Arirang Alone is actually about the history of Korea and the longing for the North and South to be reunited, but originally the folk song it was based on was about a pair of lovers. Her 'wedding gown' is a hanbok, traditional Korean clothes.

A warm welcome to the amazing world of Sohyang. She is a ccm/gospel singer, cancer survivor and one of the best female vocalists currwnrly on the planet. She is an independent artist with no social media, who has turned down many offers from the big labels (including Sony last year) and says her goal is to use her voice in order to comfort people going through difficult times. Take the journey, as what you witnessed is just the tip of the iceberg. Thank you for a great reaction.

Just wanted to mention how good your editing is on this video. Your reaction was great and you definitely know your vocal techniques, but to maintain interest for over 15 minutes talking about technical stuff to a non-singer is a great skill. Really fun and engaging. Kudos.

So thrilled to watch you discover So Hyang. She is simply amazing! I keyed in on the incredible control and the pitch in my reaction (Arirang was my first) as well. She has pretty much the purest, clearest, most on-pitch tone of any singer I've heard. Mesmerizing is a perfect description of what she is. I just love your reactions. You are so knowledgeable about the human voice and your personality is hilarious. You're in for a thrilling ride with So Hyang. I highly recommend: Lean On Me, Everyone (this one will blow your mind and touch your heart), Bridge Over Troubled Water, Never Enough and I Have Nothing. As I'm sure others have said, aside from being the vocal queen, she is such a courageous, humble, faithful and giving person. She fought and overcame ovarian cancer which kept her from having children and has devoted her life to lifting people up through her gift. Wish you all the best with your channel. Keep up the great work!

We all wonder if So Hyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself (with the input of her musical assistants), teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks four languages. Korean, English, French and Vietnamese. Let me catch my breath. OK. She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all travelled to Asia to work with her. She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of “You Raise Me Up” before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-te_L9ofhUt8.html She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere! She just turned 43 on April 5, 2021, though in Korean culture she would be 44 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. She was about 37 when she sang this version of “Arirang Alone”, their unofficial national anthem based on a 600 year old folk song expressing their desire to reunify north and south: vimeo.com/308253527 After being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she chastised herself and entered a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international fame from the performances being posted on RU-vid. Whitney Houston’s former manager saw her on RU-vid and showed her to Oprah Winfrey, who brought her to David Foster’s attention. Foster then contacted So Hyang and went to Japan in order to perform eight concerts together at Tokyo’s famous Blue Note Club in late 2018. (For those who don't know, David Foster was Whitney Houston's producer for her albums, wrote "I Have Nothing", her most iconic song, and is probably the most famous and influential music producer in the world. He places So Hyang right beside Whitney and the rest of the top tier divas.) Here is the interview where So Hyang related the events: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EqeE_1nP-Kk.html (Be sure to turn on English subtitles.) Here is the version of “I Have Nothing” Oprah, David Foster and the rest watched on RU-vid: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-T4UyIMkdy4M.html She preceded it with this blockbuster: vimeo.com/312061203 She could be an international Super Star if she wanted to be but has decided that it would ruin her spiritually, quoting Proverbs 14:12 and 16:25 which both say “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.” In a South Korean television interview So Hyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and closing the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. So Hyang says she saw herself in that young woman and then understood that God was keeping her from developing self-destructive character by withholding international celebrity status from her. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rl-jX9kBsEs.html (Again, turn on English subtitles.) So as a consequence she does not pursue fame or fortune and actually has no social media presence whatsoever. What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her! And whether she wants it or not, fame has overtaken her! On Oct. 5, 2020, it was revealed that So Hyang turned down _yet another_ contract offer, this time from Sony Music. www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20200921000995 “Debuting in [the] US was my utmost goal for the past 20 years. But when I got a call from the US agency, I politely rejected, as I realized that what I wanted most was not becoming famous,” she said. “I think singers are very susceptible to arrogance, especially when they hear the screaming from crowds on stage. It can make you feel like as if you’ve become God.” “And I’m perfectly okay with sharing my music via RU-vid, which can reach tens of millions of people all over the world without making me feel stuck up. Maybe that’s why I was born in this era.” So Hyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being. She is beautiful both inside and out, and so humble, open and genuine, with a stage charisma, facial expressions and smile that is off the charts. In Korean dictionaries 소 향 (So Hyang) has several meanings. • First is a type of Korean traditional music. • Second is to burn incense on a burner. • Third is to go toward. But these meanings are rarely used today and hers is a quite uncommon name. 소 향 is also the name of a heroine in a Korean traditional novel. So in retrospect her name was well chosen, and you can take your pick! Please analyze her performance of “Bridge Over Troubled Water”: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-C6iHh4yBxCo.html Also, please react to her version of “The Power of Love”: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LrNkVRrK7_I.html Plus this beautiful duet with her friend Lee Hi where they do Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons’ “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You”: vimeo.com/439148918 And this version of her singing “Oh Holy Night”: vimeo.com/322716334 Here she performs “Lean On Me” before Michael Bolton, who called her a vocal “virtuoso” after her performance: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GvsgCllcNPE.html This is a wonderful Jazz inflected performance of “His Eye Is On The Sparrow”: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-H1vppvq_F-8.html Wait until you see her duet of David Foster's “The Prayer” with Jeong Ui Geu: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rte-q3kunp8.html This song of hers "Everyone" is dumbfounding: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-H5e7MPre7iY.html And finally “Will You Be There”: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nBdSpexUxik.html Here’s an English language interview with her that I’m sure you will enjoy: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-N2u_pmoWxj8.html Her English is perfect when she sings and almost perfect when she is doing interviews. OK, I’ll stop gushing now. Well, one more gush. In an interview with a Turkish music producer So Hyang's assistants revealed (a bit to her chagrin, as she is a self-effacing person) that she can hit Eb7 and D7 in practise. However, she never goes above the 6th octave in performances. Since she starts at D3 that is more than a 4 octave range ... so how about them apples???! Here it is: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VnPAkryrygQ.html I know, bananas isn’t it? Oh, I just remembered, she is also a published novelist and theological treatist, and a very good stage actress, which she proved by playing Julie Andrews’ part in the South Korean production of “The Sound of Music.” Moreover, she sang the “Moana” part in the Korean version of the Disney film, does the musical vocals for many South Korean television dramas, and is a talented artist and cartoonist. She can also play the piano and guitar. Is there anything this genius level woman can’t do? Though she is less than 5' 4" and probably not even 100 pounds, So Hyang simply transcends the thresholds of music and takes you there with her. She becomes the song when she sings it. An experience like no other. I don’t know what else to say. I’ve spent _entire days_ listening to her, and shed more than a few tears of joy along the way. She is indeed akin to an addictive substance you can't live without. I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people So Hyang works with. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear, and it is important to note that as these are _essential_ parts of any great music production. The Korean people are easily as talented as anyone else. As you can see, I am a shameless fan. 😉

