments are always so helpful as you really take the time to actually watch the video and formulate your thought. :) When I forced myself to upload weekly I always rushed certain things, like the tone. But now when I upload when an idea naturally pops up, I can let the idea grow more freely. I pretty much iterated this over and over until there wasn't anything that bothered me too much. Before I would have just ignored creations things that bothered me in order to be able to upload in time. So it was really fun to put a lot of focus on tweaking knobs. :) I think the CE-1 clone with the input buffer is the key to getting the right tone from the DS-2. It blew my mind the first time I heard it in the room, with everything set up the way it should be (silver jubilee + not using FX loop + ce-1 clone + maxed out ds-2). In the solo I started doing it like the studio version. Then I also wanted to illustrate how John sometimes added the fuzzrite, and the fact that he did a lot of improv, which is why I changed the solo from the studio version towards the end (before the wah). I agree the clean/light crunchy tone is the weakest part. However, are you comparing it to studio or live version? If you compare with studio then my version is indeed WAAY to dark. But if I compare it to for example the fuse studios performance, I think it sounds closer, but it's definitely far from perfect. In general, I have found that John's live tone during his later years with RHCP was extremely dark. The dark tone made single notes sound better to me, which is important for the lowpass filter effect I think. Thank you! Maybe I should do another one. Do you got any ideas? I think Dani California was the perfect song because John let's all the effects interact with his playing so much. The pedal work on this song is almost more creative than the guitar playing itself, which is quite cool to me. :)

@@Vigi Now that you mention it I was comparing the "clean" tone to the studio version but after comparing to the live versions I do agree your tone is very very close. The ce1 definitely totally changes the way the drive pedals hit the front of the amp and it sounds awesome! I agree Dani California is definitely the most effective heavy song. I always thought his approaches on Animal Bar with the way/volume swells was cool and he did some interesting combinations on Death of a Martian as well. I understand completely about uploading less, a lot of time is needed to make a quality video and the effort you put in shows, I've really been enjoying these last several videos.

Only thing about Animal Bar and DoaM is that those are not live songs. I guess people are more interested in live effects since that is more straight forward and more practical to replicate. I’m very glad to hear that! :)

Hey @Vigi, I’ve been following your work for a while and I want to thank you for all the analysis and info over the years. Due to lack of funds, I’m actually using the EHX LPB-1 as my “CE-1” preamp and I’m really happy with the sound and compression regarding DS2/WH10 with it set at around 1130. I also bought the line 6 M13 instead of the separate colourful boxes but I just upgraded to the HX Effects which includes all those legacy models and more. They just released 3.1 firmware with the Moog Murf named “Asheville”. I just tested today and I was shocked at how great it sounded. I’d love to see you test it against the original. Thanks again and I hope you’re well. Cheers

I decided on the Fuzz Factory, and then found out he actually used that as well, haha. :D But I have only used it for experimental purposes, not to nail a Frusciante tone. Not yet at least.

Nice video! Where in the chain did you place the Dyna Comp? I’m currently strugling wether placing it before or after my distortion pedals
@Vigi
@Vigi 4 года назад
Thank you! Hmm, I don't remember. I have mostly used the compressor pedal on high sensitivity to get that cool BSSM like effect. Therefore, I have mostly used the pedal on its own, without combining it with other pedals like distortion. So I haven't analysed this too much actually. What are your thought about this? How do you use the compression pedal? :)
@0marenllamas
@0marenllamas 4 года назад
I’m currently building my pedalboard again so I rearranged everything. A couple months ago I placed it before my distortion pedals, being the first pedal in my chain and I left it that way since I started recording music with my band in a studio. But now I’m just trying to get that Frusciante sound and I haven’t found yet anything about placing the compressor before or after distortion. Some friends made suggestions to place it after, so I left mine after distortions. Currently my chain is polytune, DS-2, fuzz factory, micro amp, hoof fuzz, double barrel OD, 1927 king comp, WH10, FM4, phase 90, TR-2, flashback 2, DL4, CE-5 and HOF 2. I’ll probably just wait to try all the pedals again in this order and check what suits best for me
@Vigi
@Vigi 4 года назад
Interesting! Well, John has never really used the compression pedal in his live rig so that’s why there’s no info about this.
@ToppaliniTube
@ToppaliniTube 2 года назад
check out new triungulo labs video if you haven't already. they explain that you have to invert phase in signal chain after ds2-fuzzrite combo to get the tone right otherwise it sounds weird like that. i'd also be really interested in a good method to do that because they didn't explain how to do it without that certain pedal they show. and there's a forum post i read on that a bit ago but he also didn't explain how to invert phase in your pedal chain

How hard do you usually hit the strings when you play the verse? For some reason I can't seem to cut through very well unless I really strum hard. Specifically the lowest strings. they just get drowned out by the bass in the backing track if I play with my normal force.
@Vigi
@Vigi 4 года назад
It’s a good question. I think you need to strum in with a certain attack and have a king of “snap” to it, in order to create a rhythmic effect. I put emphasis on the lower strings, if remember correctly. The progression is really basic. The right hand is the one creating the magic.
@BRZguy
@BRZguy 4 года назад
Thanks for your reply! I always did it where the low strings were more muted, and the rest of the strings got a lot of the attack. That sounded good in person and when I played over the backing track, but once I tried to record over the backing track it just got totally lost and I was baffled. I've just lately been realizing how much John would change his picking attack. Something that I never really thought twice about. I always thought it was more about having your general picking attack to where it's broken up, but you really have to play more dynamically than you'd think.

