I love when one a director picks up a movie and you are instantly like "Oh yeah, I figured they would love that."

A Kaiju film from the Daniels would be absolutely stunning!

The Before trilogy is great because it follows the arc of human romanticism from romantic fantasy to real relationship. The fight scene is amazing!

It feels so validating to see some of my favorite directors going through the Criterion collection and picking some of the more mainstream stuff I’d pick rather than the obscure stuff I’ve never heard of all my other favorite directors go for

In their video for Turn Down For What (at around 2 minutes in), there's a fake paper towel product simply named "Towel". Now I understand that it's actually a Repo Man reference because of their production designer. That's just all kinds of awesome.

Nice to hear Love & Mercy get a mention. I swear in years to come in will be reappraised as one of the best films of recent times. it's a slept on masterpiece. and in this new era of big budget music biopics it is hands down the best of them, by far!

Linklater's Before Sunrise is one of my inspirations as it was the first film that made it abundantly clear that all you need is good writing and a couple of actors to make a compelling film. Everything else are just bells and whistles.

They picked such good choices, but I also love how compassionate and humorous they are about the films they talk about, and the people those films remind them of. Love these two so much

Funny that Dan mentioned his uncle who's on the spectrum. I was diagnosed just recently in my late-30s... but being able to recite all the dialogue from movies like _Goodfellas_ from start to finish, and scare people with encyclopedic knowledge of movie facts, should've probably been a tip-off lol! Good on Daniel for picking _Malcolm X,_ btw! 😁 Among the all-time greatest films... so glad it's in the collection. Finally - anyone who likes _Tampopo_ and hasn't seen _The Funeral_ should absolutely do so... imo, it's Juzo Itami's best film, yet _Tampopo_ always seems to get all the props. Glad they're both in the collection! It's horrific what happened to Itami... shows the power of cinema, and how threatening it can be to those in power! He and his wife were one of the best director-actor duos ever.

Its so great hearing these anecdotes on how they found these pics. You get a little glimpse into their backgrounds. That goes for most other criterion entrants aswell.

Glad to see Tampopo as one of the picks. It's my favourite film about food and the first Criterion I ever got.

I love love LOVE their film choices but my only bone I have to pick would be referring to Malcolm X as a crime movie....calling it that is a bit of a head scratcher. 🤔

Found Tampopo on RU-vid straight after watching this. Great recommendation! Fascinating film. Easy to spot the DNA in the Daniels' work too. These two come across every bit as likeable as they are talented.

Too bad Criterion couldn't include Police Story 3: Super Cop in that Police Story box set especially since Michelle Yeoh co starred in it. Fun Fact :Criterion did release Super Cop back when they still released laser discs.

SO refreshing to see filmmakers who are top of their game picking films that aren't pretentious art house old stuff. Don't get me wrong, those films are great. Though it often feels like the Filmmaker in the closet is just picking stuff to look cool. Love The Daniels.

Dude, happy you chose Godzilla, but should’ve grabbed the series set! And also happy to see Mal X & Repo Man. A local theatre just did a revival screening of it and we had a great crowd for it. They also followed it up with the 1980 Pee-Wee’s Playhouse ep.

In Repo Man, the reason why products were just labeled with plain black and white type like BEER or DOG FOOD was because in in the late 70s early 80s they would sell it that way in real life. The thought behind it was that flashy packaging added too much to the cost. They called these non-brand products GENERIC and devoted a whole aisle to them in grocery stores.. The whole idea was pretty dumb and people mostly bought them ironically.

In a sea of art films they find Kaiju and Kung Fu. They are my kind of filmmakers.

Based Before Midnight enjoyed. My favorite of the trilogy as well. Also grew up renting all the old Godzilla movies from the public library and watching them with my cousin.

Oh wow, Repo Man was a pleasant surprise. That's one of my favorites too, so shout out to their friend.

Awkwafina's comedy series NORA FROM QUEENS was absolutely hilarious, and The Daniels stepped in to direct one of the very best episodes, called 'Grandma and Chill' from season one.

On the channel can you do like a 360 of the closet so we can look threw the movies and feel like we're in the room and browsing 😆

calling Malcolm X a crime film is a bit interesting, probably need to rewatch to know for sure but I don't agree with that. Picking the Before Trilogy is dope asf tho, always have this huge smile watching the first two films.

I remember watching Police Story on vhs but it was the American version and it was called Police Force. That’s the version I grew up on. I can’t find it anymore tho. 😢
