I'm a violinist and have played in a number of orchestras. I would've died if I got to perform there. I totally get that trombone player, he must've been stocked beyond belief.
I've worked backstage on over a dozen of these metal band + orchestra shows and trust me, you are not alone in feeling like that. No matter the age or instrument, most of these musicians loved the experience, be it because they could play in front of THAT many people, or because they could play something not moviescore or classical or for the vast majority because they just fucking love Metal and especially this kind of metal marries with orchestra so goddamn well. It's epic for everyone involved. Even for the massive amount of tech people working behind the scenes trying to keep everything going. Don't know the exact onstage headcount at the Wacken show, but for the shows they used for the DVD, there were 90+ people on stage and at least as much working backstage doing tech. In terms of tech alone, this is a hell of an undertaking.
I've always wondered if the orchestras/choirs in metal/classic crossover stuff are bored and there just for the salary (the orchestral stuff sounds quite basic stuff and not much of a challenge), or are they getting a kick of the show? Some column A some B I guess.
@@jerekahanpaa6458 Probably both, my grandma was an orchestra violinist her whole life, she probably would've thought it's a bunch of noise lol. But she's 90 years old so not a big metal fan
Having seen Dimmu live myself all I can say is it's not a show. It's an experience. They are absolutely phenomenal, especially live and even more so in person.
@@ThomFoolery1 loved your reaction. When I first heard Dimmu Borgir, almost 24 years ago, I had the same energy flowing! Nowadays this song still accelerates my heartbeat till high heights! In 1985 I started to listen to metal and in 1987 I discovered my love for the more darker side of metal. Venom, Celtic Frost etc
To me this is the best black metal song ever. This song is continuously changing and changing and changing is like 10 song in 1. The first time i see live Dimmu borgir was in 1997 and I can't forget how I was impressed. Unbelievable. Best black metal band ever.
That thing was one of the songs that helped me in my darkest time 15 years ago. I went to bed with the Enthroned album on my ears and usually woke up in the "morning" palace. Now i always get good moods when hearing it.
I am really glad you decided to react to Dimmu Borgir. I have never been a fan of black metal but I really gave a try to many bands long time ago (20 years ago...lol) and only DB cought my attention. Actually I really liked some of their songs. I don't recall the name of the songs... I remember only one - Reptile. Somehow they sounded much more melodic than other black metal bands. So I would really like to see more reactions of them and I am glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed this! I know what you mean, I've always been half aware of black metal but never really got into it. I added melodic/symphonic elements of this band are so appealing. Will likely revisit them again. :)
Dudette, Reptile fucking rules! That entire album rules, so many goodies on it! Spiritual Black Dimensions and Entrone Darkness Triumphant. I always listen to those when I feel down or wanna get psyched :D
Oh, I loved that! Your reaction was exactly like mine, wenn I by chance got my 1st ever introduction to Black metal back in 1998 with this very Song! Me, at that time being an innocent goth girl with no love for heavy guitars or screams... And Mourning Palace still gets me every time. I cannot summarize the feelings I have for all the atmosphere, composition, just the whole piece. I just take it all in every I am fortunate enough to hear it. Last Dimmu Borgir concert I've been at was in january 2020. I went with a friend and former classmate... she got a bit concerned about me doing the windmill thingy all the time. Thank you for making me happy today 🥰 and, yes, there have been some great suggestions for more Dimmu Borgir Songs in these comments here. Follow them 💞🤘
Thank you Simone! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Thats awesome that you have these experiences with the band, I can definitely relate with other bands I was introduced to at an earlier age - they stay with you for a long time. See you in the next one. Cheers. :)
Dimmu Borgir has skyrocketed to one of my top bands of all time. They fit exactly what I look for in metal. the orchestra is absolutely fantastic and the musicianship is godlike. Other tracks you have to check out which will leave you just as speechless as this are definitely In Death’s Embrace, which is in my opinion and many other’s opinion an even better track than Mourning Palace. It has an insane orchestra and a godly guitar solo to match. another song with musicianship just as superb is The Insight and The Catharsis. Totally jaw dropping tracks.
Kings of the carnival creation and puritania sounds amazing with orchestra, you should check those songs too!!

Pure powerhouse... Best Symphonic black metal ever... Shagrath, one of the best vocalist in the world.. And this song 'Mourning Palace ' best song.. Everything there was super duper boom 💥
KINGS OF THE CARNIVAL CREATION Same concert, I'm sure you'll love it, 100% guaranteed!! Thanks for you amazing reactions, you've got really some passion for music!! lml
Try "The Insight and the Catharsis" from Dimmu Borgir. Probably their best song. I suggest the studio version (it has the best quality) but if you only react to live performances I suggest the one from Oslo or Wacken 2007
Yes definitely! The Insight and the Catharsis shows how awesome Dimmu really is. With Mustis on the piano, and Vortex's clean vocals, it's one of my favorite songs by Dimmu.
