Danielle Allen and Anthony Jack discuss Jack's first book "The Privileged Poor" at the book launch held at the American Academy of Arts & Sciences.
In their discussion, Allen and Jack explore the experiences of lower-income undergraduates at the country’s top colleges and how campus cultures and policies can better support these students.
Danielle Allen is the James Bryant Conant University Professor at Harvard University and the Director of Harvard’s Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics. She is also the principal investigator for the Democratic Knowledge Project, a distributed research and action lab at Harvard University. A political theorist who has published broadly in democratic theory, political sociology, and the history of political thought, she is widely known for her work on justice and citizenship in both ancient Athens and modern America.
Anthony Abraham Jack is a Junior Fellow at the Harvard Society of Fellows and Assistant Professor of Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He holds the Shutzer Assistant Professorship at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. His research documents overlooked diversity among lower-income undergraduates: the doubly disadvantaged - those who enter college from local, typically distressed public high schools - and the privileged poor - those who do so from boarding, day, and preparatory high schools.
