*Postscript:* I made this video for the person who is suffering. I can’t speak about The Dark Night of The Soul and not feel the loss of my friend who didn’t survive his mental health crisis, or the multitudes of frightened people who reach out to me during the worst moments of their lives - we need better support, and that's what I'm here to offer. In truth, this was an emotionally taxing video for me to plan and shoot. I've experienced several waves of anger and grief these last few days (and it shows in my camera presence), but I nonetheless wanted to provide a clear, concise and structured path for your self-healing. I’ve done my best to curate what I believe to be an accessible yet comprehensive study guide for anybody who is struggling through this very difficult period of time. These teachers hold more wisdom and guidance than anybody on RU-vid, and they are all worth your attention. It’s taken me five years to find these nine books in the pinned comment. *Please stop scrolling the comments and purchase the books.* You'll get through this, but you have to study. Jordan

My brother just took his life only 2 weeks ago. He lost a long battle with his own demons and my sadness is beyond anything ive felt before. We had no real idea it was coming, although somewhere, deep inside me i had the fear. I have been in transition for going on 3 years now and this has given me enough of a foundation to not lose myself completely in grief and existential sadness. My heart aches for humanity as a whole and the pain people feel and is broken to pieces for my brother. Thank you for this timely (for me) information as I continue my journey to true emotional health and some kind of enlightenment...that's the goal anyway!!

When going through my first Dark night 12 years ago I had nobody to talk to, no resources, nothing that could help me. I have no idea how I pushed through that. I am so glad that now people going through it will have resources like this video and won't have to do it on their own. I feel like following your example I could someday contribute to others' lives in that way as well. But for now, I am just thankfully enjoying your content. I agree so much with your points about grounding yourself into reality. Making lengthy physical contact with Earth's dirt, mud, natural bodies of water, and plants is very useful. This practice strengthens my sense of not being identical with my negative emotional experiences and helps me to know, and feel, myself as an observer, experiencer, and sculptor of them and as someone involved in the world again productively. Thank you for your excellent work.

Another excellent video. Great books...I have all but 2 in my collection. Love the clarity that Michael Washburn brings and the way he integrates East and West. Washburn breaks regression down into 2 phases, which I found enormously helpful. One layer is experienced as unresolved grief and trauma from this lifetime, the ego's karma if you will. This is symbolized by a lake or turbulent river and many other symbols. One no sooner finishes this level and there is a false reprieve that lasted around 1 week with me. Then, one gets some bliss, past life memories come up, the revelation that one is an evolving soul, and some light comes up. One thinks "great...I'm done...I've reached the other side!" Wrong. Then one finds oneself on the shore of a turbulent ocean. This is what Washburn calls "the Dark Night of the Spirit" or "regression in service of transcendence, phase 2". What dies is the false self sense complex (which is identified with shame, guilt, fear, rage etc) In all, it took me 22 years to "bottom out", land on solid ground, and swing upwards into "Regeneration in Spirit". Here, the authentic ego is fully integrated with the Soul Core..or Divine center..or Self. The higher energies are just as challenging as the lower hell like experiences. This phase begins to calm down and one becomes more and more integrated. You are absolutely right...working out, getting into the body, and staying focused on work and one's responsibilities is paramount. Trusting the process is essential. Heavy meals like Spaghetti and meatballs help enormously too! Sorry for long post.

Hey I don't know if you have a contact posted anywhere but I wanted to at least try to touch base here, both for you as well as Jordan himself. I am a huge fan of Michael Washburn's work in this area as well. I've even corresponded with him both during my "dark night" as it were, as well as on the back end of it. If Prof. Washburn (or as he would have it, "Mike") was open to it, would anyone else who has benefited so deeply from his work want to organize a trip to meet each other & even meet him? He lives in Indiana if I'm not mistaken. But it would mean so much to actually meet him, see his face, hear his voice, & share how much he meant to me (& perhaps others). Thanks, just throwing it out.

Hey Jordan , I can’t imagine your loss , but I do understand pain . Please do know that many stand with you 🙏 ‘Dark Night Early Dawn ‘ particularly called out to me. Till a few years ago I used to say this often ,that it’s only when I actually hit rock bottom , that I realised to my horror that rock bottom has multiple basement levels. I have not been able to read anything last few years , the last year being excruciatingly quiet. The lyrics ‘ silence like a cancer grows’ coming to my mind now. Meditation is still my only solace. Swamplands of the soul Dark night, early dawn ( both are in my Amazon cart) Love and Light Ps : thank you , as always 😊

