This is the premier of the concerto. Kabalevski gave score just 6 days before the premier and he was discussing with shafran until the last second in order to make the tempos slower as Shafran wanted them faster. Seems like finally Shafran imposed his criteria.

In January 1980 I was in Russia at Dmitri Kabalevsky's 75 Anniversary Celebration tour in which Shafran and my father Ozan Marsh were on tour under the invitation of the composer. Shafran played Kabalevsky Concerto 2 and my father Ozan Marsh played his 2nd Piano Concerto with the Russian State Orchestra, St Peterburg, Moscow.. I remember Shafran, one of the finest Cellists I have ever heard in concert with this piece under the baton of Dmitri Kabalevsky. I stood at the door of Shafran's studio (greenroom-back of Shostakovitch Hall-St. Petersburg) to give him a message about dinner at the hotel Europa one evening, and I was taken by a personality that lived through that cello...First time I ever heard 2nd Cello Concerto of Kabalevsky....The performances of the Kabalevsky celebration were recorded live for Russian Television...I was a recordist from America and have a live recording of the performances...

Just looked up your dad - wow, what a pianist! I will listen to as much of him as I can. Shafran is one of the greats and this is his greatest performance - I played for him in some masterclasses a very long time ago - a lovely man totally dedicated to the cello.

Conducted by the composer Kabalevsky, one of the most underrated composers of the 20th century. Shafran practiced for only 6 days and he could remember the entire score and played as he had practiced for 20 years. Just crazy...

Unbelievable. Hidden gem of the cello literature and the one of the greatest cellists ever playing it. Perfect combo of piece and performer

how the hell is his vibrato so consistent it literally sounds the same on his fourth finger as on his second and even his thumb

Brandon J I know! It’s crazy how he sounds this amazing with concepts completely different from the cello technique in nowadays

It’s sooo easy! -because each finger actually has five invisible hyper-advanced-alien musically-mutational states.

It's amazing that he can play this complicated piece by heart in 6 days. However, I was trained at Moscow Conservatory and it was not unusual that you get kicked out of class if you cannot memorize any piece given a few days ago. In one occasion I had to memorize Schumann Five Pieces in Folk Style in less than 24 hours before the concert at which my professor assigned me and forgot.

Thank you for sharing this! Do you have the video recording of Natalia Gutman's Prokofiev sinfonia concertante? It's a live recording from the 80's at the great hall of the Moscow Conservatory. It would wonderful if you could share it! Thank you so much! I love your content!

Having gone to the trouble of uploading this, it really would be great if we were told where this took place (presumably Moscow), who the conductor was and the orchestra.

He get lost some bars during the concert. And yes he did. Honestly I don't think is something that special... I mean what is special is the amazing way he plays it. Kavalevsky himself explains that in his memoirs.

@@Shafrancollector I agree that the way he plays it is special, but my gosh learning and memorizing a piece like this in 5 days!? Considering some of the ridiculous technical passages in the piece, that is an unbelivable feat.
