Arirang Alone symbolizes the history of Korea and split and longing for the North and South to be one. The songwriter’s parents had to leave two sons and a daughter in North Korea during the war. His father’s dying wish to him was “when Korea reunites, go find your older brothers and sister and tell them that their parents did not abandoned them”. Where everyone in the audience sings along is where Sohyang brought in the original Arirang lyrics and melody. It's a very emotional patriotic song for all Korean's. It's considered to be the unofficial national anthem.
@@TheSeeking2know the original folk song that is based off (just called Arirang) is an old song with many regional variants. But they all use the word Arirang (which nobody is quite sure of the exact meaning) and certain melodic components.
Korea has suffered a lot since early 1900s... China, Russia, US, UK and Japan attacked Korea and now divided into two countries...As a Korean, Arirang always make me cry....
Sohyang is held in very high esteem in Korea. She’s turned down recording deals and just works on things that she chooses. Her backstory is sad, she has battled cancer leaving her infertile and yet is so uplifting with her voice. I love her Whitney Houston covers. She kills it
Arirang is a traditional Korean song with hundreds of versions. In particular, this Arirang alone is about the wish for the reunification of divided Korea. The exact etymology of Arirang is unknown. In Korea, Arirang is described often as the word "Han" which means sadness that has been built deep in your heart. So as a Korean, I feel Arirang this way... [To hide the sad sobbing scream of 'Arrrrr~', Switching it to the musical expression 'ang'] In other words, Arirang sounds like holding back tears. Therefore, Arirang hill is not a real thing, it means the ongoing hardship while swallowing sadness. This song expresses a very sad midsummer night's dream perfectly with So-hyang's performance and facial expressions harmonized with the arrangement and production. It consists of three main parts. : Sadness(Reality), Joy(Dream or Illusion), Sadness(back to the reality) 1. The song begins by singing about the [reality] that the South and the North are on a path of hardship. 2. In the climax of "and it became one", it goes into a [illusion]. Baekdu is the northernmost mountain in North Korea, and Halla is the southernmost mountain in South Korea. In other words, it's impossible now to travel from mountain to mountain. This illusion gradually develops into joy. (most painful part because I know it just a dream) 3. Then, In the last A cappella part, it wakes up from its dream and returns to reality. Really heart braking song for Koreans.
You should really react to her most technical 7-minute performance of "Everyone". Even she said that it's her hardest one ever. I'm sure you'll love it. #SubscriptionSquad
@@rivejay Me too say me too regarding captions for "Everyone". And do consider reacting to "Everyone", Danielle. I'm repeating myself and others here, for *The Algorithm* and *engagement.*
This was her arrangement/cover on a 600 yo traditional song with arround 60 versions and over 3000 variations. The song is protected by UNESCO as part of Korean national herritage (twice for North and South Korea). Her arrangement and performance are from my point of view, total materpieces.
Yup, "Everyone" is a tour de force! Danielle: There is a version of "Everyone" with English subtitles throughout; I suggest that one. Also Danielle: "Lean on me" is also impressive. It keeps switching up, and going higher and higher.
I should check that out. The first and last time I listend to someone sing this was ailee and I remember being blown away. Like fr. I think I remember ailee sang on this show too.
@@PeyloBeauty Aliee was on immortal songs a few times. They also have a very unknown duet. "알리 X 소향 - 회로 - ALi & Sohyang / Only RU-vid" (Title doesn't help anyone find it)
Danielle, excellent reaction, as usual. This is a very old Korean Folk song. The audience was singing along at one point because it is very well known. I have heard that it is more recently revered as expressing hope for Korean reunification. That was a traditional gown she was wearing and some of the staging was reflective of Korean tradition. Sohyang is instrumental in the arrangement of all of her stage performances so her personality is always on display on the stage. Others can give a better explanation of the roots of this particular performance. Cheers.
See the short video titled "Sohyang Talks about her Mixed Voice + Demonstration - RU-vid", where she mentions taking a vocal lesson from former Michael Jackson coach Seth Riggs when she visited L.A.