At last!! I love this performance of Arirang but it was so easy for her. Could you please react to her performance of ‘bridge over troubled water’ again from the immortal songs show. This is a song I’m sure you are already familiar with so it may start to show you that not only is she a fantastic vocalist but also a very talented arranger (sohyang is responsible for the arrangement of all the songs she performs). She would have loved your response when she first opened her mouth, about the Princess etc because she is also a published author of fiction. People often liken her voice to a Disney Princess, especially with this song, but she is actually the voice of Disney’s Moana in the official dubbed Korean version of the film & Sohyang has said on many occasions that watching Disney films is how she first learned to speak English. You should read her back story which will help explain why this lady is not the household name all over the world that her amazing voice surely deserves. Her impeccable technique allows her to sing any genre & sing it well & she can even be seen rapping in a song called ‘day day’, not her heart is in gospel music & elements of this can be found in many of her performances, even one’s that are not normally associated with that genre. She is such a wonderful woman & she is as beautiful on the inside as her voice is on the outside. It would be great to hear more Sohyang on your channel, there can never be too much Sohyang in our lives

This old Korean folk song has come to represent the hope for re-unification of the families torn apart when Korea split into North and South. Also, there is a video on Y.Tube called "So Hyang Talks about her Mixed Voice + Demonstration" where she talks about taking vocal lessons from Seth Riggs, who worked with Michael Jackson.

I've seen quite a few vocal coaches make these kinds of videos. You are one of the best I've seen, I'd say. *Very* technical, and yet sufficiently dumbed down so that people with no musical knowledge can understand what you mean. The fact that you demonstrated what you meant by vocalising a 'thick/chest', 'thin/head', and 'mixed' voice was so nice, from a student's perspective. Most vocal coaches would just mention the terms.

This is a traditional folk song that most recently has been used to represent the dream of unification of the Korea's and this arrangement was composed by So Hyang and her husband to take advantage of her ridiculous range and breath control. You will discover her entire catalog is amazing, her background is Contemporary Christian Music/Gospel and she's stated many times that her primary mission is to comfort people rather than pursue traditional fame/recording deals etc. She has several other songs from the same series available to review and they are all pretty big production numbers like this one but most recently was a part of the series Begin Again Korea which had a group of musicians and singers busking across Korea during the pandemic. Amazing acoustic versions of I Will Always Love You, If I Ain't Got You, Misty and I Won't Give Up and even a rap song called Day Day are all worth a reaction. Subscribed!

