The hurdy gurdy must have been a masterpiece of medieval engineering. I can imagine them taking the same care of an instrument like this as we would a priceless guitar, or set of drums.

You'd be surprised to hear that after a brief period of popularity with rich folk for being a masterpiece of engineering, I read somewhere that these instruments had a bad reputation because homeless prostitutes would often play them for cash because they were easy to learn.

The fell shadows swaying, the wind shifting the pines. The lone wolf and it's crying. Still our hero marches on. Freezing fingers that no gauntlets could keep warm from winter's cold biting maw. He keeps on carrying what little he has to keep him warm: the fire inside & strength of his limbs are all that remain to move the metal, the weight of war, the cold, hard steel of a knight's attire. A warning from one "want to play a Hurdy Hurdy" to another. They are absurdly expensive and the makers are very rare. But I hope that you find one that is perfect for you.
@FitZhurdygurdy
@FitZhurdygurdy Год назад
@@sootamander4398 Advice from one Hurdy Gurdy player to any aspiring ones: They are actually very fairly priced for the amount of work and labor that goes into them. Most HG makers work for a slave wage and do it for the love of the instrument. You can get a good starter model for as little as €800 these days, but you must practice caution to not be taken in by the many scams on Etsy and eBay. The most expensive ones may reach €10-15,000 or nore but a violin or piano of comparable quality would cost multiples of that. All things considered, the Gurdy is not "absurdly expensive" at all.

@@FitZhurdygurdy the only truly trustworthy people that I found are altar wind. If you know of any others I would love to hear about it. Thank you for the advice.
@FitZhurdygurdy
@FitZhurdygurdy Год назад
@@sootamander4398 I can assure you Altarwind are not that. They make very poor quality Gurdies and the price is shocking, you can get a far better instrument for half the cost of most of their models. George and Anwyn are lovely people but their Gurdies are very roughly thrown together and they refuse any advice on improving them. They will use bits of drawer handle as cranks, interior parts may be duct-taped in place, the keybox construction makes it difficult to play fluidly, the materials and woodworking are not instrument-gradeand they have a knack for claiming to be the inventors of several features that have been in existence since the 18th century. Much better options would be Dakota Strings (US based, new to the scene), and a plethora of European makers like Kerboeuf, Boudet, Chris & Bi Allen, Pouzadoux, MM Instruments, Nerdy Gurdy to name but a few. All of these makers have quality instruments available for between $800 and $3000 and you will be guaranteed something that will work properly and last a lifetime.

As a trumpet and piano player I think they are switching the direction to separate the notes. With a trumpet, you can do it by using your tongue to stop the air, then pulling your tongue back in, with a tap-like motion. On piano since all the keys are already separate you just press them at different times. In musical terms, if you didn’t separate the notes, then you would be slurring them all together.

This song made me envision a lone soldier at the end of a long arduous battle seeking his comrades that he knew not if they were going to meet him safely.

I made some lyrics, hope y’all like them! There was a king Come from a distant land He formed the earth Using his mighty hands He was a warrior Feared not beast nor devil He stood above all Who heard the ravens call There was a king Borne from the blood of gods He fought for man And ary noble cause He was a warrior Feared not beast nor devil He stood above all Who heard the ravens call He was a warrior He was a ruler He fought for justice And ary noble cause He bore much power None could devour This shining warrior Who wore the blood of gods He was a warrior Feared not beast nor devil He stood above all Who heard the ravens call He who stood above all Within the ravens call Was destined to fall To neither devil beast nor man He who stood above all Within the ravens call Was destined to fall To the might of godly hands There was a god Who’s anger seethed in flame His fury spawned At mention of the kings name He burned in hatred His honor stained and faded He wanted all Who heard the ravens call He faced the king In battle cruel and cold It mirrored those Wars seen in years of olde They both were warriors Who feared not beast nor devil They stood above all Who heard the ravens call And in this battle The world unraveled Cleaved in twain Marked with godly blood and pain The earth they ravaged In battle savage They could not foresee What chaos came to be These mighty warriors Who feared not beast nor devil Had destroyed all Who heard the ravens call Once the battle was done Neither warrior had won Instead they looked upon The destruction they had wrought They saw that their conflict Was the cause for all this They had ruined all All who heard the ravens call
