‪@daniiltrifonov‬ is intrigued by Bach’s attempts to base the work on the Fibonacci sequence and the golden ratio, but observes that the result is “far more than a scientific experiment: as always with Bach, he managed to make music of indescribable beauty and emotion”. Trifonov’s imaginative interpretation captures the sense of the work as a cycle, treating it as a living, organic whole. This chimes with the inspiration he takes from spending time in nature, whether hiking or practising Qigong, a form of meditation that values the healing energy of trees. “And the tree is a good metaphor for The Art of Fugue’s overall structure,” he notes. “The theme is the trunk, the fugues are the branches, all the permutations within each fugue are the leaves…”
Bach did not live to finish The Art of Fugue’s final contrapunctus, and a number of musicians have attempted conjectural completions. For this recording, Trifonov, himself an accomplished composer, has created a seamless, stylistically respectful conclusion worthy of Bach’s genius. It reflects the extent to which he has absorbed and internalised every nook and cranny of Bach’s valedictory masterpiece.

Trifonov is doing the right thing! According to J.S.Bach himself, his music is not scholarly - but for the heart. This sounds organic, self grown - freshly sprung from Bachs imagination.

I'm perfectly agree. Very often the contrapuntal technique is pulsating life, in Bach. I see a very strong metaphor in it, which perhaps is the one captured by this pianist. Each person comes into the world necessarily conditioned by the inheritance of the past of the person who brought him into the world and the context in which he finds himself. There are patterns that are at the same time the conditions of our existence and what binds us into a feeling of anguish. The variation, the counterpoint are metaphors of the soul that with difficulty, through its bonds, tries to build a self beyond itself to reach authenticity. A man like Bach, a son of his time, interprets in the search for God this realization of a soul that is necessarily born separated from its creator and that struggles against his limits (sin, for example) to rejoin him. In today's vision of this pianist, perhaps there is no longer a God who ensures a safe haven for the authenticity of human existence, but the sensation that each of us experiences at least once, in feeling evanescent, inauthentic if he does not test himself to go beyond what is taken for granted, beyond the "given song" remains. And I think this author's reinterpretation of Bach's work is enchanting.

This video is excellent, and the ending, which was composed by Trifonov himself is very well executed. I'm a profesional pianist myself and one thing that always rubs me the wrong way, is the rigidity of the classical music culture. The video is a very creative and personal way of expressing Bach's music, and I like that it has a certain gloom to it that is uncommon when referring to Bach's music, but tells us that not everybody feel's music the same way. Many classical music enthusiasts will get offended when they see their precious Bach being "profanated" by a video like this, which only serves to gatekeep new and original attempts at expressing old music in a new way which is very much needed in this day and age for this new generation.

This piece is new to me AND it is J.S. Bach. Since I first heard a performance of his “Jesu, joy of man’s desiring” when about twelve years old I was immediately transported into a realm of celestial, gracious beauty the likes I had never experienced. It is an indelible, precious memory that has since grown into an inspirational spark of lyricism when some years ago I composed a verse to that great chorale and sang it at a wedding anniversary celebration. I am moved by every piece I have heard by this great musical genius. PWG

Of the many, many attempts to complete this sublime fugue, this is the only one of those I've heard that makes sense to me emotionally and structurally. It seems to flow seamlessly out of what has gone before, tying it all up in a completely satisfying conclusion, and with utter humility and reverence for the monumental edifice that Bach has constructed.

I was moved at the practice struggle with the entire Art of the Fugue, the work that Bach, blind and mind humming, is said to have dictated to his son. The wonderful TRIFONOV with his beautiful Fazioli Pianoforte 20th century instrument in a room next to the fire in the hearth, the wall filled with the score to the fugues like a detective examining the record of the event that led to Bach’s final gift to us all. The performer struggles to get into Bach’s mind and find the “Affect” for every note. It leads him to dreams and not to a machine, like the modern Pianoforte but into the organic world of all life and yes to the tree as well, but most of all the resolution to the question Bach posed for us all. Bravo to the artists involved in bringing this heritage of western civilization into the present when it was not so long ago mankind’s political ego and warlike nature bombing the libraries, architecture and paintings that was the legacy of the past to the world. I’m thankful for the shards that are left as we still contemplate war for fun and personal profit. Ray Evans Harrell,

Bach left this final fugue from The Art of Fugue (BWV 1080) unfinished at his death. Bach’s notation ends at measure 238, after which Trifonov’s completion of the work begins. Beginning in m. 235, Bach spells out his name as a countersubject. German notation includes the letter H in its musical alphabet, making it possible for Bach to ‘write’ his name in the music, which he did in a number of works. Thus: B = _B-flat_ A = _A_ C = _C_ H = _B natural_ One tradition holds that Bach died just after signing his name in music notation. When this last fugue is performed in concert, the artist/s will often let the work taper off as written. It is a very touching moment. Some additionally suggest Bach spelled out his name in the music as a final ‘Musical Offering’ to God before dying. Another tradition maintains that his final work was actually the organ chorale “Vor deinen Thron tret’ ich hiermit” *(Before your throne I now appear) (BWV 668).* The story goes that Bach, after enduring a second operation on his failing eyes, *(possibly diabetes-induced blindness),* was unable to continue work on The Art of Fugue and instead dictated this beautiful organ work from his deathbed. The organ piece was included in the 1st printed edition of The Art of Fugue in 1751. Bach’s music ends, and Trifonov ‘s begins at 8:38 😎🎹

