I've always thought this piece should be played with a healthy infusion of rubato and personal gusto. Your approach is right in line with my thinking. Thanks for the super great tips! :)
It's rustic dance, open strings give the sound needed. Not 3rd/4th position A/D/G/C 1st or 4th finger, yes you get resonance from the string but it doesn't linger due to clipping the string for those high notes on A string
