I've known of the song for a long time, as have most people, yet never listened to it by choice until I came across this version. I listen to it regularly, even saved this audio, because the video plays in my mind. The mutual respect and obvious joy these two have for each other and performing with one another, not caring about race or gender or any meaningless description people nowadays strive to categorize, it's amazing how they're just two AMAZING people who love music and don't let ignorance come between that, it's amazing and refreshing to witness and listen to:)
This scene is from the movie "The Five Pennies", about the life of Red Nichols, played by Danny Kaye. It's a great movie (imo), with many great musical numbers. This is one of my favorites from the movie, and my favorite version of this song that I've heard so far.
@@YouLittleRascal ...Oh, I'm so glad! It's a great one to come back to. I searched it out intentionally, and found this video first. It's always stuck with me since I watched the movie long ago. I need to watch it again. I love these two gentlemen, and their amazing talent, as well! Enjoy! And Happy Holidays!
WELL that's solidly true but in TURKEY , in city of ISTANBUL , lives a singer : FATİH ERKOÇ... Trace his youtube tape " when the st go marchin in"" ...
Well, this must be the best pair of Cool Cats I`ve ever seen & heard. . Nobody can top Louis in his field, and Danny Kaye is my childhood hero. (Yup, I`m that old). Seeing those two together is just priceless. LOVE!
I'm not that old (Danny died 10 months before I was born to give you an idea of how not old I am), but Danny is my childhood hero also. I was raised on White Christmas, The Inspector General, and The Court Jester and I've loved him for my entire life. I recently discovered his full body of work thanks to a friend in europe who had access to more than I do here in America and its been such a treat. I'm head over heels in love with Danny, his talent, his heart for children, his passion for unicef, his voice; but most of all I'm in love with the way he smiles, and he's absolutely magic in this clip!!! His smile at the end when he's belting that high note! Unf!!!! It's the most gorgeous thing I've ever seen. I wish I were older because if I were, perhaps I would have been fortunate enough to have met Danny in person once upon a long lost decade. Ahhh. If only.
@@NashaDean ...I feel the same way. I'm a little bit older than you (born in '71), and Danny Kaye is one of my favorites, too. I've loved watching him since I was a kid. He was so multi-talented. What other works have you seen that are not available in the USA? I would love to try to look them up sometime, if possible.
Thanks Erez. Louis' legend speaks for itself. Those who know, remember what an unbelievably versatile talent Danny Kaye was. Back in those days, you had to be able to sing, act, dance (including tap) and that was just for starters. Danny, Mickey Rooney, Sammy Davis Jr., my dad Mel, Gene Kelly, Gregory Hines (to update it a bit). I admire those people so much because it takes HOURS and HOURS of rehearsal to be that good. Cream of the crop.
... Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Come to Jesus Christ today Jesus Christ is only way to heaven Repent and follow him today seek his heart Jesus Christ can fill the emptiness he can fill the void Seek his Holy Spirit for guidance peace and purpose today Heaven and hell is real cone to the loving savior today Today is the day of salvation tomorrow might be to late come to the loving savior today John 3:16-21 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God. Mark 1.15 15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel. 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. Hebrews 11:6 6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. Jesus

This is one of the most useful comments I've ever crossed on this site. English isn't my native lenguage, I can understand most of what they say, but some things are almost impossible to me and couldn't figure them out! Thank you! ♥
Great movie that is so hard to find! Netflix needs to get more classics going and less modern crap. I can watch this a thousand times over and over. Fucking amazing.
What makes this so amazing is that these two amazing gentlemen were not just top tier entertainers, they are two of the best people to have lived. Two men who have no rational haters.
Louis is EVERYTHING right in the world and people. You can feel the mutual respect for one another Danny and Louis have during the entirety of this, as well the mutual joy and love for music they obviously love sharing with one another and others. I come back time and time again to this one video, and listen to the audio often, because it's more than just the amazing music that's being made. It's the coming together of previously separated people (black and white) who don't allow mistakes of the past or worries of tomorrow, destroy the peace of the present and understanding that we are ALL equal, as can be our love and admiration for music and the GREAT musicians that create for the world. I wonder if Louis and Danny knew, they would exist on the very list they were making of BELOVED and CHERISHED Masters of Music.
I love the bit where they play with composers' names! Also had no idea that Danny Kaye was so adept at scat singing; my head is stuck at his work in "White Christmas" and "Hans Christian Anderson". Now I need to see this movie.
Stumbled onto this record at a thrift store. Picked it up and played it when I got home. I've never seen the movie or heard any of this before. Now I'm hooked.
Watched this film one night, a few days prior to Christmas 1959. I was awaiting a flight to Malta, and billeted in transit at RAF Hendon, UK. Got aboard my new ship just in time for a turkey dinner! I was just 20! Oh yes... Happy Days.
This brings me back to my first time trying authentic chicken gumbo in NOLA. I wasn’t expecting it, and it blew me away. NOLA has created so many great things, whether it be food, entertainers, history, etc.
One of the most prominent and stunning features in the Paramount Pictures' 1959 classic film The Five Pennies is the upbeat jazz number of "When The Saints Go Marching In" by the two world-renowned Legendary Greats- Mr Louie Armstrong and Mr Danny Kaye.Their duet can be truly described as brilliantly-performed,well-synthesized,skillfully-syncopated,and amply-improvised.The ever-multifaceted Danny Kaye had amusingly, competently, and sublimely imitated Mr Armstrong's gravelly-voice trademark.
Hollywood put out some pretty good movies back there in 1959. I mean, for knockout music, we saw THE FIVE PENNIES again and again, and some other 1959 movies had music scores that pulled me back into theaters to see them again--PORGY AND BESS, though revised as a musical, was my introduction to that great Gershwin opera, and the multi-Oscar-winner BEN-HUR had a symphonic opera of a score by Miklos Rozsa! And let's not forget Bernard Herrmann, who gave me a grand time in NORTH BY NORTHWEST and JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH! Thank heaven we can still see these movies (except, for no good reason, PORGY AND BESS), and enjoy this fantastic performance by Louis Armstrong and Danny Kaye!
All the entertainment industry wants today is sex appeal and a gimmick. Talent is no longer required and it's a true shame because it's cost us truly great entertainment like this. I wish Hollywood would go back to it's old ways of actually TRYING to produce great films and fabulous music like this. The quality was unequalled! and the stars??? DEAR GOD THE TALENT THEY POSSESSED! Danny Kaye was a powerhouse, completely unique and one of a kind. He could literally do everything and MORE; the way he could scat sing has proven impossible to imitate. No one has ever been able to do what Danny Kaye could do. We lost a one of a kind, one man show stopping talent when he passed away. and his last words were "there's so much more I want to do." I wish he had of had more time on this earth. We need men with his heart and talent today. Sorely.