It's actually History of Korea and the clamor for its glorious unification. The cradle of peace, the reality of hate and war, confusion, and the final dream of peace once again when two lovers meet again and walk in life together once again. Arirang. So Hyang is a national treasure.
Everytime I hear her belt out that top beautiful note, she reminds me of a volcano getting ready to burst- when she says "it will flow, flow, flow.." then belts out that note just like a volcano exploding and leaking down the mountain afterwards, its so beautiful
As incredible as her voice is the thing I love most about So Hyang is the way she makes me feel. She has the voice of a diva but her stage presence is so drenched in positive energy it's like she's inviting us all on stage to experience the performance with her. Can't wait for you to react to more from her, subscribed!
What blows me away is the dynamics between the different sections. As the strings fade a bit you get a more aggressive sound with the horns rounding it out. Her arrangement is absolutely incredible.
So Arirang is a traditional Korean folk song that’s been around for hundreds of years so it’s very well known. It’s considered the unofficial national anthem of South Korea actually. This version Arirang Alone is a take on the traditional song but it modernizes it and really speaks to the hope of reunification between north and South Korea enabling families who wore torn apart by the divide to see each and be United once again. It’s a very emotional and meaningful song. I think literally every Korean person knows the song in some shape or form.
Arirang Alone is a Korean folk song written in the hope and longing for the reunification of Korea. Sohyang's arrangement is a masterpiece and her vocals are mind blowing as always. You've got to check out her rendition of Everyone next. English subtitles are a must for this performance, so please use vimeo and not yt. Thank you for a great reaction.
YES!!!! You started my day off beautifully with this reaction to Sohyang's rendition (and arrangement!) of Arirang Alone! Thank you so, so much! Sohyang is one of the top female vocalists in the world and deserves widespread recognition for her talents, but especially her tender, loving Christian care for all people. She has said in interviews that she sings to bring comfort to those in pain, something she knows from personal experience. Next: Everyone. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-H5e7MPre7iY.html
SoHyang is one of the best vocalist out there. Especially her expertise in using her mixed voice. Probably one of the best mixed in the world right now.
I love when reactors discover singers like So Hyang as you know your comments will be full of at least 20 songs to react to next lol. Definitely "Lean On Me" has to be top of that list made even more special as it was performed with Michael Bolton in the audience. Get ready for a Gospel masterclass!
perfect song for a Korean Disney production and the perfect singer......the perfect singer trivializes her talent..... i love to hear her in her native language.....i also admire Sissle singing Norwegian
I love her rendition of this song! ❤️ Please react to her singing Everyone!! The impact she has during that performance is amazing. I've heard she said she could never perform it that way again, she was singing to everyone who's supported her and she was giving everything.
What a sensational performance. Especially last ending part, 11:11~ This is one of the most beautiful moment I've ever heard in my wholelife. It's just so pure, emotional and breathtaking. She always touches my heart and makes me cry but I'm so happy. I don't know what to say. I can only say Wow. Thank you so much for great reaction and analysis. Absolutely I agree with you. Sohyang and VIBE's new song "Lying" was just released February 8, 2022 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kWx3U1TlfeI.html You haven't listened to her recent work or duets/collaborations or more typical/minimal productions.
The push and pulling you mentioned is actually one of the Korean traditional vocal methods called "bending" (I think) because the song Arirang itself is a very old traditional song. I'm really happy you reacted to this performance of Sohyang and I'm so proud as a Korean hehe :) Also you should try reacting to Sohyang's Never Enough Cover!! It's also beautiful :D
So Hyang es como el viento cuando canta! se puede transformar de uno apacible a una ráfaga! Me encantan tus reacciones! espero ver mas reacciones sobre ella! saludos desde Chile! bendiciones!
