Greatest actor of all time hilarious that he could have one another Oscar or two but retired and became a show cobbler in the Wicklow mountains in Ireland
Ever seen Ed Harris' in-between takes during the filming of "The Rock?" That guy is freaking intense as shit. Really drops down into character like Daniel Day-Lewis does.
I was so confused, having not seen the movie, when they kept calling him Daniel I thought this was a case where the actor is throwing a tantrum with others on the set, glad to see that’s not it at all, he’s just genuinely terrifying in his portrayals.
Before I saw the movie and realized the character's name is ALSO Daniel, I saw this short and I thought DDL was actually being an A hole to the other actors between takes as part of the method acting lol
There's a reason they share a name. The actual character's book name is James Arnold Ross. The director actually wrote the character specifically for Lewis.
I think he becomes so immersed in a character and story ..... I think DDL says what He thinks the character would say in the same situation...Masterful Actor. 🤔😐
@@dontcare7086He's always been a beanpole. That's why he pulls (pulled) off intimidation so well: he's scrawny, but he carries himself like a powerful political dynast who can do terrible things to anyone in broad daylight with wholly concealed butcher's tools and get away with it. And THEN give iconic speeches in Manhattan about why he was right to do so.
Keep in mind, he's one of the greatest method actors of our time because he will absolutely live a role he's given for a time before filming and only give up the bit until his part is done. It truly is an art.
He is fucking MAD! BEST ACTOR EVER. I haven't seen any play like his. He lives the character, I really wonder how this madness effect his real personality. Such a master!
It's supposed to be one of the hardest things to do as an actor. To play such a seriously fucked-up asshole who is really revealing himself under the influence can't be easy.
What an actor.Everything he does is mesmerizing. He’s retired for now but when that exceptional script shows up get ready to see greatness on screen again .
@@SmcdMcd-d2k"Breaking character" refers to losing the emotions of the character within the scene/bit that you are doing, for example laughing at your own joke that is supposed to be delivered seriously. Here, DDL loses the drunken madness that Daniel is supposed to be in the midst of, but DDL is still "in character" as Daniel. Think of method acting being like the character an actor is playing has showed up to set and is working with you, instead of it being like the actor behaves as if they are being filmed at all times on set. If DDL were in "full character" at all times, he would've been impossible to work with. Look at Jared Leto as the joker sending people animal carcasses in the mail as an example of always being in "full character," and the damage that causes to the production.
@@SmcdMcd-d2k no, no i think i outlined how a method actor can break character while remaining in character, thus continuing to method act, pretty well
They said his wife left the house with the kids while he was in method character for Bill The Butcher because he was so scary! I bet they loved him as Lincoln tho!
I think very little is known about the man behind the character. You see nothing of him between films. No interviews, no articles, no paparazzi shots. Well I haven’t, anyway
This character, and William cutting from Gangs of New York are probably the 2 best examples of acting in the modern era… honestly no one in Hollywood can hold a candle to Daniel Day Lewis.
One of the truest actors of our time. He is so focused and professional it’s scary. His eyes are always the key and speaks volumes of his acting skills. Just a great actor period!!
Most Brits, save for a few, can perform a convincing American accent, whichever it be, but DDL is one of a handful to actually inhabit the voice and subtle mannerism that it no longer is a performance.
The single best movie. There's no acting that's ever been better by a single performer. There's no soundtrack that's ever synced up more perfectly to the screenplay. The pacing is perfect. The arc is perfect. It's the ultimate story of human endeavor and the sacrifice that comes with it. It will be watched for generations.
@@LoXHumaN Mainstream sure has gotten worse, but the truly great films have never been have never been very success ful, almost every PTA film were flops for instance. Most Scorsese film barely made their money back too, only in the early 2000s did he start to make some serious money, and now Killers of The Flower Moon looks to be one of his most successful films. People really don't seem to understand that a lot of the movies we love today, were not terribly successful in their time and only appreciated years later.
This is probably the single most surreal, captivating and engaging performance I’ve ever seen in film. It’s almost exhausting to watch. DDL is an incredible actor. He ate every scene alive in that movie.
