We don't know whether he was "heavily wounded" in the battle of Assandun - likely not, because within a few days of that he met with Cnut on the other side of the country (near Deerhurst on an island in the Severn - so it goes) to sign a treaty. He died 5-6 weeks after. There is no contempory mention within accounts of this and his death, that anyone suspected any foul play. As you point out, they had logical reason to suspect poison, but the fact that no one did, makes it very unlikely. Most historians have concluded he either died of infection from wounds, or from another illness. At any rate, it's a shame because he was by all accounts an exceptional, and chivalrous, human being, a good fighter and leader, and would have made a great king.
Just a stoner who had a random thought. Thank you for indulging and entertaining me for 4:39. I will share with my stoner friends who need to know this amazing piece of history. Wish the best to all and that 2022 be better than 2021. :)
So... The Anglo Saxons, who descended from Danes, was invaded by Danes, then overthrown by Danes, whereafter they were annexed by Danes following a series of Danish raids?
Mr Moist It also consists of Jutland... Nevertheless, Anglia was a cultural blend of both "Germans" and "Danes". I'm sorry I wasn't too specific. I just wanted to be a little superficial to point out the humor in this ;-) But I do admire that you even knew about Anglia - shout out to... Mr Moist hahaha
Please make video about Morocco for example Battle of Alcacer Quibir 1578 (Morocco vs Portugal) or video about Emirates of Sicily who attack Italy, its rise and fall
who picked the kings names like "the unready" or "the confessor"? was it just the people and the kings just dealt with them or did the kings pick their names?
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are named after Germanic deities, and were given those names by the Anglo-Saxons who settled in Britain from Germany, Holland, Denmark and northern Belgium.
Wow... an empire of the north by the viking kings, amazing. Makes you think about why the english have nostalgia por pre william the conqueror era to badmouth him when the viking kings weren't pure native english as well.
My last name is an Anglo-Saxon name but was written differently through time. English names are still very “cool”, but they aren’t translated into modern English, so it may seem like they’re boring as the names themselves are from centuries ago when we spoke differently. For example the name walsingham, which is an anglicized version of the Nordic family name Völsungr (or Wæls as written in the heroic poem of Beowulf). Also, the “ham” comes from old English as well meaning village.
And mind you that was just covering the Anglo-Saxon side, because there are still very cool Nordic names out there. In my opinion the more ancient looking names are in Iceland, whereas now in Scandinavia surnames have changed and first names are more continental.
Danes are Flat-land people, the fatherland of Germanic people in General is Nordic. The Highest Rhine (Swabia aka Switzerland) was the result of Germans replacing the Celto-Roman population there, that was the latest stage of Germanic settlement that produced the "High German" language and culture. Swabian-Habsburg-Austria and the German pockets in Northern Italy. High Germans were culturally influenced by Rome, but depended heavily on Germanic tribes, they took local women and they become the Holy Roman Empire. High Germanic influence is the dominant culture in modern Germany, especially in Bayern. The Swiss peasants eventually rebelled against the Swabian nobility and became the small modern -resource less- Switzerland. Normans pushed into the richer lands Britain, Sicily, Italy and avoided the then Swabian controlled Switzerland. They fought each other in Italy, had the Normans won they would have conquered Swabian Germans from that direction
Most historians agree that Aelfthryth did NOT have Edward the Martyr killed. That was later medieval propaganda. I'm surprised you got that wrong. (Look it up: Stenton, Norton, etc.)
Despite the repeated Danish invasions (Angles, Saxons, Jutes, Vikings and Normans). The Y-DNA Brits shows they were culturally-linguistically subjugated by this Danish minority. Genetically the majority of Brits are still Celto-Roman
@@bartnelson4783 40% Germanic 60% Celtic if I am correct I think geneticists carelessly label 20% out of 40% of that DNA as Anglo-Saxon even though it's Danish because it's Germanic so is similar anyway. Roman? Lies barely a Brit looks Italic.
I doubt you had felt that way had you been alive at the time. I think Tyrant would have closer to reality. Of course that goes for pretty much any medieval ruler.
Philippine american war please it was after the Spanish american war Spain sold the Philippines to the USA for 20 million dollars and started the war by shooting Filipino patrols who have no idea how to speak or understand English plus they were Allies during the Spanish american war but back stabbed and betrayed the Philippines revolutionary republic
Hi kababayan. Politics at that time were focused at expansion and finding resource-rich land and Spanish colonies were perfect for the taking. Spain was weak, not so stable and was on the losing side. If anything, I would blame Spain for offering PH in a treaty. Rizal fought and wanted PH to be a autonomous Spanish province because he knew there would be a revolution. Spanish officials in Spain agreed on this idea but the colonial rulers in PH wouldn't allow it, leading to the revolution. America saw this as an opportunity to grab PH since it's already an established colony in Asia (defined borders, close to China, cheap produce, rich in resources).
