I read some of the comments at Hardline's version of this song, originally released by Danny Spanos. It's a toast to you and your great voice, man! Enjoy the song!
Danny was my friend ! Late 1979 , I was in a band playing all the Hollywood clubs, I was the front man/ singer from Venice, I was his friend! He called me a good friend!
I once won a free drink at a topless establishment when the DJ said whoever tells me who sang this song first wins. I was 10 feet away and I immediately said "Danny Spanos!" dude was shocked. it was like 1994.
+Liquidmice9 Just outta curiosity, where did you live when you first heard it? I ask because Danny always seemed to me to have pockets of fans in certain areas, rather that all over. He's from Michigan, and he did well there and in Ontario when I was in HS. He was also hot in California like Rick said, but I live in the Southern US now, and I've never found anyone who knows the song.
I know you weren't asking me, but as another data point: I heard this version, I assume when it was new, on 98Rock in Baltimore, MD. I loved it immediately.. (I can understand people coming at this from hearing Hardline first may not care for it, and I have probably come to like the Hardline version more, but this still holds up). As far as I recall, it's the only song by Spanos I ever heard. I don't remember it being a huge hit hereabouts, but I think people liked it well enough. Just my $0.02.
Hardline USA who went under the name brunette before getting big and Streetheart Canada are the only other bands to cover this and another unknown singer, Steve Thomson.
Yes, what a great song. I loved every bit of it. I had a girlfriend back in the 80's and we listen to it a lot. She automatically went all over me when it came on and you know I put it on all the time! God bless ya Danny, RIP
Back in the day, when i first heard "hot Cherie" on the radio, i went out to the record store the following pay day to grab the tape. I played the flavor out of that tape. Little did I know that i'd meet and work with a girl named Cherie-shoulda been my wife, but that's another story :)...... ah, good times!! Still a good song after all these years.
I first discovered this song very randomly. I was watching "All the Right Moves" starring Tom Cruise and saw Danny Spanos in the credits. I entered his name into youtube and found Hot Cherie. It has been one of my favourite songs for 10 years now. Spanos is the man!
For those who are interested, none of Danny Spanos 3 LP albums were ever re-released on CD. Such a shame since the interest for a CD would be great. Record executives - such geniuses! DUH! This song is available only CD format on "Heard It On The Radio" Volume 2 which is a various artists compilation issued on Renaissance records.
I love this song very much performed by Hardline, not knowing that they didn’t write it themselves. I’m a rock fan, so I guess their version is the one for me. But thank you Spanos, the song is superb 🙌
If I had to pick just one song to be representative of the 80's "lost gem", you're listening to it. Other artists versions are okay, too, but Spanos completely nailed it with a unique sound on both instrumental and vocal work. I also feel that no other line has ever been written to surpass the core of utter romance than the lake and campfire scene so eloquently painted into this piece.
LOVE Danny's version the best you were and are the man Danny! I remember listening to this driving around the hood in Cleveland, OH in early 80's did not know who sang it till years later great song from my teen years.
Memories, this is the version I remember as a VERY YOUNG GIRL,Hardline then came out with a great version a few years later.WOW WHAT MEMORIES SOME songs can bring
I had never heard Hardline's version until just now. Sorry, but Danny Spanos did it first and best! Hardline took all of the passion out of this song; Danny Spanos sings it with intensity and desperation!
Danny Spanos - a star that never quite "took off" ... I agree with another comment that the "desperation" and "yearning" in his voice is just amazing ... this guy could, and should have been a big star ... back when I was booking concerts at UF in the early 80s I remember a major agency (Premier?) was pushing him for college dates, but then suddenly he was pulled off the road ... lifestyle issues allegedly, but it's still a great song
He is Giorgos Spanos. Aka George Spanos. Aka Danny Spanos. Greek drummer from US played in some groups until he released his own work. Where are you man? We miss you!
I love, love, love this song. It was my favorite song when I was in Junior High School. I looked for it on mp3 a few years ago and couldn't find it but now it's available for download. Great Song!!!
