Darius Milhaud (4 September 1892 - 22 June 1974) was a French composer, conductor, and teacher. He was a member of Les Six-also known as The Group of Six-and one of the most prolific composers of the 20th century. His compositions are influenced by jazz and Brazilian music and make extensive use of polytonality. Milhaud is considered one of the key modernist composers.

Quatuor Parisii
Description by Joseph Stevenson
This early string quartet (Milhaud went on to write a total of eighteen works in the genre) is a fairly self-assured work, though this impression might stem from a later revision in which the composer dropped the original third movement of what started out as a four-movement work. Milhaud's problem was prolixity: the quartet was full of melodic ideas, and in a third revision Milhaud considerably tightened the work by cutting it. The music shows some knowledge of the rhythmic innovations of Igor Stravinsky.