Hey Vigi! Huge fan. Could you please help? When I try to maximize the ds-2 level volume it's too loud.
@Vigi
@Vigi 5 лет назад
Thank you! Set your amp clean, then use for example Triungulo Lab CE-1 Ensemble Crunch, turn up the level until you get a slight Frusciante crunch. Because of this boost, your signal gets compressed, meaning that even though the DS-2 is loud, the compression makes the overall volume stay the same (the ds-2 should be as loud as when you strum the hardest without the ds-2). I use Triungulo Lab Chorus Ensemble to achieve this in this video. Hope that helps.

I am sorry to dissapoint you or all the fans here, but here is my humble conclusion. I am not hater, i appreciate the hard work put into this video , and i leave a like on this video, even subscrie the channel, but i have something to say. Are you sure you exported your audio correctly ? I am positive, som I am laying in my bed for third day straight now, but I decided to get up and get headphones, to not judge your work from laptop speakers. I even turned on my desktop and listened for the third time on real high quality speakers... and I am sorry but it seems like your fans are quite music deaf, or you really didnt make a good job with recording and exporting. You have all the reissues, even original jumbilee, all the equipment and yet you are totally off the tone. I am pretty curious where did you get all the money for this, but again, i am not hater, it just seems to me that you are more like student that hard worker, if you now what i mean. You completely uderestand Johns tone, you studied a lot, i can see, but yet it is not good at all. I recommend you to use your ears more, not just set everything like something you saw on photo somewhere. Your skills are far more teoretical that practical, and thats a pity. First thing that I want to point out is on 12:56 or 14:06 . This is not Johns cleanish tone at all. Its far more distorted and its dark and moody. Second shock right after that is 13:02 with the DS-2 turned on. Are you really satisfied with this ? Are you sure you are not lying yourself ? Its harsh, sticky and sharp disgusting tone, that should be warm and clear. I am a big Johns fan since i was a kid, and i know his tone well. I am sorry but i am being honest about this... I listened even to demo, to find out if you used just the camera mic on this video, and recorded the demo correctly, but unfortunately, again, dissapointed. I appreciate this hard work but i am sad to say this, you all here are in a huge self-deludion.

@Vigi 3 года назад
If I remember correctly I think I had to cover the amp + SM57 with a sheet in order to avoid the mic picking up my strums acoustically, hehe. :) You see I cannot play too loud since I don't want to disturb my surrounding. So that might explain why it sounds a little moody. I think the DS-2 sounds alright in the demo. But it's completely fine if you don't like it, of course. ☺️ I can also mention I like the new amp setup I have now. I actually find the speaker in the "original" 2554 amp used here sounds very different to my new reissue. You can watch my comparison between the two in case you're interested: watch?v=khlc3jy_v6Y It's a good reminder you brought up about balancing theory and practice. And yes, it's very important to trust what you hear a go from that. Good point! This video is almost two years old now and I do see room for improvement. That makes me happy because I see that as a sign that I'm improving over time. For example if you take a look at the intro in my brand new video, I think the sound turned out pretty good. :) But in two years I might think differently once again, haha. :D Anyway, I'll leave a link in case you're interested: watch?v=jmwhBaPOIXc Cool that you're a Frusciante fan to. Always fun to connect with people who likes his music. 😃 Yes, self delusion is indeed something I want to tackle as much as I can, and comments from other people can be really good to help me see my blind spots. If you take a look at my newer videos, do you have any practical advice on how I can improve, or point out any blind spots that I can work on? 😀 Take care! 🙏

@@Vigi I am really happy how humble you are :) I really didnt want to dissapoint you or your work, I also forget to mention that the modulation effects where great and I liked them a lot :) I was talking about recording because me myself, found a great tone several times but had a very hard times to actually record it with mic :D I also chcecked your new videos and I like them a lot! Thats why I subscribed. And yes, the time difference... the more you practice the more your thinking is changeing. It happened to me several times, a thout my tone is great, played a lot and was satisfied, then left the house for a weekend and when I came back, it was horrible :DD Overall I find this video very very educating, and with a little much of experience with shooting videos, i can imagine that this 23 min video took several hours to capture, produce, export and upload.