Excellent video! You are hilarious, have great personality, and knowledgeable. You will do well and be successful here. You've just witnessed the tip of Sohyang's skill iceberg. Trust me, it's a humongous iceberg. As other vocal coach who had dissected a number of Sohyang's performances put it, Sohyang isn't just "korean great", she's "planetary great". I wouldn't go as far as saying "galactic great", but that's only because we have no extraterrestrial sample lol. However, I, and many others, have no reservation in saying that Sohyang belongs with other "historical Greats". Feel free to continue reacting/analyzing Sohyang performances, to dip below the ocean surface and witness the entirety of monstrous skill iceberg, juxtaposed at the same time by a very warm Sohyang.

Great Reaction. You should definitely check out her Cover of Bridge over Troubled Water ( very emotional Song ) and her Version of Lean on Me ( has a lot of Gospel influence, that will take you on a great Jurney )

Glad you made your way to see Sohyang. You have a unique way of presenting your analysis in this entertaining yet informative manner on vocal control. You remind me of the animation guide of the park guide in the movie Jurassic Park. It can be delightfully charming while explaining some obscure science in a east-to-understand way like how to stand up or sit down. Sohyang is indeed a phenomenal singer and this performance of Arirang Alone is only the tip of the iceberg. If you were to visit her again, perhaps you would consider her iconic stage of singing "Bridge Over Troubled Water" @ ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-C6iHh4yBxCo.html

After the intro and before a sung word she hums, and that is so pretty. Proves she is an 'EARTH ANGEL"!! Stopping the video and restarting swallowed the humming, so pretty!!

Mother, I watched you do this 2 years ago - fun, fascinating, but respectful. She IS the Queen. You have never done another Sohyang video. We, her spellbound fans, can't get enough of her. You should see what she has done since this performance. What happened? Did Copyrights wear you out? You know how to get around them. Is there nothing more for you to say about her mind-boggling skills. You had fun with this video. Please do more Sohyang. Please. Cheers.

I've gone down the The Fairy Voice Mother wormhole and thoroughly enjoyed it! I have to get up in 3 hours to lay bricks.. might just stay up. Absolutely loving riding the wave of each video with you.. particularly the Dimash videos! And it's great to see a "vocal coach" that actually lives up to the title. You explain everything really well and you have some very cool vocal chops happening as well! Fanks very much :)

Another excellent reaction video! I find it curious that the channels providing the best reaction videos [in my opinion] are by people who are self described vocal nerds. FVM you stand out, even amongst your peer group for you insight analysis and humor. I will watch

Everything you post as the knowledge you share enhances my enjoyment and appreciation for the singer and the performance. Please ignore those who would have you providing less analysis because what is the point of watching a reaction video, if not for the reaction. I would be curious to your reaction of Post Modern Jukebox’s Creep ft. Haley Reinhart. Haley uses a lot of vocal effects and I would like to see your reaction to those. God bless!

Wonderful breakdown! So Hyang must be at the top of the list of the best vocalists in the world. Her performances on RU-vid are absolutely unmatched. If you can get past the copyright issues you might react to 'Bridge Over Troubled Waters' (KBS TV), I Have Nothing' (with her wearing a blue dress), 'Lean On Me', 'Misty' (from the Begin Again concerts), or her masterclass for any singer, ever, 'Everyone'. There are many more but some of these are just from a galaxy far far away.

Thanks for your reaction on this human jewel. Spellbound and mesmerising were very well put there. Except for her vocal abilites/qualities she is also master at arranging songs respecting the original feeling and adding her religeous touch. Her real mastery I think, is delivering emotions. I suggest "Bridge Over Troubled Water" if you want to see what she can do on western masterpieces, "You Raise Me Up" or "Lean On Me" if you prefer those. The violinist on stage is named Sue Son and was a BGT2009 semiFinalist.

Hi. I've discovered you today and let me start by saying I watch many RU-vidrs and reactions to different singers, and I never comment, but I have to tell you, please keep being this "nerd" on all your reactions, because, as a person who "can't sing", even if I can talk, you make me understand a lot of things, and trust me, I watched reactions of those with millions of views and don't explain it, anatomically, so fine! Keep it up! :) and thank you!

You have reacted to some extraordinary singers of late. I'm inviting you back in time to have some fun, to my home town in 1989, when John Farnham and his band performed a great arrangement of The Beatles' "Help" with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra - at the tennis centre. The crowd adored him so much that they ruined some dramatic moments. He coped. He was used to it. His final concerts went on for years, but I think now that he is 71, he really is retired.
