3:15 A small sidenote here. Notice how Western Europe looked mostly the same in the 19th century as it does today. Central Europe (that is, Germany and Italy in this case) existed of many small states which united. And Eastern Europe existed of huge empires which would all be shattered into small pieces in the 20th century.
+tomakady That would be the only north-eastern European empire. If you look at the entire east of Europe, you see 3 empires: Russia, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire. About which his statement is correct.
Hey man, just wanted to say that your videos are awesome. They provide a great overview of historical events and encourage people to dig deeper. Keep up the good work.
And up to this day some Austrians tend to get mad, when you hint at the fact, that they are part of the German people, as their last emperor even said himself, because they are salty over the lost fraternal war. :-p
+Disko H That analogy is showing either a complete disregard for English-American history or for the German-Austrian one. As +MutantKitten already hinted at... If Austria would've won the fraternal war against Prussia they most likely would've been the leading force of a united "greater Germany", as this was the other idea of a unified Germany around next to the "lesser Germany" one which won out with the Prussians defeating Austria in said war. Another one of the disputes that played a role there was Protestant Christian Northern Germany against Catholic Christian Southern Germany. Anyways... My comment was just poking fun from a "Piefke"/"Saupreuße" ("sow Prussian"), which is how Austrians refer to Germans due to the fraternal war when they poke fun at us, towards the Austrian Schluchtenscheißer ("valley shitters"). :p
@@Celrador I don't think Austria or Prussia wanted a unified Germany though, until Bismarck came around - so even if they won, Austria would probably have tried to maintain dominance without unification instead of establishing a Greater Germany imo - unless someone in the upper echelon of Austrian politics became pro-unification
The content of your videos are very good, but the pace is too fast. If you lengthen the videos to 5 minutes and speak slower, it will much easier to follow along and understand.
thank you sir for doing this, I tried 3 other videos and they all gave to much irrelevant details and went too much in depth that it was confusing. this was quick, to the point and encompassing all the details I needed. Thank you.
Very enjoyable and informative series. As a suggestion, would you consider making land and sea different colours on your maps to make it a little easier on the eyes!
Most German States never wanted to be United by Prussia. Many Southern States for example wanted to have a Greater federal Republic together with Austria. For more detailed information read : Europe the Struggle for supremacyby Brendan Simms; Diplomacy by Henry Kissinger
Thank You Soo Much! Im going to Germany and wanted to have a brief over view of their culture and History! This Help Sooo Much!! Thank You For Your Hard Work Dude!!! Stay Awesome and Doing These Amazing History Clips!! ^.^
+The Attitude *Funny thing is that the Czechs, a non Germanic, Slavic people, were the most dominant kingdom in the Holy Roman Empire in the high middle ages before it unified with a Germanic Austria * It was not "the Czechs" though. At some point the Luxemburgs and Habsburgs used to be German kings/emperors and one of their domains was Bohemia. The Czech people hardly had anything to contribute since the Přemyslids and Jan Hus later.
I really like all of the stuff that you are doing and appreciate anyone attempting to teach history in a fun manner. However, if I may make one piece of advice to you, all of the W's in German are pronounced as V's. With this in mind, it would actually be pronounced as "Schlesvig" when you read "Schleswig". Also, I understand and support the idea of doing short videos as to keep the attention of an audience, but I wish you could have elaborated on the, "Kulturkampf" along with how he handled socialists in the nation a bit more due to how I feel as though it was a few examples of Bismarck's excellence as a Chancellor/Prime Minister. All in all, I really like all of the work you are doing and can't wait to see more, I'm also greatly excited by your flag history series coming up soon as well. Needless to say that you have my subscription and that I hope you the best with your work.
When this channel grows (and by the style and amount of this content, I'm certain it will) you gotta use some of that RU-vid monies for a clearer mic. Apart from that, I'm binge watching your videos, keep it up.
any austrian here? i want to know how your feeling after watch this video. become a big country and strong country nearly 600th years and now just a little piece of land in alps, its ridiculous huh
Austria is a great country and me being Bavarian both Austrians and Bavarians are siblings honestly Austria has been the same size for many years and it only became bigger more recently Bavaria was never so big :(
Daniel Santana von Geltendorf only lost sudtirol which ceded to kingdom of italy in ww1 and the rest just dirty multicultural land. yes for sure bavarian and austrian are siblings, they share same language (south german i hear sounds different from prussian german) same religion, both are catholic, thanks for france for unite german people after decalring war on 1871 if austria famous for calssical music, what famous in bavaria? is it beer or what?
