Danish Army engages Invading Germans 

April 9th is a great and highly underrated movie. It’s about a unit of Danish Bicycle Infantry that did their best to defend their region in Denmark against overwhelming odds when the Germans invaded Denmark. If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend it.

This was such a great movie. So accurate. 99% of shots miss, like in real life. Theres not 95% casualties. Most people hit are wounded not killed, everyone is scared and doesn't know what the fuck is going on, including the officers. Masterful. Probably one of the best battle scenes in film history.

Denmark's strategic importance for Germany was limited. The invasion's primary purpose was to use Denmark as a staging ground for operations against Norway and to secure supply lines to the forces about to be deployed there. An extensive network of radar systems was built in Denmark to detect British bombers bound for Germany. The attack on Denmark was a breach of the non-aggression pact Denmark had signed with Germany less than a year earlier. The initial plan was to push Denmark to accept that German land, naval, and air forces could use Danish bases, but Adolf Hitler subsequently demanded that both Norway and Denmark be invaded. Denmark's military forces were inferior in numbers and equipment, and after a short battle were forced to surrender. After less than two hours of struggle, Danish Prime Minister Thorvald Stauning ended the opposition to the German attack, for fear that the Germans would bomb Copenhagen (København), as they had done with Warsaw during the invasion of Poland in September 1939. Due to communication difficulties, some Danish forces continued to fight, but after a further two hours, all opposition had stopped. Lasting approximately six hours, the German ground campaign against Denmark was one of the shortest military operations of the Second World War.

April 9th is such a great movie. I think along with ‘The King’s Choice’ and other Scandinavian war movies you get a flavour of what it was like back in the spring of 1940.

About this scene what I love is how you can see the captain (or whatever rank he is) debating himself on for how long should he hold before the retreat. You can almost feel the weight of the responsibility that he has over the life of his soldiers

For those wondering, why don't the Danish army have any Anti-Tank guns, the military barely had a couple hours to mobilise a response to the German Invasion and thus were ill-prepared. That and they just didn't have very many and were unwieldy for bicycle infantry.

6 hours, 6 hours of brutal fighting bravery and horror as these terrified soldiers tried to fight off the Nazi bastard but without success, for the six hours they were at war they made each minute feel painful made every bullet count it may have been a short war but it’s still war

This is 1940, why are there MG 42's? Good movie otherwise.

The German army encountered very weak resistance between 1939-40.Poland, Norway, Denmark, France,Greece, Yugoslavia and British armies did not show any success against the German army.The real war for the German army began with the attack on the Soviet Union in June 1941. Compared to the western armies, the Red Army brutally fought tooth and nail to the last man.