@@josemariaricardodomingues7 Hi there! Just so you know , the original also is not Danny Spanos'. The original was written and performed by the Canadian band called " Streetheart". Its their song and Spanos and Hardline both covered it. Check it out. They were an amazing band .
I knew Danny and his wife Carol. He was a premier drummer on the Hollywood circuit and remember 1983 very well in the high deserts at his house. He gave me my first real drum lessons and I gave him lyrics and friendship. Long story. RIP Danny and Carol? I hope you are well.
man! i grew up with my dad playing this song over and over. He lost his record and has bitched ever since. I am totally gonna take this and put on a cd. your a pal
THIS version is a cover as well. The Canadian band Streetheart recorded this before Spanos did. But, I'd have to say this is the definitive version, in my opinion. Whoever said this guy's voice was worse than the dude from Hardline is obviously tone deaf.
Oh yes. This is the version I remember. I never knew who sang it though and listened to Hardline's first but knew that wasn't it. Danny Spanos' is THE ONE. The FIRST and the BEST.
+Zutulem Yes, after I wrote that comment I realized it was not the original version and moreover I was confident that someone on here would call me on it, lol. But yeah thanks for the info. Still my fav though. So may not be the FIRST, but it's STILL the BEST in my book. (:o)
Not to argue, my friend, but I recall this Danny Spanos' version being popular the sweet summer of 1983 when I turned 16......I'm pretty certain about it. At least we can agree we both have great taste in rock.
Nice version. Canadian band Streetheart wrote it in 1983, but their LP never got released until 1984. Spanos just got his recording released first, but he didn’t write it.
His was the first I heard, as it happened. And as it happened I was in love with a girl named Sherie at the time. Crazy. It was much later that I caugh onto the Streetheart version, but this Spanos version was the original for me, as much as I love Streetheart.
Yeah, I agree!!! I remember when this first came out in 83' I think. The only recording I had of it was off the radio with tons of static and of course the tape was mangled. Thanks for posting the original. Nothing beats this version!!!
I used to listen to this in the 80's and LOVED it. Then I heard Harline's and wasn't that impressed with Hardline. But the more I listened to it, the more I liked it, and now I like both versions . What a GREAT song!!
Hi Kitty, you can find Danny/George on this guys' channel: he appears sometimes on there: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uC1kOg5YM7A.html
I was at a small event called The Mojave, California Gold Rush Parade in the 80's. There was a small stage in the park that was setup for the event. There were a few local musician that had spotted Danny there at the event. Some of the locals knew Danny as a kid from the Mojave Desert and pleaded with Danny to come up on stage and do this song. It was the first time that I had heard this song. Danny's voice was so spectacular and the band was equally wonderful as the evening started to get dark. I will never forget this song and that night for as long as I live. I kid you not Danny's voice was SO STRONG, SO CLEAR. I have heard that Danny went to Hollywood, California and got lost in the crowd down there. He will always be welcome to show up here in the park in Mojave, California to rock our desert any time. [[[ This man's voice is incredibly. ]]]
This jam reminds me of hanging out with some friends at millerton lake after gathering some hot chicks so they can flash thier new bikinis good old days, thanx for the memorys
Hardline's version is just different. This is from a different musical era, with a different musical instrument emphasis. Additionally, Hardline is basically doing a cover of this song...Hardline's is modern and tight, but I prefer the vocals on this version.
always wanted to hear the original and to be honest, i prefer the Hardline cover version. more loud guitars and less saxaphone, LOL! just makes me wonder how Neil Schon and Hardline came across this song and ultimately decided to re-record the song. then it was their 1st single-someone in that band or team was very, very smart
ok, i just played the hardline version. it was different buy no way as good as the original. no sax.....or clear cymbal hits. and danny you have a raw and sexy voice. god i love this song........... been playin it for 20 years!!! (guess my age and weight) would love to see it live........diane