At the Congress of Vienna (1815), Austria was already trying to gain power over areas outside the German-speaking area. Prussia tried to gain power over areas within the German-speaking area. Prussia was able to increase its power in Germany, but Austria had to contend with many national movements outside the German-speaking area. Prussia used Austria as an ally, but a short time later Prussia kicked Austria out of German affairs.
Has Jabzy ever checked out Alternate History Hub or Great War channels? The Alternate History channel is super popular and knowing the user might do a joint video just a thought.
The mid to late 19th century saw so many powers rise up. The U.S. was refurnished after it's civil war, Germany and Italy unified, and Japan reformed. Also the first ironclads came from the American Civil War, which would soon change naval warfare forever
I really enjoy these videos. The content is excellent, but I think that if you updated your art style you might be able to attract more people. Just a thought. keep up the good work.
+Jabzy oh no, I'm not saying it's bad. You've done very well for what you have at hand. I just mean there might be some program out there that would make your life easier and give the art a little more pop.
Willhelm I. said once in agony that its not easy to be King under such a Chancellor, because Bismarck was so dominant with his opinions. Thats why Willhelm II. fired him, because he wanted to Rule as Emperor and not as the one who signs Laws from the mind of Bismarck.
2:50 The war started in july 1870 not in 1871. also one of the things that bismarck did to stop them getting incircled was having great relations with russia (something that wilhelm the 2nd didnt stick too, against bismarcks advice)
The only thing i disagree with is how you make it sound like germany started the franco-prussian war. The french king bonaparte III wanted to conquer the west bank of the rhine, that's the main reason he declared war. His claim to the rhineland is also what started the tensions between prussia and france in the first place.
The french were always agressive towards the german states. They successfully conquered alsace lorraine in the 17th century and tried to expand it to the rhine in the rest of germany too. Because germany back then were just loose states.
At the time of the new imperialism; when Africa became devided between the Great Powers ( BerlinConference 1884-1885) another German Identity developed. The Germans, industrial already a bit further then Identity wise, also wantedTo became a world Power and said colonies therefore would be essential. So the "second" common Identity ( again more in Prussia and other industrial regions) was all about colonies and led to the first world war.
One error in your maps of the Kingdom of Prussia is that Prussia gained the Rhineland, to the west of their main body during the Congress of Vienna and their eastern provinces had been connected to each other prior to this. So you got the maps right, but the order should have been larger eastern part then appearance of the western Rhineland provinces.
+Declan Needham Church He also forgot to include the Hohenzollern territories in the Württemberg region, which were also part of Prussia, and then later the Norddeutscher Bund.
+Huw Carey I tend to get the information from a bunch of different places. I don't want to give the impression that I just sit and read numerous books, but instead I read encyclopaedias, brief histories etc. first and then flesh it out using google books. I find that a lot of books focus on one aspect of the conflict and not really explain what was actually happening. For instance a lot on the Boer Wars a lot of books will talk about the damage caused in Britain, books on Napoleon like to talk about his personality and books on the German Empire talk about Bismarck relationship with the Emperor, growth in industry etc.
+Jeremy Salkeld Liechtenstein is far older. It is correct that it became independent from the HRR in 1806, but according to the Westphalian system of 1648, all memberstates of the Empire were proper countries.
As far as I was thought Wilhelm didn't become an Emperor of Germany (nor Emperor of the Germans, as e.g. Napoleon was Emperor of the French - i.e. people, so technically still in republican spirit), but German Emperor. This difference was crucial, as far as I was told, to gain support of all the sides in the German kaleidoscope. Am I right?
Actually we know it wasn't. This coloring was done considerably after the fact. But the original flag still exists. www.demokratiegeschichte.eu/typo3temp/pics/4e9ce9a5bb.jpg We even know the correct order because of the letters written in the red field.
Nein erwin rommel war im 2. Weltkrieg. Ich komme aus heidenheim also versuch mich nicht zu verarschen und allein dein bild mit der reichsflagge sagt alles
After the first world war Germany was solely blamed to have caused the war. It was disarmed, the colonies were taken, Prussia had to give up land, the reparation Payments were huge.Compared to other "European wars" for example the thirty years war or the Napolionic wars, where at the end just borders were retreated where they were before and theBalance of Power was restored ( Peace of Westphalia/ Vienna Conference) this was a novum. Many Germans after theWar poor and having lost all they were fighting for -again to become a world Power and have colonies- couldn't find an other sense in life or an other identity except to get it all back.
First one need a decent chancellor in Germany before any thing can be done. Same in Austria also, but they have President. Then the tricky part is East Prussia , divided with Poland and baltic nations. One other thing to work one is let Finland get Karelen back . What to give to Russia , one wonder . Well its soon Thanksgiving and Turkey time.
What was Germany like under Prussian control? Did Prussia make rules for Germany? Did Germany eventually have a revolution like America did with England?
