Danny Boy
Oh, Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side.
The summer's gone, and all the roses falling,
It's you, it's you must go and I must bide.
But come ye back when summer's in the meadow,
Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow,
It's I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow,
Oh, Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so
But when ye come, and all the flowers are dying,
If I am dead, as dead I well may be,
You'll come and find the place where I am lying,
And kneel and say an Ave there for me.
And I shall hear, though soft you tread above me,
And all my grave will warmer, sweeter be,
For you will bend and tell me that you love me,
And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me

Thank you for recording this. It's so hard to find Scots versions, as most are Irish. My Grandmother was from Balloch and always sung this to us as kids. After she had a stroke she was bed ridden for three years and couldn't speak. But i would whisper the first line in her ear and she could sing the whole song right through. She died in 1994. Now it's 2022 and I'm looking after Mum who has late stage Alzheimer's. I've driven her up to Scotland and Loch Lomond three times in the last 12 months, and it's such a very special place. Playing this song to Mum, and seeing her sing along brings tears to my eyes. Chokes me up. Thank you for your beautiful rendition.

For my Father Sidney who loved this song and for his younger brother Danny. They both went to the Second World War aged 20 and 18 but only my father came home from that war. Thank you Ella my dad would have loved this so much.

I am not Irish, but every time I listen too this song tears run down my cheeks and I have a runny nose. The Irish and the Scotties can really get to you with their songs.

It's not Irish. It's written by an Englishman to a tune called a "Londonderry Air" Londonderry is a distinctly English name for the Irish Derry in Northern Ireland.
@paulduffy4585

@@TheDarkstormy it is an old Irish air from County Derry, a melody. Sent to Frederic Weatherly by his Irish born sister in 1918. He put his own words to it, as people will often do with airs. (She moved through the Fair.) But I assure you that this is an Irish air. It is from Ireland.

Btw, "Northern Ireland" didn't exist in 1918.
