A live synthesizer jam performed entirely on hardware.
This is the fourth track I've made specifically for the Push 3, and the first where I've used Ableton Live to make the entirety of the song. Some of Live 12's new features, like the generative sequencer tools, can be a fun way to get quickly inspired. I still miss many aspects of Reason when working in Live, but it's fun to change things up.
Kudos to the amazing Novation AFX Station. This synth has a fantastic panel, is a great size (not too big, not too small), two levels of drive/distortion, two filter options, great either clean or gritty, excellent resonance on the filter, etc. The more I use it, the more I love it. It's been around for 11 years, and there are more expensive mono synths, but I'd reach for this one before most for something dark and interesting.
I'm either 40 or 50 percent through this particular album/set and really happy with the music so far. The Push 3 really allows me to create songs in a way that no other setup has allowed. And while there are many features I wish it had (especially more on the side of performance), I'm finding myself happier and happier thinking of it as my live-set device. Can't wait to take these songs on the road.
Ableton Push 3 - most sounds, effects, and performance
Novation AFX Station - mono synth melody/lead thing
Performed and recorded live, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.

Once again, you blow my mind. As someone who uses a lot of old analogue gear this makes me jealous to watch the process… I have much to learn.

How you place written commentary makes your videos stylistically cool and unique, but also concise 👏👏👏

Love the groove of the bass and drums on this one. Also, album title idea…Dark: Music for a productive day of dancing. 🙃

The vibe is alive, As day takes the place of night, The groove to move in full-on swing, I hear the birds upon their wings, As music lifts us from within, I stretch and dance and feel at peace, The vibe in life is what we bring, As music helps to lift all spirits, It’s filled with love, I feel and hear it.

This is really good...kind of evocative of funkier The Smile/Atoms For Peace stuff...reminds me a bit if Sababa 5 too..that bass vst is so authentic...who needs to spend a fortune on a vintage bass...and the drums are really tight and retro 😊

Nice track 🤩 Till now, your set with the Push 3 is very consistent! Live it will be a treat! 🔥 (could probably also be played with a live band: drums, bass etc.? 😅)

I would love to put it on with bass and drums, yeah! But one thing at a time. I'll start with the Push 3 first. And thanks!

My gosh! You were one of the people that got me interested in learning more about synths with amazing jams just like this one! You have a map and you’re going on a journey with it, love how it never sticks in one loop or progression. It also just feels like you’ll make music with whatever you have on the table which is such a great thing different from videos where people suggest to get just one piece of gear to change your life haha. Anyway, now that I’m into modular and making stuff of my own, I try to have some different places to go in a jam. This jam however reminds me that I can still spend some more time and craft it and explore a bit more of the map. Something I’m always interested in is, is this jam something you have sort of composed in your mind ahead of time, all the different parts kinda thing or do you set up some places to go and then do a jam and see where it ends up?

Some songs are truly improvisational, many (most) have some basic structure and a lot of improvisational elements on top, and some are more structured still with some concrete ideas on how to perform it. This one (and this series of tracks with the Push 3) falls into the latter category. But exploring all the different ways to make music is the most fun. And thanks so much!

@@JayHosking That’s cool to hear that there is a range. I think that’s definitely something interesting about music technology. It can often push or pull us in different directions and offer up different opportunities or roadblocks which inherently can be whole new workflows. At the moment, I think I mostly follow where my interests are and try to match things to the way I think about music and playing it in this very different electronic context (originally a guitar player and drummer in a punk rock band). Would you say it’s beneficial to follow your heart so to speak in those respects or would you more suggest really sticking to a piece of gear and learning it through even if you’re not getting along? I guess context is, I’m loving modular and picked up a model:samples for a bit of fun and to play with the kids. Pipe dream of starting up a synth library to put some gear in kids hands where I’m at also.

@@turbotambourine I would say it's most beneficial to not have too many preconceived notions of what your music has to say about you, or what music you're going to make when you sit down. It's just fun to sit down and let the music come out how it will. One instrument or many doesn't matter; but fun and flow and process matter. I tend to choose instruments that emphasize that process. All the best!
@turbotambourine

@@JayHosking Smart! That’s definitely how I feel sitting in front of my case. I don’t have to know all the modules perfect or know all the techniques but the music comes out regardless - different every time. It’s perfect for me! Thanks for the advice!

Hey bud. Are your drum sounds in this loops or are they samples sequenced in Ableton?
@JayHosking
@JayHosking 22 дня назад
Drums on the P3s are loops, but they were created via a multi-sample plug-in that also does its own sequencing, called Tympo by Teletone Audio.