Your reaction was absolutely the same I had when I heard them in 1999. You should check out more songs from their earlier records such as For Al Tid & Stormblast. Beautiful albums.
🤘🤘doooooooooooooooooooooooooode 🤘🤘 frikken awesomeness 🤯🤘 I wanna go for a drink with the dude playing the trombone 🤣 he was having the best time ever 🤗. Now please don’t tell me they got a back catalogue of like 20 albums, cos I can’t handle all this new music 🤣🤯 and hey, anytime you wanna pause and rewind to the beginning is fine by me. And just cos it’s nearly New Year, here in reverse order are my 3 fave of your reactions. In 3rd, this one cos you nearly leapt out your chair, in 2nd Nightwish - High Hopes, cos you did leap out your chair, and in 1st place Wintersun, Sons of Winter and Stars, cos your facial expressions were spectacular. HAPPY NEW YEAR dude 🤘🎶🤘 Metal Rules
Jeff, you are too kind good sir, I really appreciate the support. Haha yes the Trombone guy is amazing 😂 Thanks for giving the top 3, that's a good pick I'd say. I was thinking of making my own top 5 so far or something and I think High Hopes would be right up there. Wintersun is also up there with some of the best music I've ever heard. Definitely a lot of new music to take on and process but I'm loving the journey. Thanks again dude and happy new year to you too. 😀🤘
Dimmu borgir hasnt been what it used to be with ICS Vortex, their previous bassist who also did clean vocals, godly voice. I hope you check out some Wacken 2007 live videos from them. Songs i recommend Progenies of the great apocalypse, Kings of the carnival creation and The insight and the catharsis.
Thomas, you just heard the song that made me a Dimmu Borgir fan for life about 15 years ago. I heard a few of their songs before hand, mainly from Sampler discs, but once I heard Mourning Palace, and all of its time changes and whatnot, I was like, this band is the Shit! I was never into Black Metal, persay, but Dimmu's compositions (despite the criticism they get from other Black Metal fans) are what allow me to tolerate the black metal vocal style and driving guitars.
Hello there my good Sir! I've been checking you out for quite some time, great reaction as always... But when I see someone react and like Dimmu, I subscribe! Check out Progenies of the Great Apocalypse, Gateways, both from the Live Forces of the Northern light tour.
You have good observations regarding where this type of setting can take your mind to, but you've only scratched the surface my friend. If you have imagination and vision, there are bands that can take your imagination and vision to insane levels.
Please do a review of “Progenies of The Great Apocalypse” at Wacken 2007 with ICS Vortex singing and playing bass with Mustis on keyboards. Neither is in the group anymore, but they really added a lot to the group.
I suggest you check out "Winter Thrice" by Borknagar. The song has an amazing lineup of 4 magnificent vocalists (one of which is the former Dimmu Borgir bassist and clean vocalist ICS Vortex). It has a nice mix of painting beautiful melodic landscapes and sheer brutality. A real masterpiece.
"PROGENIES OF THE GREAT APOCALYPSE" (the official non-live video) is an awesome experience you won't ever forget. It seems it was something directed by a mix of Tim Burton, Zack Snyder, Quentin Tarantino and a pissed-off Batman. Trust me.
If you enjoyed this, maybe you could try out some of the newer Shade Empire if you get a chance and haven't done so already? Songs like "Ruins" and "Anti-Life Saviour" fall well into this epic, symphonic black metal sound.
Their first two albums, For all Tid and Stormblast, are the best melodic black metal albums of all time. It was before they changed their style to more mainstream black metal. Of course their later albums are still great but none catch the magic of those first two. They'll always have a special place in my heart
Also i highly recommend The insight of Catharsis Live in Wacken 2007. That live version is better then studio or any other live version years after. Mr. Vortex shines in it. I really hope you will react to it. 😌
I'd love to see your reaction to Henker - Mental Corruption. The song is 125bpm and the outro the drummer plays quad bass for 1/64th notes for 2000bpm quad bass - The fastest bass recorded.
Great reaction Thomas! I'm pretty sure the guy rocking in the orchestra is a trombone player, but not important 😂. Not my favorite band, but I think they have a few golden ones. This is my favorite of them ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xlD5zePSzdQ.html
"Im sorry guys I wanna hear that again" - or the real reason - "Im sorry guys I will now pause and rewind abit just to avoid copyright strikes and get my ad revenue" I mean common, better to be honest :)
Haha I wish it was that easy! 😂Ad revenue goes to the record label even if you play a few seconds so I make no money for any reactions. I really did want to just hear it again! 🤘
Hearing you say "they pioneered black metal" really hurt. They are not considered real black metal in Norway. They get recognition for promoting metal tho.
