"Whether consciously or not, a wooden-boat builder taps into the essence of nature, relying on its inherent order to shape a truly exquisite creation. In reality, it is the fundamental harmony and reflection of the natural world that makes the boat so fascinating." - Lawrence W. Cheek
There's something enchanting about wooden boats. Every moment spent on them, from the pleasant scent of freshly planed wood to the gentle sway of the water, evokes pure bliss. However, the allure comes with a great deal of effort. Wooden boats require constant upkeep and meticulous maintenance to avoid falling into disrepair.
In this video series, we will delve into the art of restoring wooden boats. We'll cover topics such as selecting the perfect vessel, evaluating it for restoration, executing hull repairs and enhancements, revitalizing clinker and carvel boats, and applying the final touches with varnish and sealant. Along the way, we'll offer practical advice for working with wood. Whether you're an experienced sailor or just starting your boating journey, come and join me in exploring the world of wooden boat restoration through the Sarah Ann restoration project.

Hi Chris, I remember when I was at the Australian Martin College some 40 years ago we where told not to eat the oysters because of Bell bay and other things. I did open one and found a very small Pearl in one and for the the last 30 years I can not find it at home. And I wanted to go out on there sailing yachts but there said we could not because there didn’t have anything or any one to keep an eye on as. So I glad I am watching you going to the places I could not.

So where is home for you now? Are you still Captaining? I took the oyster parts out of the video. I’m thinking my fingernails will stop glowing in the dark before long.

Nicely done again Chris. Great ad for tasy! I noticed your mast raising technique looked a little awkward, thought you were going to fall down hatch at one stage. On the Careel 18s we stand over the mast on the cabin top and lift it between our legs while walking back. Maybe worth a try. Stay safe and good sailing..😊
@SmallSailboatCruising
@SmallSailboatCruising 8 месяцев назад
Thanks 👍 But it is too heavy to lift from that position.. 2 person job ideally. It felt pretty soli from where I was, but there is a moment or two until it gets to the point where the forestay line through the bow roller will hold it. I'm working on my technique.

Threw my youth my family did the rounds of relatives from both sides of the family one of them lived at hill-wood I spent days swarming below there house at high tide you could swim to and dive off large boulders, at low tide the said boulders sat hi and dry , I believe they were around 18 ft high , the serge from passing ships was a challenge and I have the oyster scares to remind me every time we went there a regular feast was had dad would would make a oyster cream curry Mornay , unfortunately once the reads infested the tamer mud built up and with it bacteria, a problem for the oysters . It was claimed that ablest water introduced the Japanese oysters and later the reads . My uncle collected buckets of oysters from wire they were first found and dumped them at hill wood as did lots of others at the time

It was lovely to read through your personal history. It helps me connect the dots. I appreciated your explanation of the oyster problem. I hadn’t made the connection with the rice grass.

Interesting your comparison to QLD. I lived in the Whitsundays from ‘07 to ‘11. Thoroughly enjoyed the cruising and racing around the islands. We now sail the Gippsland Lakes in Victoria. It’s not the Whitsundays but I get as much enjoyment now as I did then. Magic down here. No crocs, stingers nor putrid heat. I bet you are experiencing similar. Ian

Nice trip mate. I must confess that while watching I didn't have my hearing aids in and therefore missed the Audible part about thst creature by the ram p was it a Serpent or a mammal
@SmallSailboatCruising
@SmallSailboatCruising 8 месяцев назад
It’s a native mammal called a Rakalis. Mistakenly thought to be a rat by early Europeans.

Very nice area to sail in, why motoring, too little wind?
@SmallSailboatCruising
@SmallSailboatCruising 8 месяцев назад
I missed the opportunity early when the wind was up. After that there was only light and variable winds. But to be honest I was struggling after a very rough week with a very sick wife. I didn’t have much zip and needed time to rest and recover.

How do wooden boats cope with tropical waters?
@SmallSailboatCruising
@SmallSailboatCruising 8 месяцев назад
Great question. The short answer is thousands do. Certain Timbers are better suited than others. Antifouling mist be maintained. My friend had a dynel sheathed wooden hull. It performs like fibreglass.
@timphillips9954
@timphillips9954 8 месяцев назад
@@SmallSailboatCruising Yeah I live in Thailand and most of the fishing boats are made of timber and they seem to do okay.
@SmallSailboatCruising

They have a lifespan. Seems 100 is a good innings. Fibreglass might last longer. Time will tell.