The Last of the Mohicans came out when I was 12, and he has been my favorite actor since then and remains my favorite film too ❤ Perhaps one day he will return to acting, maybe directing?
One of the few actors who has my undivided attention. Most time i flick between subtitles and the video as i watch, but i cannot stop watching Daniel Day.
I just watched the fight scene in gangs of new york and it's still a good movie but you can really start to tell the generational divide because rewatching, you can see all the 90's style editing choices. Basically what i am saying is your comment is accurate af.
I remember seeing DDL in "The Bounty" Mid 1980's-Great Movie. Then When I saw him play Bill the Butcher, I was Blown Away. Then I saw There will be Blood & this guy can make me Suspend Reality & Actually Believe his Characters. One of the Best Actors out there. And he's not a Hollywood Weirdo so that's a Plus.
First saw DDL in “My Left Foot”, he was incredible as Christy Brown, a young Irish lad born with cerebral palsy and trying to make his way through life. If you haven’t seen it, you’re missing a powerful Oscar winning performance that will gut you raw. And of course, a few years later when DDL came out starring as the unjustly convicted Irishman Gerry Conlon in “In The Name Of The Father” (brilliant soundtrack!), I knew I was a fan for life!
The best example of the double-edged blade that is method acting. Yes, it may help get a truly fantastic performance, but in-between takes and on set in general it can become a literal nightmare...
I'm gonna get flamed for this but I always thought this kind of behavior to be ridiculous. You're getting paid millions to pretend to be someone else. Get over yourself. I like guys like Michael Gambon who don't take themselves that seriously and just say that it's always just them reading the lines in the script. If i had an actor go all method on me I'd turn into that j Jonah Jameson laughing meme or Stockton slap them.
@@tonypaellatrue but some would say if you’re paying them all that money it’s incumbent upon them to stay in character as they are taking the role very seriously thus getting your moneys worth. just depends on who does it. Dey Lewis is doing it for the movie and the world building. Jared Leto is stroking his ego.
@@tonypaellaYour opinion is just dumb. He's on set, working... he didn't go to the guys place of work. He didn't go to his house. He didn't go to a restaurant. They're on set and he's trying to stay in character while money is being spent for him to be on set and be in character while people are talking about a world outside of the set, outside of the character, outside of the story, completely distracting him and ruining the hours of preparation it takes to get in the mindset to be the character. It was the passive aggressive loudmouth that was being ridiculous. Not the MOST TALENTED ACTOR EVER. Would you go up to Davinci and start blabbing about the tabloids like an arrogant loudmouth while he's at his canvas trying to work and stay focused?
this guy is just plain passion, i don't how much he's studied his craft or anything like that but i think he's just full of passion he MEANS everything he does, he must make some goddamn good shoes
@@MBicknell enjoy you lucky bastard. ive seen everything, tasted everything, give me something new and good!!! theresso much shite out there, diamonds like this are few and far between.
@@leonconnelly5303, I'm sorry, silly? There are a lot of descriptors one could use for that film but silly is not one of them. Everyone gets a voice online, I guess.
@@pheasantpluckI just watched the movie. This bit of film was cut from the dinner scene with Tilford. The print that went to film is a bit different, but the idea is the same.
@@amjh4lah809 Hahaha. I might agree if he hadn’t made some horrible role choices in the past 15 years. But ultimately, De Niro doesn’t have the range Daniel Day Lewis has. DDL is untouchable, in my opinion.
@leopetaccia1012 "Doesn't have the range"? Yet, I couldn't see ddl doing a comedy, like De Niro has. Yes, ddl is an incredible actor, obviously one of the best to ever do it. But De Niro is untouchable and the GREATEST to ever do it, imo.
The Amount of acting range Daniel Day Lewis has is so incredible that it's terrifying. Like look at his eyes! That's committing to a character right here!
Not deleted but the dialogue in this take is completely cut from the scene in the movie. In the movie he just watches them talk from a far and then gets up and walks over to talk to HM Tillford.
I watched it not too long ago after people were saying it's the greatest movie of all time. I found it absolutely boring as shit, but the acting was amazing
