Dar es Salaam (/ˌdɑːr ɛs səˈlɑːm/; from Arabic: دَار السَّلَام, romanized: Dār as-Salām, lit. 'Abode of Peace') is the largest city and financial hub of Tanzania. It is also the capital of Dar es Salaam Region. With a population of over six million people, Dar es Salaam is the largest city in East Africa and the sixth-largest in Africa. Located on the Swahili coast, Dar es Salaam is an important economic centre and is one of the fastest-growing cities in the world.
The town was founded by Majid bin Said, the first Sultan of Zanzibar, in 1865 or 1866. It was the main administrative and commercial center of German East Africa, Tanganyika, and Tanzania. The decision was made in 1974 to move the capital to Dodoma which was officially completed in 1996.
Dar es Salaam is Tanzania's most prominent city for arts, fashion, media, film, television, and finance. It is the capital of the co-extensive Dar es Salaam Region, one of Tanzania's 31 administrative regions, and consists of five districts: Kinondoni in the north; Ilala in the centre; Ubungo and Temeke in the south; and Kigamboni in the east across the Kurasini estuary.

It’s too many factors that makes it difficult for us to thrive in our own country.. starting with banks , our banks makes so easy for foreigners to secure a good loan deal than us , second we have Tanzanian abroad who can secure loans from banks overseas or have their own capital to invest but the government won’t let them own properties because Tanzania doesn’t have duo citizenship.

@@TheNorm254lol Nairobi is ahead in what areas? The only reason Nairobi looks lively is because it’s disorganised and chaotic city! Everything is congested in the city centre plus you lot still have those unsightly teenage dream short buses aptly nicknamed matatus still plying their way deep in the CBD, this is definitely NOT how you grow a cosmopolitan city by any stretch of the imagination!!

DAR CITY COUNCIL REALLY NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT ALL THOSE OLD DILAPIDATED BUILDINGS, THEY ARE REALLY HOLDING BACK THE CITY’S FULL POTENTIAL AND MESSING UP DAR AESTHETICS!! THEY SHOULD REALLY ORDER THESE OWNERS TO EITHER PAINT THEM OVER OR RENOVATE THEM, IT’S NOT SUCH A FOREIGN CONCEPT NOW, IS IT? SMH

What does that even mean “ owned by the government? “ the PEOPLE are the GVT & those that run the place are only ELECTED officials nothing more nothing less! Never in your life ever say that statement again “there’s nothing we can do about it” that’s a DEFEATIST mentality & it’s worse than slavery!! There’s ALWAYS a way around or through anything, nothing is impossible When you put your mind to it and have actions matching your ambition!! I still stand by my ORIGINAL statement, those building are an EYESORE, something needs doing ASAP! Also this city needs ROAD MARKINGS, more TRAFFIC & STREET lights, Bollards, Railings & those funny roundabouts needs a proper LANDSCAPER to work on them!! It’s the CBD but looks like some upcountry backwater!!
