I remember thinking I know this dude from blood in blood out, here he is trying to tell us how he stopped messing around and got his life together. 15 years later I was able to have him come to San Pedro and and speak at a facility for drug recovery. This is called the “Shoe War”. The Mafia consisted of all Mexicans evidently, however, the poorer members were from northern CA and were seen as inferior because of their farm working family roots. (Hence, the Adoption of Ca United Farm Worker bird as a norteño logo.) So the poorer members would get punked on by other members and they soon got fed up with the stolen shoes being the breaking point. As a result they broke into their own gangs known as the Norteños adopting red as their color since it is seen as the opposite of the Sureños blue.
