Daniel Lanois - In The Studio

Daniel Lanois needs no introduction.
His influential blend of atmospheric sound design and staggeringly beautiful Americana has left its mark on the countless greats he helped make greater. Peter Gabriel’s So, Bob Dylan’s Time Out Of Mind, U2’s The Joshua Tree - those are his introduction. Lanois recently invited us to his Los Angeles estate for an intimate performance before turning around and delivering a live mix for the camera. It’s an incredible thing to witness, which you can above.

The way he plays that steel guitar so beautifully and smoothly, makes it seem like the guitar is a sentient being on its own and is howling its story. 5th time I’m watching this now, stunned every time.

if you are wondering, don't be skeptical when he starts calling out the notes, just keep watching. this isn't a jam in the classical sense: it's his vision for what the sound is going to be, so he is acting as conductor. the way he uses the console halfway through is pretty slick.

he isn't "using" the console.. he's playing it like an instrument... ;-)

I was skeptical and didn't really know what to expect. This guy at work hands me a disk and says "listen to this"...so I did and I got hooked pretty quickly. Love the creative artistry and both the melodic and harmonic structure of this work is amazing. It's like the "music of the spheres". I had an incredible conscious OBE soon after listening to "Goodbye to Language".

Daniel Lanois music is so interesting and I believe he has reached the highest level.. Hard for me to explain but It sounds like the Canadian forest, the steel towns, the bayous, the deserts. It’s a landscape that triggers emotions and it’s a genre per se. To make a comparison when I listen to some jazz records I see the hustle and bustle of NYC, the streets the lights of a town that never sleeps. 🙏

Pure magic in that studio. So inspiring to watch this video. The sounds triggered here. The movements of the musicians. The stirring emotions from the strings of that steel pedal guitar. This unfolding beauty. It's intensely inspiring. Daniel Lanois rocks! Thanks so much for this one!

Wasn't that aware of this guy until I watched a few Eno things on you tube recently. I love slide and steel guitar, but also electronic "treatments" to use an Eno-ism. Steel guitar is an instrument I want to try. I used to have a big bunch of reverbs and tape echos with assorted guitar pedals, and the sounds you can get with such simple (compared with modern stuff) equipment, are remarkable. The very simple device on steel guitar that makes a big difference, is the volume pedal. Very nice stuff.

Very very cool. My co-worker turned me on to this disc "Goodbye to Language" and at first I was thinking "oh great..more New Age atmospherics". Then as the music progressed, I was drawn in...almost hypnotically. Does this music contain hidden binaural beats that can induce altered states of consciousness? Anyway, I love this and am listening to it over and over again. There is a lot going on here and it is very moving. The melodic structure ropes you in and transports you in to the core of the record. Amazing work! I had a conscious OBE after listening to this music for 2 hours. I'm a guitarist and amateur composer and producer.and been playing guitar and keys for 40 years...and want to jam with Lanois and Deluca!

Check out his tiny desk concerts live performance on youtube as well or whatever it's called. That one blew me away. Calling out the notes is a little different, still classic Lanois sound though, what with the slidey steel guitar and such. Amazing producer and musician. One of my all time favorite artists. His latest lp Flesh and Machine is a solid album too imo.

could also be something like an ebow?
@paulweber9945
@paulweber9945 7 лет назад
An e-bow is an effect that is held in the palm of the hand. If Daniel had been using one it would be very evident. BTW a console slide guitar doesn't need an e-bow as it has more than ample sustainnnnnnnn and the volume envelope is done via foot pedal.
@Oblique.strategy
@Oblique.strategy 7 лет назад
Its the EHX Freeze Pedal. He's built a small remote for the foot switch of the pedal and attached to the pedal steel. The Freeze samples small pieces of audio - kind of like a hod pedal on a piano.
