Daredevil #1 - Atop the Fourth Wall 

I love how it's pretty much IMPOSSIBLE to read the narration of a Silver Age Marvel comic WITHOUT having Stan Lee's voice reading it in your head. *sigh* Rest well, Mr. Lee.

I really liked the retcon they put in later that the reason his first costume is yellow is because he made it from the robe his dad would wear to the ring.

"I fear it's going to be taken away from me." You know, this aged very well in light of streaming platforms pulling content in recent years.

This Fixer part makes ironic sense when you realise that the first significant work Frank Miller ever did was finalising pencils for Daredevil. He's also the one who killed Elektra and ruined Matt Murdoch's life.

Daredevil is an example of a superhero who's weakness is his power. He super senses aside from his vision. If you shoot a really loud gun next to his ear it completely disorientates him.

Fun fact, Dennis Dunphy later used Daredevil's old costume as his own..and after years of being forgotten, he finally gets to be cool again.

I'm going to ask a very stupid question: How exactly is a blind superhero that's been invented for a visual medium (i.e. comic books) supposed to appeal to the blind, who can't read comics at all? Wouldn't a hero like that work better for an audio drama or radio play? Bob: "Hey, Steve! Check out what I got you for Christmas! It's a Daredevil comic!" Steve: "Bob, you know I'm blind! I couldn't read comics if I wanted to." Bob: "I know, but Daredevil's blind, too. And he's awesome!" Steve: "If you say so..." Bob: *turns some pages* "Wow, Daredevil's got the coolest costume ever." Steve: "I'll take your word for it." Bob: "Whoa, I've never seen anyone jump like that!" Steve: "Neither have I."

The only issue I always kinda had with Daredevil is that, for all the talk of how he's blind, he never seems all too hindered by this life-changing effect. You have so many benefits, but doesn't seem to have much of a shortcoming to his life. I suppose things like writing on the wall, defining colour or watching video would certainly be tough, but for the perception of depth, laying out his surroundings and alike, he seems to have equal capasity to a regular humans, but in all directions, so you could argue he sees *better* after he went blind. At least from all that I've witnessed. Having an all-range, 360 detector is an awsome super-power and it's not like it'd inheritly undermine his handicap. It just needed restriction. If it was only like a 5-meter or below radius or something, it would still emphesize his blindness and come off as a balancer. Being completely aware of everything within his zone, yet absolutely blinded to the world outside of that and needing to close distances (Villains like Bullseye making for a perfect anti-thesis) or utilize his other hightened senses.

The lie detector thing never bothered me, to be honest. I know the real-world polygraph is unreliable, prone to interpreter bias, and its use can actually poison the results, but...I mean, this is a guy who's had some pretty ridiculous powers. At one point, I remember him being able to recognise individual people based on their hearth rhythm. It's so over-the-top, I'm inclined to give it to him. Also, apparently at some point his powers were so awesome he could read print through laminated plastic. I mean, obviously nobody has to agree with me. I'm just saying it would probably bother me if it was on some forensic show, but not with the Man -Who Can Feel Colour- Without Fear.

Can you imagine how funny it would be if this line about "the prized first edition" and "one of your most beloved comics" or whatever would be in Action Comics No 1?

Remembering that line from sky high "kids who get bit by radioactive animals or fall in to nuclear waste, their powers normally show up the next day. Or, they die"

Okay, my quick search here didn't bring any results, so here my answer: They DO bring up that his eyesight can be fixed. Matt fears this will dull his other senses again, so he tries to avoid it, even though Karen really pushes him towards this, so he can be fixed to be able to marry...I mean, so he can live a happy life, of course. When he finally does visit the ONLY surgeon capable of the operation, said surgeon is captured by a monarch and held against his will, only to sacrifice his life for the freedom of all, giving Matt a nice excuse why all this didn't work out. Also, very obvious in the first few issues: Daredevil was also introduced as a copy to Spider-Man: A young teenage hero prone to wisecrack. It's the same way the X-Men were conceived as a copy of the Fantastic Four, down to being heroes of the public at first and easily trusted by the military. And a third thing: Daredevil notices himself, how stupid it was, not actually having a tape-recorder in his cane. He changes this right after this issue

Oh, you noticed the Fantastic Four thing too. I've often wondered if Fantastic is genuinely supposed to be just an adjective.

Blind people really appreciated a blind superhero? I know being blind doesn't take away your ability to appreciate a narrative or character, but aren't comics a largely visual form of media? I feel the harsh irony would've overcome any benefits of representation...but hey, since they DID appreciate it, I guess I can't complain outside of my confusion.