Love your reactions to the Queen SoHyang! As you can see by her thousands of worldwide fans(comments) below! And yes, lots of fans want you to do her 7hr masterpiece: "EVERYONE" but a VERY VERY VERY MUST to get the english lyric translation video(Vimeo)!!!!!! Stay Safe!!! from Hawaii!😀😀
I felt like sohyang described the history of the Dokdo through her composition of the song. Arirang alone is about this island on the east of Korea. It started off very peaceful then moved on to Jpanese invasion of the land where they extincted a seal called Kangchi by hunting them. Then the ending of the song describes how Korea has bright and hopeful future.
Now that you’ve encountered so hyang. I highly recommend Song so hee for you to react soon. She’s actually one of so hyang’s competetor in this particular show. And if I’m not mistaken, she won during this round, beating this particular performance of so hyang. She’s an incredible and unique singer. I know you’ll gonna love her. Anyways, thank you for reacting to our Queen so hyang again. I’m hoping to see more omreaction of yours to her.

You can pronounce “A~Ri~Rang”. Arirang is the most famous Korean traditional folk song. There are many diverse versions of this song. The original version of Sohyang’s song is ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RD7Y3zTll_Q.html and its lyric depicts the hope to unification of two Korea, South and North Korea, split by Korean War in 1950. “Dok-do” at 4:15 is the Korea’s island.
*Arirang* (the original) is the most-beloved Korean folk song. It’s believed to be first sung over 600 years ago and passed down from generation to generation. No one knows the exact meaning of Arirang but it embodies the spirit of the people of Korea for centuries. Arirang represents the suffering and tribulation (Arirang 'Hill') overcome as people and the nation. If we’re together as one holding hands, we can make it over the hill. *Arirang Alone* is a modern adaptation (released in 1990) of the original Arirang, written in the hope of reunification of Koreas. It’s a song of hope and peace. It tells a dream of the Island of Dokdo floating in the East Sea all alone singing Arirang. If Dokdo sang Arirang, alone in the Eat Sea, would North and South reunite? Dokdo is islets centrally located between Mount Baekdu (on the northern border of North Korea) and Mount Halla (on southernmost Jeju Island, South Korea). Let’s ride a boat together from Baekdu and Halla. When we dock our boats at Dokdo, we’ll witness new dawn together. The songwriter’s parents had to leave two sons and a daughter in North Korea during the war. His father’s dying wish to him was “when Korea reunite, go find your older brothers and sister and tell them that we did not abandon them”
Hi coach, everyone says to listen to "everyone" but that's the last one you should listen to of her more popular views. Now that you've done Arirang alone, follow up with You Raise me up, Lean on Me, I Will Always Love you, Amazing Grace, Stay, and Misty in whichever order you feel. Last should be Everyone. You will go on a journey of her singing different genres, like Mori. Again, everything after that is just icing on the cake. Her Begin Again Series is much softer anf stripped bare in nature and her live concerts from end of 2021 and beginning 2022 shows how her voice has only gotten better with age. For more fun, you could also look at MAMAMOO'S and Big Mama's Killing voice since you like girl groups and harmonies. They are snippets of their greatest hits. You can then see what you want to follow up with. Park Hyo Shin is also a great artist. Start with Wildflower on Yu Hui Yeols sketchbook, where he is in a white suit. Super emotional. Happy listening! #subscriptionsquad
Yeah this song was popular even before she sing it, but she did it with different arrangements ( made by her ) and give it a new soul. I don’t think anyone can sing that cover the way she did. Thanks for this reacting and analyzing… please react to more of her.. My suggestion will be: Everyone 🔥🔥 Monalisa 🔥🔥 Dream 🔥🔥 Where are you 🔥🔥🔥 O holy night 🔥🔥
Great Reaction to this very traditional Piece of Korean Music. She did not win this round because a Lot of the Elders just did not enjoy it as much as The Gentleman (with the Green Traditional grab you saw Nodding Approval Him and his 3 sons are Very well Known, His Name Jo Tongdal and he is a Pansori singer. :) Won this Round....Your the best Danielle
Info on The Song This is a traditional folk song that most recently has been used to represent the dream of unification of the Koreas and this arrangement was composed by So Hyang and her husband to take advantage of her ridiculous range and breath control. You will discover her entire catalog is amazing, her background is Contemporary Christian Music/Gospel and she's stated many times that her primary mission is to comfort people rather than pursue traditional fame/recording deals etc. She has turned down More BIG record companies than most artist would ever get.
