Rian Johnson strolling in very dignified while Daniels spin and run and tumble into the auditorium at the beginning is so perfect to me. Encapsulates their respective filmmaking and storytelling sensibilities. What a privilege it was to listen to this.

There's a greater spotlight on the other side of the camera in general in the public mind now. I mean we live in an age where a cinematographer (Deakins; you could arguably cite Chivo too at this point) is a figure of notoreity and admiration among everyday filmgoers. Such a thing was inconceivable 20 years ago. It's a tremendous thing. Maybe it "reveals the trick" to some extent now, but I'm glad that there's so much public interest in the craft and the figures behind it.

Next step is to get just as much attention on concept artists, costume designers, set builders, prop masters, VFX artists, etc. Imagine if we had been able to get a conversation like this between John Howe & Alan Lee of LOTR, and Ralph McQuarrie of Star Wars, BSG, Raiders, etc.

I keep wanting someone to bring up what the Daniel’s did for Manchester Orchestra. They directed the music video for “Simple Math” which at the time was unlike any video I’d ever seen. And they already had developed the same style they use today.

I think he means that the mid-point of the film is when you start to understand the core message of the story.

I see it as everything up to the mid-point is setting up your characters, locations, disparate ideas, and then the mid-point in any film almost always involves a major shift to the film's status quo. It's where character dynamics and motivations irrevocably change, where secrets are revealed, where the twist comes. It generally means the film stops introducing new things to you and instead starts paying off all the things the director has set up.

Everything Everwhere starts as a terrific family drama, gets interrupted by a silly, slap-stick action movie, and then tries to recover with heavy-handed proclamations of life and meaning or whatever but fails because the movie stopped having real moments between characters. Just my opinion.