I like to believe that daredevil hade a yellow suit because he couldn’t tell the difference between red and yellow and the guy at the fabric store lied to him because they where out of red.

Matt sure is lucky the bullies called him daredevil. As while he was able to create a good superhero identity. But it could have gone way worse.

In case you do get the urge to watch something on Netflix in the future, I'd recommend using a friend's code to use it. You don't have to pay for anything and no harm comes to your friend's account (unless you embarrass them with some movie or television show in their viewing history). Speaking of which, the issue of Matt's father winning the fight to make his son proud was handled better there. In that version, Matt was a kid and his senses allowed him to overhear that his father was planning to throw the fight, so his faith in his father was put to the test.

About that promise Matt’s dad made to his wife before she died, I’m pretty sure the the intent is that he made that promise himself to her, rather than her asking him to promise that. Though the joke is still pretty funny

Yeah, Frank hasn't wrote alot of good stuff lately, but his retcon of Daredevil's origins did explain how he was an instantanious acrobat other than "radioation did it". I liked his dark additions to the myth os and. I think his Daredevil work is some of his best work.

In regards to Netflix, there's always their DVD/Blu Ray plans, where you can pretty much get nearly anything you can think of. You also don't have to worry about being online or it being available for streaming. On the other side, you have to wait for your movie in the mail, and it's still a monthly fee so there's that to consider.

Why hasn't there been a Crossover with Daredevil and TMNT yet?

Two notable retcons about Daredevil’s origin: The truck carrying the radioactive waste was owned by Tony Stark (though given this was revealed in a What If?, its canonicity should be taken with a grain of salt for 616) The guy he saved during the accident was in the midst of molesting his own daughter (sadly, this is hard canon, with Matt regretting that he ended up losing his sight to save someone who didn’t deserve it)

Ah, Daredevil, The Man Without Fear Himself. I may be in the minority when I write this, but I tend to be more of a fan of the COMICS than I am his Netflix show (and yes, I'm looking forward to his sequel show on Disney +). The comics made him acrobatic and unstoppable, as opposed to the show which made him into a living punching bag. Seriously, almost EVERY episode seemed to show Matt Murdock get his ass kicked, to a point where I wondered if I was supposed to take him seriously as a hero. I get that it supposed to be a form of "realism" but in REAL LIFE a person who sustained THAT MUCH INJURY should probably have been permeant enough to put Daredevil out of commission for life.

I think Daredevil added the second D and another reason for his costume change is it's similarly to another Marvel hero called Demolition Man, who also had a yellow and black suit with a big red D on it, although he looks more like a pro-wrestling Wolverine in my opinion.

I kind of like how the cane on the cover is white, like a modern blind person's cane is. Though, honestly, I prefer Miller's retcon that Matt's first billy club was just a police officer's knight stick;'I can't help but wonder exactly how Matt got the materials to make his first one. Am I the only one wondering why the guy Matt saved was blind? That seems like a weird form of irony to me. And shouldn't the old man have been able to hear the truck coming, maybe get out of the way to make Matt realize that blind Individuals can still perceive the world?

ok, here's a stupid question, if Daredevil is a superhero made to represent the blind, how can the blind read it? I'm not aware of any comics that are printed in Braille, and it would kind of be hard to see the artwork, if you're, you know, blind. Not trying to badmouth the blind here, but it is an interesting problem.

If anyone wants to pick up this and the other first like 20 issues of Daredevil, Marvel just released the first Daredevil epic collection, just thought I'd make people aware just in case anyone wanted to check this issue out, among the others that came after.

I've loved Daredevil ever since I saw him in those episodes of the 90's Spider-man cartoon. It's interesting to see how much the origin has changed since his first appearance, especially since I often hear the story that the Kingpin killed his father, which I personally think works better, as it adds a bit more of a connection between the two rivals. I'll also just straight up say that his original costume is just TERRIBLE, in my opinion. It has the acrobat look going, I'll grant it that, but nothing about it screams DEVIL, like the red costume does. Btw, if the Netflix series gets any sort of DVD release, BUY IT. It's awesome, and I seriously binge watched the whole season in 2 days.

I hope the Lennon specs stay around for whenever you need to play as Matt Murdock like you do with Batman and the Batman mask.

What sense he supposedly used to see the flagpole? I don’t think blind hero characters really work. Toph in Avatar all the time is blocking flying objects which should not be possible, she doesn’t have better hearing either, she needs objects to be on ground.

Not to sound disrespecting but old Daredevil looks kinda silly because of the yellow. It might've made more sense but for someone called DareDEVIL and one where his costume got horns for some reason you expect him to have more of a devil motif and go in all red.