Sohyang lost to Jo Tongdal and his son and grandson. Only his son is a famous singer, not his grandson. Though I didn't agree, it makes sense why the audience gave votes to Jo Tongdal. Jo Tongdal was also beaten by Song So-hee, another famous traditional folk singer. It makes sense she sang last and the theme of the episode was folk songs. The voting audience is also equally divided into different age demographics from the 20s to 60s.
Great performance, great reaction!! Thank you. You absolutely need to dive into her many buskers style performances on the BEGIN AGAIN KOREA TV show, done during pandemic. All the artists are world class, so when there are individual, duet, or group songs, they are nothing short of perfectly amazing!
Arirang is an old Korean traditional song, it's almost their unofficial national anthem. It's really a sad song about leaving a loved one over crossing Arirang bridge. There are various versions to this song depending on the region. Sohyang made it relate to the tragic division of Korean people between the North and South reflecting divided loved ones. The lyrics expressed hope for reunification someday. Arirang is more pronounced as Ari-rhaaang with a long "a", not ari-yang as you said or ari-rang where "rang" is pronounced as in "the doorbell rang". Hope it helps.
#subscriptionsquad Her voice is absolutely amazing!!! I love all your videos, Danielle Marie!! Can't wait for more Encanto! Also random but at 3:04 is that here mama singing to the same song? adorable!
This song really shows you how she is truly a MASTER ARRANGER! That insane transition for no reason 😭 and then how dare she give us a round two of that before ending it with the beginning lullaby 😡🥲🥰
At the end of the video on the small screen, appeared two videos recommended, one Is about sohyang and the another one is about a korean singer named Kim Feel. The song Is " like being a shot" . He has a beautiful and unique voice. Please check the song. I know you will love his voice. 💖
Thanks for your great reaction!!! "Arirang Alone" is actually a modern song written in 1989, but in perhaps in 70s style(?), more retro style (in Korean 90s standard) song. It uses the theme of "Arirang," which is a famous Korean folk song with many regional versions. "Arirang Alone" used the most famous "Arirang" in the middle of the song where many people sang along in this performance. Of course, this version is arranged for Sohyang to perform in Immortal Songs folk song special episode. This song was originally written with a wish for the unification of Korea. Dokdo, is a small island in East Sea and the composer thought Dokdo is where the South and the North can meet. I believe the dissonant violin part right before "it becomes one" is arranged in there to describe two different Koreas can be one, which is not in the original song. One interesting part of this performance is Sohyang doesn't pronounce "East Sea" in the song. At first, I thought she forgot the lyrics, but she almost started the word, but mumbled. I heard many other versions that she sang in other programs. She doesn't almost start the word, but hums through that part. It seems that she almost forgot NOT to pronounce the word in this performance. I wonder if the tv stations do not allow her to sing out the word "East Sea" or she has some kind of contract with Japanese. Japanese call that part of sea "Sea of Japan" and Koreans call it, "East Sea." Most world maps write "Sea of Japan," but now many of them use both "East Sea" and "Sea of Japan." I don't understand why we cannot call something our own way. It's not like Koreans are claiming the sea belongs to Korea like Japanese falsely claim Dokdo as theirs when historical records show that Dokdo belongs to Korea. Funny thing is Jin of BTS wrote "Super Tuna" with his love for fishing. In the song, Jin mentions both "East Sea" and "West Sea," simply because both seas are on the East and West of Korea. But Japanese complained about the lyrics "East Sea" and tried to boycott BTS. However, because of what they did, it became an issue and now the whole world knows it as "East Sea." Many other singers have sang the part "East Sea." I haven't heard anyone singing this song recent years and not sure other singers don't sing "East Sea" as well nowadays.
