This series is where I analyze the family-friendly games of Nintendo’s legacy that tend to “push the envelope” and portray more mature themes than one would expect. Donkey Kong Country exemplifies this in music and atmosphere more than anyone would ever expect, so it's very deserving in coverage for this video. There's also some... pretty nightmarish aspects about it too- but this is only the beginning as there's two more DKC games to analyze in upcoming videos!

I would say the 2nd game is probably the darkest. Well mostly due to atmosphere. You are basically on K. Rool's island for the entire game and the true final world The Lost World is set inside the island itself and contains the island's core which is presumably in a decorated ceremonial hall of treasure which I am only guessing is K. Rool's throne room. Because this is K. Rool's world pretty much you just got more menacing areas. Decks of wrecked ships, flooded ship holds, ship masts, volcanic caverns, mine shafts, toxic swamps, thorn fields, wasp hives, deadly carnivals, spooky forests, a haunted house, frozen caverns, dank castle dungeons, and forbidden jungles. I am already excited for part 2 and part 1 is still pretty recent.

So to sum it up just think about a Mario game but the entire world the game was set in a world belonging to Bowser. That is basically Donkey Kong Country 2 as it takes place in a world that belongs to K. Rool.

Jmario232 Jmario232 I agree with you 100%- the first game is worth discussing in these terms but the second steps them up significantly. I've already finished the script for part 2 so you won't have to wait that long- I brought up the points you mentioned (believe I phrased it as the game taking place entirely on enemy territory) and understand the direness of Diddy's situation comparatively. Also, the third game might surprise you in terms of these dark aspects: I have lots to say about it too even though on the surface it may seem the weakest :)

Jmario232 reading this follow-up comment too makes me so glad Diddy's Kong Quest went the direction it did- Mario's platformers never went that route, with only final worlds (like Valley of Bowser as I mentioned in the video) and the infiltrating of his Castle (though even in many cases then, it's still a simple take over of the Mushroom Kingdom and renaming Peach's Castle). I want a Mario game in this vein, it'd be really neat to see the "birthplace" of Koopas and have an entire game themed around that like Krocodile Isle to the Kremlings.

Don’t forget the military theme, like the Klumps and Krushas wearing soldier clothes and K.Rook being referred as Kommander.

The game over screen its the most dark aspect of this game
@socialmedianotfunanymore

I felt part 2 was the darkest game over screen, only because you're left with wondering if Diddy and Trixie were in a jail or an oven(due to the screen turning red). Either way, it presents a possible death take for our heroes.

That Game Over screen terrified me as a kid and while I can look at it fine now days, I can't help but flinch a little whenever I suddenly see it appear on a RU-vid video..... and if you couldn't guess already, yes I did flinch when you showed it in this video. Lol From the depressing music to the in your face imagery of Donkey Kong and especially Diddy Kong being beaten up, not only this screen scared me as a kid, but I felt so sorry for them both because I couldn't help but feel guilty for their fate. Like "hey, YOU did this to them. It's all your fault!" Personally, this was my very first "Jump Scare" experience in video games and while there's no loud scream or yell in it, it was indeed very sudden and unexpected. From that point on as I gained more experience playing Donkey Kong Country, I never had that dreaded Game Over screen appear whenever I played through the game again. I no longer wanted to feel that trauma and guilt for the Kongs.

That Game Over screen was terrifying back then. Now though not so much. Heck there is one thing that's funny and that's DK's swollen man boob. XD
@ThaneGaming
@ThaneGaming 7 лет назад
Jmario232 hah! I can agree with that, it certainly was creepier back then but I simply had to mention it. As a concept it's still significant, and the music makes it serious: but yeah man-boob grounds it back in the realm of silly 😅

who knew a game about monkeys trying to get bananas from a reptile would be so atmospheric?

thane described pretty well at the end that the second game is more dark on the outside, while this game is more dark the better you look into it.

Bagel Penguin64 good way of putting it, that’s very true! In covering the trilogy of games I initially thought it’d be rough trying to find things to talk about for the first game, but the more I looked at it the more I realized how that wouldn’t be the case. DKC2 is definitely the one remembered for its brooding elements (for good reason) but the original should not be dismissed 😁

They should remake the DKC trilogy with the original pre rendered graphics. That would be SO amazing !

Rareware really knew how to make games full of both silly colorfulness and dark, gloomy moodiness. Such a contrast of themes in all their games.

Thane gaming what is your favorite donkey kong country game :-)

My favorite DKC game is the third, Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! Unpopular opinion (and this is saying a lot, as I really love the first two) but they went a really interesting direction with this one. I love the pipe levels, the focus on pollution- the terrifying underwater stages/music and the unforgettable "gimmicks" each level provides (Lightning Lookout? Tearaway Toboggan? I'll never forget them). The atmosphere retains that depth the series is known for, and emphasizes uncomfortability to make a game unlike anything else I've played.

The kid In red yes it's been too long: I've been away at college & trying to focus on mental wellness but decided this is ultimately what I want to do and where I want my time spent. Now that the semester's over I'm taking the time to figure out how I can manage outside of RU-vid- my dream is to do this full time so I won't let anything keep me off the site for that long again. Thank you for the concern I'm happy to be back!

I don't know why, but the Rock Croc enemies are more menacing in-game than in concept art.

This game is really good but last world, world 6, Chimp Caverns disappointed me. First world was Jungle, 2nd mines, 3rd forest, 4th ice and snow, 5th factory. And then 6th world. More mines? Like really? Why couldn't the last world be lava themed or something?

SparktheYoshi ahh I did see your Tweet! I meant to respond and thought I had (I believe I began typing a response and something kept from sending at that moment) but everything is okay. I greatly appreciate your checking up on me- thank you very very much and I know I have people like you willing to talk if needed. All this hiatus was had to do with my being away for college and trying to focus on mental wellness- I had a bit of a rough patch but I'm doing fine now and wish to work on RU-vid solely for a long while. I won't let anything keep me gone nearly as long in the future and if anything comes up I'll let you know- I'm sorry there wasn't a follow-up video either!

You've kind of inspired me actually...I want to do a Dark Aspects on The Binding of Isaac as it's one of my favorite games but is also so incredibly fucked up on so many levels to even begin to think about. God...where do I start...

SparktheYoshi hah yeah that'd be a long video! That's great it's your favorite, I've seen a lot about it and have played lightly with my brother but really need to give it a more focused run through. The idea & themes are really interesting and appealing to me- good luck if you decide to tackle it :) you already have footage so that's a start!
