I think the author wanted to tell us that all those blind people chose themselves to be blind or were raised to be blind and so they think it is normal to be blind. About the nine-eleven terrorists, probably the author wanted to tell us that these terrorists were raised blind, I mean they were raised with some seriously nonsense faith that killing innocent people is a good and kind thing. And there is also a chance that these terrorists were realizing that such act is nonsense and bad and evil, but they were psychologically forced by the terroristic community where they were raised. In short, sometimes people are so heavily brainwashed that they have heavily decreased the ability to think critically and determine good and bad things from their natural sense of conscience/morality.