I don't believe Bach is known to have worked on the Art of Fugue after 1748, which leaves many to speculate that he actually *deliberately* left the culmination of his musical life "unfinished" as a challenge to others. Considering that Bach always had in mind the budding young contrapuntalist, and was a fan of musical riddles (see the Musical Offering and the 14 Canons on the Goldberg Bass), I've found this view increasingly compelling. He of course dedicated the Inventions, Sinfonias and Well-Tempered Clavier to the student of keyboard and counterpoint ("for the profit and use of musical youth desirous of learning, and especially for the pastime of those already skilled in this study", WTC I), and it would not be surprising if he did in fact leave this great triple fugue (intended to be a quadruple fugue, with the return of the Contrapunctus I-VII theme) without an ending so as to beckon the student, now having been taken on a tour of fugal techniques of the simplest and most complex varieties, to write their own.
@quidestveritas
@quidestveritas 2 года назад
The most probable story in my opinion is that Bach originally had in mind to write two quadruple fugues to crown the work, but when his sight continued to decline and perhaps when other commitments came up, he instead resolved to leave only the first quadruple fugue in partial form as a puzzle for others to solve to put their skills to the test.
@jaikee9477

@@quidestveritas Bach researchers came up with lots of adventurous theories as to why he didn't finish the piece. I believe that the simplest explanation is still the best and most convincing explanation. The best evidence we have is what his son wrote down on the final page. After all CPE Bach was a rather principled man. Mozart considered CPE as a role model and father figure. Mozart greatly adored him as a character, so who are we not to trust his words?

Deutsche Grammophon is the best classical music label, Trifonov is the most outstanding pianist of our time. I appreciate his capacity to adapt and put himself in new artistic/ "cinematographic" situations, it is an added proof that he is special and unique. Except for that, no one notices that it is a musical video without any add, for the reason that it IS an add: Deutsche Grammophon is auto promoting its new product (Trifonov's cd) and more simply they chose to not cut the music and spread a two minutes video, that would have sponsored the CD but also killed the music. We shouldn't take for granted such things like sitting on the sofa and listening to one of the best musicians of our time playing a masterpiece three hundred years old, for free. 8:41 is Trifonov's part. The playing is very good I, really think, but I disagree that it's "a seamless, stylistically respectful conclusion worthy of Bach’s genius", it's simply a small addition to just conclude the work, with "not stylistically respectful" octaves on the left hand, for example. If it were to really develop what Bach has set out with his materials, I would imagine that he would still go a long way, a long path of combinatory development, since Bach never shies away from profound and exaustive "florescence" of all the seeds he plants in a way that still amazes us. I appreciate the tree metaphor, but promotional talk should not get too excited, sometimes. Pianists like Trifonov are great players/musicians, but the distance to musicians of the past that could not only play, but compose and improvise is huge. This to show that some current adulation sould be put in context and moderated.
@pedterson
@pedterson 2 года назад
I agree that it isn't a seamless or stylistically consistent conclusion. I don't even think that was Trifonov's intention here. You hear an immediate stylistic and athmospheric shift when his part begins, as if he wanted to make explicit that everything thereafter is but an echo of Bach's piece in the same way that much of music history is an echo of Bach's genius. Personally, I find that more respectful than attempting to imitate Bach.

I have the utmost respect for Trifonov in opting to dedicate so much time and effort to The Art of Fugue. His interpretations often stand with Sokolov's, Gould's, and Zhu xiao Mei's. I particularly love how he sheds new light on the contrapuncti 8 and 11 with his carefully placed rubati and demonic drive. However, I find the existence of this video utterly flabergasting: if someone didn't already appreciate (or wasn't already capable of appreciating) THE ART OF FUGUE, would this jumpy dream sequence in which the director chose to cut every 2 seconds help them in doing so? Conversely, if someone already did appreciate the music, does this add anything at all to the experience? Why is the accompanying video to one of the most profound pieces ever written as _about_ the process of the performer's learning it as possible? Can you for a moment see Richter, Gould, Zhu Xiao Mei, Sokolov etc or many other great artists agreeing to such a video and putting _themselves_ center stage in one of their performances? Would not a simple video of the performance have sufficed? Like I say, I have the utmost respect for Trifonov but simply cannot understand what this video is supposed to add, or why it exists.

some of classical music supporters don't agree this musicvideo-like stuff. It is reasonable that they think those scenes are distracting our consciousness from music. However, DG is providing pure music and we have opportunity to choose. Also this movie might be unnecessary for music but in the point of this movie the Bach music is essential. So the point is, we should see this video as a short firm that inspired by Bach. Not a representation of Bach music itself. It is honorable and understanable that people of other areas inspired by great pieces. As we are moved by those pieces. In the realm that not harming (modifying etc.) music, we should welcome the products that including classical music. It is good for both.
