I love how people make fun of Lars, but he changed the game. I get it. I have been a drummer for 45 years. But he was better than whatever came before him. "for his music" Keep in mind his drumming & music did not exist before him.
Ummmmmmmm...Bill Ward? Neil Peart? John Bonham? All did what Lars imitated in a much less impressive way. He literally took from the same influences they did, but was nowhere near as naturally gifted. All you gen x'ers and you're blind love of Lars. Like seriously, there were before, during, and especially after, Lars' prime better drummers than Lars on the market. I get it, y'all love Metallica, but come on, go listen to the actual greats.
I was gonna say no it's Justin, because those tool basslines are incredible. But then I remember that distinctive mid-heavy, growling, Adam guitar tone. And of course, Tool with anyone but Maynard would simply not work. So pretty much Tool is a completely equal band. No flat tire, no one to carry the team. Just a perfect union of contrary things.
The feel comes from Danny and justin, there sound is heavily dependent on all 4 members. Just listen to newest album, dangers playing only became more danneyesk, meanwhile it sounds completely different. That's because Mjk and Adam changed their sounds differently
I love these videos. Obviously they are for fun, but they do show how instrumental it is to have the right drummer in your band. A guy could be all-world at drumming but if he doesn't mesh with what you're doing, its not going to maximize the song. I've never been a fan of Lars' personality, but he is the right drummer for Metallica. It doesn't matter how much more technical the other guys are.
Okay. Well. I love Danny Carey. Super underrated musician. And this song is iconic. But on a "Didnt Work" Scale, I'm giving this a 12/8. (See what I did there?) But yeah...didnt work.
I have to agree, but at the same time I think that's one of the great things about these videos. Showing not only what works but also what doesn't helps you see the strengths and weaknesses of each approach
Imagine an alternate reality in which James, Cliff (RIP) and Mustaine went to a gig and saw Danny Carey playing. You can bet that Lars would've been demoted to merch guy the very next day...
It would be cool if you would try to imitate Baard Kolstad (leprous) or Gavin Harrison (Porcupine tree). My favourite drummers.. To makeit interesting play it like Rick Allen (def leppard). Good luck ;)
Lots of people give Lars a hard time in the RU-vid Comment Section about his drumming. I’m not a fan of Lars due to his personality (Total Douchebag) but Lars was once a decent drummer. I’m 40 years old and have been playing drums since I was 6 years old. I mainly play Tech Death Metal in the realm of Cryptopsy, Origin, Archspire style. When I was a kid playing drums my favorite drummers were: John Bohnam-Led Zeppelin Dave Lombardo-Slayer Gene Hoglan- Many bands😂 Buddy Rich Vinnie Paul- Pantera Alex Van Halen Neil P.-Rush Igor C.-Sepultura Etc Etc Etc And yes, Lars from Metallica. I started off learning these bands songs. Metallica “used to be” one of my favorite bands until they sold out for 💰 and went from in your face Metal to Hard Rock so they could appeal to a bigger crowd. It started off with the Black Album. Everything slowed down in the band. They became just a tad heavier than AC/DC and even Lars drumming went into AC/DC mode! I was devastated when I heard the Black Album and so were a lot of other fans. Then “Load” came out (Load of Shit) and Metallica had completely sold out even there image did too. All the members got there hair cut short and Kirk even got a Lip Ring,🤦♂️. There new image was even on the cover of the Load Album with them all sitting around a table all clean cut. Anyways, back to Lars drumming. His best drumming and most technical was on “And Justice For All, so you can understand how let down I was when the Black Album came out! When Metallica first started out, each album they came out with kept getting heavier and more technical. Every album Metallica did before the Black Album was a masterpiece. So yeah. Lars was once a good drummer. Also, mad props to Slayer for always staying true to Metal. They are STILL cranking out some brutal heaviness!
This kinda proves that the marriage between Lars and Metallica is exactly what it needs to be. LARS isn’t the best drummer by a long shot, but he fits in Metallica exactly like he needs to
Please keep doing what you are doing. The facts are mounting! Some drummers are right for the band. Some, not so much, but fun - none the less. Metallica = Ulrich No question. Much like AC/DC had the perfect drummer Sometimes simple is stronger!
Do you have a video done after practicing a bit. Some of the drumming had really good sound with the song. Im sure this ws done on a whim. Do you have another video after practicing this song? If so, can you send me the link? Id like to hear it. Not that yiu didnt do a good job this time around, just a little off beat at times. With a little more thought im sure its awesome. Hopeope to get a response.
Needs more tribal drumming, unique drum fills you never hear again, unique drum solos you never hear again, gong, and...cowbell. Well, you tried at least 😐
