Testing Quinacridone Lilac on its own and in purple mixes, comparing with other Quinacridones in the range. In the video I keep referring to "Winsor Blue Red Shade"... Sorry, old habit... I am using "Phthalo Blue Red Shade" these days...
Here is a link to my blog post if you want to see the tests more closely: sandrinemaugy.fr/2019/06/20/pigment-spotlight-testing-daniel-smith-quinacridone-lilac/
Please note that this review reflects my own opinion, nobody's paying me to test this paint.

I'm so happy I found your informative video. I'm wild for Quinacridones and the Lilac is the one I am missing. I won't be missing it for long. Thank you so much. I really enjoyed your video. It came to me at the perfect time in my art journey.

Thank you, this is exactly what I was looking for… Lilac sits right in the middle of all of them, so that tells me it would make the perfect primary mixer. even better than magenta. There are a lot of artists that swear by PR122

Thanks for this video ❤ It was an excellent one, answered so many questions for me ☺️! Btw the way you talked about finding the right purple for you amused me. You talked about it almost like someone might talk about finding the right partner for them 😂 Can't be dull, must be reliable etc.... x) I've been trying to find the right magenta for me, so I absolutely relate to this search 😄

Your comment made me laugh out loud! Thank you :) I have been let down by pigments in the past, which left me with trust issues :DDD I hope you find your dream Magenta!

You are such as an inspiring artist! Thank you so much for this well-rounded review of quinacridone colors! I think I love Quin Fuchsia. It looks so delicious but I am not sure this color is versatile enough (I love painting red, pink and purple flowers and fruits)

Thank you :) I love Quinacridone Fuchsia too. It's richer than Carmine (which we were talking about in another comment thread) but still quite red.

Thanks for comparing Q Lilac to the other Q reds and pinks. I think DS chose the name Lilac because all the other magenta-like color names were taken--odd there aren't more names for magenta. I have Q Rose and Q Magenta, I may swap Q Magenta out for Q Lilac when I finish this tube.

I loved your comparisons of the Quinacridone watercolors by Daniel Smith. It helped me figure out which colors I would like to try out. I am leaning towards Quinacridone rose, lilac, and violet. Thank you so much for sharing!

You're welcome! If it helps, I have all three of them and I use Quina Lilac all the time, Quina Rose not so much (I usually end up using Quina Pink) and Quina Violet I pretty much never use...

Daniel Smiths Carbazole Violet (red shade) is the most lightfast of the PV23s. The bluer versions are less lightfast. If I want it bluer, I just add French Ultramarine or another blue. Ofcourse, as with most watercolour paints, the drying shift is there but it’s the best purple I’ve tried so far.
@AtelierSandrineMaugy
@AtelierSandrineMaugy 3 года назад
I agree it's the least bad option if you wish to use a purple pigment. But if I have to add a blue anyway, I'd rather start with Quinacridone Lilac, which is more saturated. The first paint chemist to invent/find a saturated violet pigment is in to make a fortune! :DD

On my screen, Quinacridone Fuchsia looks more red than the colors next to it. Should it go between Quin Red and Quin Rose instead?

thanks for this, been mulling over getting this colour. have you ever seen Winsor Newton Quin Magenta also made with PR122 and how similar is it compared to Quin Lilac? in performance as well

@@AtelierSandrineMaugy did you find out ? I'm debating ordering as well. WNP and Opera Rose and American Journey Wild Fuschia have tbe same pigment number. Onky less purple. More pink. WNP is the closest.

there is the option, to use ultramarine violett in the mix. it does work I find
@AtelierSandrineMaugy
@AtelierSandrineMaugy Год назад
Thank you, Ultramarine Violet works well in mixes but it does granulate so only works for some subjects. As long as one is aware of that, it's a good pigment. (Although not saturated enough on its own for bright purple flowers)
@nursen2106
@nursen2106 Год назад
@@AtelierSandrineMaugy I will try to mix it. I am sure, I once did that. I must add, I am no professional in any way. but lately I did experiment with a lto of mixes. and when you mix a smooth paint with a granulating one, both together most of the time loose the granulation. but I will try it at the weekend and come back to you. I don't remember anymore, because that was at some time last year and in fact, I never again had the need to mix that sort of violett. but maybe that does't say anything, because I already have other violetts

How does Quin Lilac compare to Opera Pink in the Daniel Smith brand? Both are PR122, and I'm guessing it will be the florescent nature of the Opera pigment. Your thoughts?
@AtelierSandrineMaugy
@AtelierSandrineMaugy 3 года назад
Hello, I am replying to this again, as YT erased all my previous replies when I changed my channel name... Opera Pink has a fluorescent dye added to it, which gives it the extreme saturation but will fade very quickly, turning the paint a slightly grey pink. Quinacridone Lilac is a much better paint. I would stay away from any paint with the word "opera" in it :)

Still, I wonder, how relevant are these differences in a composition, made with mixes anyway? Considering, one in the first place, tries to make it, with what is on hand

Sorry, I don't understand your question...
@nursen2106
@nursen2106 Год назад
@@AtelierSandrineMaugy in the final composition. would it really mattter? Or maybe this is only to consider when a person has a small pallett and wants to expand? but even then...? not sure in this case. considering one does mix colours with what one has anyway. how relevant could it be? maybe, if there is a special colour one really wants to achieve and it is hard to mix. but is it the case here? the fuchsia and one of the others left or right? they are fine as well. even on there own. maybe I question this, because I have so many paints, that I got me, because I thought I need so many different for different important reasons. now I wonder, when exactly is the moment, that a special colour becomes relevant? I think it is selbdom the case. but of course, I am no professional and all that. maybe for professional botanical artists? but is that so? for those extraordinary african flowers in intense violett?
@AtelierSandrineMaugy
@AtelierSandrineMaugy Год назад
I don't think I would have all these magentas in my palette. The point in the video is more to compare them in order to choose the best one(s). Having said that, in botanical art it is important to have the right colour. If I use the wrong magenta, some people looking at the painting might not notice, but I will know, and it will drive me nuts :D This is partly why I love painting flowers so much. I get to play with lots of different pigments to depict all the bright colourful hues.
