The world is such that we are very familiar with many well-renowned but relatively unimportant figures who have done little with their lives, yet at the same time ignorant of great artists who have enriched us.
This composer was only a name to me until now. Is it all this good? The idea behind the play is fascinating and this music really delivers both on that level and definitely as a work on its own. I get the Prokofiev influence but I also get a strong DSCH Sym.9 vibe. The whole thing is fresh, inventive and beautifully scored. Thanks J-M!
Hetman Ivan Mazepa (1639-1709) - leader of Cossack Ukraine (1687-1709), His rivalry with Pedro the Great gave him fame in Europe. He was depicted as a hero in numerous works of art. Lord Byron, Victor Hugo and Juliusz Slowacki wrote poems about Mazepa, and Piotr Tchaikovsky and Franz Liszt dedicated musical works to him. However, in the 19th century, their success as the creators of a semi-independent state in the early modern period made them an inspiration for Ukrainian national sentiment.
If I were to perform either this or the B-minor concerto with orchestra, my first order of business would be to consult with the conductor in regard to shortening the over-long orchestral introductions (In this A-minor work, it's nearly four minutes in length!). No, I wouldn't consider doing this in concertos by Brahms, Beethoven, Mozart, and a few others, but somehow, to me at least, the "double expositions" in these Hummel concertos (and in the two by Chopin, for that matter) have always seemed self-consciously and uncomfortably over-extended.
Hi, I have listened to all your great uploads of Philipp. Do you by any chance know whether anyone has ever recorded (even an amateurish recording from a concert hall) his 3 symphonies? Is it possible no one has ever performed them?
This is gripping stuff; two comments to share 1. His insistence on pure arpeggios and scale passagework shows where Chopin advanced piano writing 2. My ear hears the might of Mozart's glorious c minor piano concerto K491, emerging in this !st movement. I wholeheartedly endorse the move away from the overplayed yawns to this fresh and innovative delight
This pice was heavily cut and placed into Pyotr Gusev's 1970s rendition of Adam's ballet le Corsaire! Was so surprised to hear the chopped up bits show up! Check it out yourself! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JldIlAPUn7A.html
