It was an almost magical evening when i discovered this song.House all to myself, had the tv on for background-VH1 or something,i don't know-and out of the blue, this song.after all this time,it still has the same power.i can listen to it over and over
I just saw For the Beauty of Winona in a CD shop circa 93 I guess. I've loved Lanois ever since. He's known for producing big name bands but he should be embraced, firstly, for classic songs like this.
first time I really listened to this was with a friend traveling up to the Lakes in the Interior of BC I slept in a moon lite room over looking one of the lake s very haunting and beautiful
VTtom62 It's an all-American mixed bag. Some of the workers claimed to be Italian-immigrants, some of them claimed to be Irish-immigrants, some of them claimed to be Canadiens, some of them claimed to be Mohawks... They built it.
Wasn't the version that they took offline for so long? Copyright issues or something? I am just so glad it's back!!!! One of my favorites. Is it filmed in his New Orleans studio? God, I love this. Thanks abc. xo
Yes, I recall when VH1 was running that video in the 90s, I couldnt believe it when I recognized the bridges. Him being from that part of Canada and doing the Acadie album in cajunland was like closing the loop on the Acadian epic, lol
there something on him that remember me, Pierre Bensusan the Great singer and guitarist behind some track of Yoko Kanno on Cowboy Bebop. This song is very close to some U2 Tracks Daniel made, i think.
The "Caledonia" reference in this song has confused me for years. FYI: according to Wikipedia early maps of the fur trade era show the Okanagan River as the "Caledonia River", a name conferred as it was the connecting route between the Columbia District and the New Caledonia Fur District (which began north of Okanagan Lake)
Caledonia is a town in southern Ontario, along the Grand River (the "river Grand", as mentioned in the song). A few years back there were native blockades, due to a land claim. The Grand is the longest river in Ontario. There's quite a bit of native influence throughout the area, and it's pretty close to the Six Nations Reserve, which used to be a fantastic place to buy tax free smokes, although I don't know if it still is, as I quit smoking quite a while ago. Anyway, it's a beautiful area, come on through if you get a chance!
eswainz Adding to what Grainhopper I said, it's also important to note that Caledonia is just 15 minutes south of Hamilton, where Daniel Lanois lived when he started recording music.
+Andrew Fineberg I once harassed Bono (tapped him on the shoulder) he was charming a blond female at the Rum Boogie Cafe... later the whole band walked into the club (without him) after I asked him to please come see my band. I remember The Edge and Adam Clayton. How they were arranged - sitting at the bar... of Lfayette's Corner on Beale Street. Maybe I should paint it one day. Larry Mullen - yea They gave us the piece sign
