La figure de Georges Cziffra, cet illustre pianiste hongrois devenu français par sa volonté d'intégration et par l'intercession bienveillante du Général de Gaulle, reste attachée à Senlis parce qu'il y a vécu un bon quart de son existence et qu'il y a fait restaurer, après l'avoir acquis en 1973, l'un des monuments les plus intéressants de la ville. Cette chapelle Saint-Frambourg, reconnue comme la première « sainte chapelle royale » de France, est devenue en 1977, grâce à son infatigable énergie et à son inépuisable générosité, l'auditorium Franz Liszt, haut lieu de musique qui par-delà les frontières renoue les liens d'une Hongrie perdue et d'une patrie retrouvée. La mort de Georges Cziffra survenue en janvier 1994 n'a pas rompu l'unité ainsi établie : surmontant les difficultés, Soleilka Cziffra a su perpétuer l'oeuvre entreprise, parachevant l'édifice par la pose d'une charpente nouvelle et d'une magnifique toiture et, en prolongeant, à travers la Fondation que Georges Cziffra avait créée, des activités de concerts orientées, selon le voeu du maestro, vers la découverte de jeunes artistes. Installé à Senlis tout près de « sa » chapelle, Georges Cziffra a poursuivi sa carrière de virtuose tout en consacrant une grande partie de son temps à la formation des jeunes interprètes venus se perfectionner auprès d'un maître au rayonnement artistique exceptionnel. C'est à partir de 1980 qu'il a décidé d'enregistrer à Saint-Frambourg. Bravant les difficultés acoustiques en déployant d'immenses tentures, les ingénieurs d'EMI ont réussi à capter le son du piano le plus naturellement et offert au maestro les meilleures conditions de travail dans un confort presque domestique. Georges Cziffra est revenu à ses premières amours, les « préclassiques », Couperin, Daquin et Rameau dont les pièces de clavecin l'enchantaient. Tous ces titres témoignent de l'extraordinaire maitrise technique et de la musicalité instinctive que Georges Cziffra a déployées durant sa vie, fruits d'un labeur incessant et d'une infaillible volonté de dominer le texte pour se mettre au service de l'interprétation. Remeau and Couperin were just too 'too' for my young ear in music school. Age and experience has opened up the world of the early French for me. I am tremendously grateful to God. I am relieved to find that our spirit, and therefore our musical universe, can still expand in the final decades.

Cziffra is one of those rare pianists that operates on light touch and styling. But boy, how precise musically and stylistically he is on the point! To elicit soft melancholic veil over straightforward following the composer's score demands some technical finesse and stylistic sensitivity of extreme grade. Baroque on piano is never ending debate we are not going to enmesh into. Cziffra is making piano argument utterly convincing by putting possibilities of the instrument to highlight this specifically french moody sonic atmosphere, liquid rhythmical figures, elegant unshowy articulation and thus to immerse the listener into the sound world of each composer he favors. Such sublime musicality is rare gift in any musician that is subsequently shared with us, the listeners. Spellbinding...

In 1966, this keyboard magician, Georges Cziffra, became a patron of the arts. First of all, he restored with his son Gyorgy Jr., then a young conductor, the magnificent organs of the Abbey of Chaise-Dieu in Auvergne (France); he created, in this high place of spirituality, a Music Festival, where young talented artists can present themselves alongside great masters. In 1968, he created with the city of Versailles an international piano competition, whose laureates he endeavours to make known. In 1973, Cziffra acquired the Chapelle Royale Saint-Frambourg in Senlis, the cradle of France, which was sadly converted into a car park. However, a thousand years ago, Adelaide, widow of Hugues Capet, queen and wife of the King, dedicated it to another Auvergnat, Saint-Frambourg. Cziffra acquired it, let excavations take place, and, with the help of many benefactors, undertook a titanic restoration. His goal: "To restore and glorify this chapel through Music and dedicate it to all the Arts". Restored, the chapel became a Temple of Art. Interprétation grandiose que celle de Cziffra dans les œuvres pour clavier de Rameau. Et c’est sans parler d’une des plus belle version des barricades mystérieuses de Couperin. Le pianiste est également un maître dans Liszt, des rhapsodies hongroises aux concertos. Mais pour moi il n’égale pas Marcelle Meyer dans la musique baroque française, même s’il fait un second admirable, devant Sokolov. On nous parle sans cesse de la supériorité du clavecin dans ces œuvres, cependant Meyer et Cziffra nous prouvent que le piano mérite largement sa place d’égal.

Very interesting playing,. Lyrical, a lot of inner voices controlled in dynamics. Lots of stunning legato. The Le tic-toc-choc ou les maillotins where he put the legato in the first phrase and repeats with staccato. Such fun

Great to hear Cziffra's look at these seminal French baroque pieces. They sound much more "pianistic" compared to the "harpsichordic" sound of Grigory Sokolov's piano. Of course, there is also Scott Ross with the original harpsichord rendition. One can enjoy and equally both interpretations and find new voices in the well-known melodies. It is not possible to list all other memorable renditions, e.g., Wanda Landowska, etc... And please don't go into who's better! :-)
