Could someone tell me, what language does Mr O'Cathain speak (before the perfomance of the song)? It seems to me, that I can recognise several English words.
@@danielbrien6937 This is hubris originating from the Anglicised education system. "Gaeilge" is only said in south Connacht, so why should anyone outside of south Connacht say it? In Leinster, Meath and Ulster a variation of Gaeilic was said, which is where Gaeilge comes from, Gaeilic being the nominative and technically more grammatically correct than Gaeilge. Even now older native Irish speakers will refer to it as Gaelic in English. Why use an English word to describe our language when Gaelic originally (and still does) refer to our culture and language?
@@adammacgreagoir4924 If you're speaking English and you're naming a language, you call it by its English name, not by its name in the language you're talking about. People don't say, "I speak français," "I speak Español," "I speak Deutsch," but rather "I speak French," "I speak Spanish," "I speak German." In the same way, people say, in English, "I speak Irish." That's not hubris. It's just normal.
Ó Catháin, not "O'Cathain". He's speaking Irish, a Gaelic, Celtic and Indo-European language. The only English word he utters are "Rebel song", a term with somewhat brand recognition, not unlike a French speaker saying "iPhone".