Is it insanity? I feel like I’m going insane when I look at myself reflected back in the eyes of friends and family. Untethered lost and alone. I cried as I listened to you. My family hasn’t wanted to see me in over a year. So I know that it’s me. I’m defective. I’m trying to pull myself out but I’m stuck. I love life. I love this world. I’m not suicidal. I’m an INFJ and an empath. Now this. It’s all too heavy to carry alone. I’m spinning in circles digging deeper into a pit. I’m desperately searching for people who understand. 💙

I’m an INFJ and just like you, lost in my own inner world and an indescribable pain. I don’t know who I am nor who I will be or what I’m I supposed to do or what the point of being alive is. Everyone thinks I’m crazy bc I like to talk about deep subjects, I’m too “intense” and “weird” and I have multiple psychological diagnosis that I know are complete crap 😂 they want to put me on pills just because I was speaking facts and this people don’t like to hear it. Thought I was the only going through it. I feel attacked by family, friends and even “mental health professionals” and I’m being aggressive and protective of myself bc I feel misunderstood in all of this. Hope it gets better because I do have a lot of love to give ❤

I knew I was going through the the dark night of the soul instinctively when it happened. I tried to Google to find out more but didn’t come up with much. After I started coming out of it (through power walking) I had a friend kill himself. We were born on the same day and I’d known him for 45 years. I knew it was the dark night of his soul that killed him, and I said so to the crowd at his funeral (I’m a minister). I had no way to explain what it meant, so thank you for this topic and book recommendations. Losing the ego is extremely disorienting and uncomfortable. Everything changes. Stick with the discomfort, EXERCISE and the reward will be freedom, authenticity and fun! What? Yes, fun!

Jordan, I am very sorry for your loss. Life is a very complex journey, I believe with divine purpose. How fortunate ur to have the ability to focus enough to read copious amounts of books. Having been diagnosed with CPTSD, mild depression and anxiety this is something I have struggled with for years which is difficult as I am an avid booklover. For the past 3 years I have been navigating the "Dark Night of the Soul", what a fascinating process, I have never experienced such spiritual enlightenment, darkness, pain and suffering all at the same time. I am grateful for all content on utube concerning this and related topics, it has been a great way to delve into areas of interest whilst staying focused enough to allow the information to resonate on a deep level. Being an individual who suffers from memory loss, brain disassociation and cognitive dissonance this has been very helpful. Your perspective and coping mechanisms are very insightful. Thankyou for sharing your personal experiences, for me it really does help the world to feel a little less foreign.......

Thank you for sharing your stories, insights, and research. I can't wait to read Dark Night, Early Dawn and Embodied Spirituality. The first one is at my library. Dr. Nicole LePera (The Holistic Psychologist) talks about naming your ego to notice your true self versus the part that is trying to protect your identity in the world. It seems to make sense. I might be overdoing it, or going too fast. Always deeply moved to hear about suicides, and the surviving loved ones. A child can be thrust into that darkness, i know all too well the lure of death. I found many reasons to not kill myself. When i acquired 10, i thought i could write a pamphlet, then found 3 more. Staying alive happens beyond the realm of reason. Good to highlight the physical body

I’ve found there have been layers of ego death (mainly precipitated by my kundalini awakening). I’ve come to recognize aspects of when it is happening and do my best not to introduce resistance though it can be frightening and is sensorily disconcerting. I keep up with all my practises including grounding and trust it all to rearrange itself as it always seems to do. I don’t ascribe outwards to books and have tried to keep my experience really innocent. I panicked the first time and got some comfort from research, but my preferred m.o is definitely intuitive in nature and allowing the path to unfold. Thanks Jordan.

Thank you so much. Brilliant reading. And i'm sorry about your friend. Crushing!!! Death is sad enough, but it's the violence of suicide that obliterates us. I found great help in therapy. I'm old now, and glad to be old. It was over 20 years ago that i recognized i was having flashbacks. And the immediate subsequent recognition was: I've been having these all my life. Violent family, i had my midlife crisis when i was one. Actually i call them "flashblacks", because there's no visual. Rather it's kinesthetic, i described it as a black wind blowing through me. The absence of visual provides a clue as to the youngness of when the trauma occurred, before the brain can register visual memory. So painful to recognize i was hated by persons who claimed to love me. One takes that hatred in, as if it were my own. Unless that belief of self-hatred is dismantled, which takes time, help, and imagination, threat of suicide is everpresent. The feelings recur. Awful how feeling suicidal, i believed i was thinking rationally, like this is a great idea. Now i can say to myself "Whoa, i'm in the trance". That provides a shred of detachment, to patiently endure and detour from self destruction. I love your reading list! I have a friend struggling with suicidal feelings, the trance metaphor was helpful. She's unable to read, though. I suppose it takes some serenity to be able to read. There's a painfully great book on the topic, Night Falls Fast, rats i forget the author. But there is a pattern, where a sufferer, having lived in numb denial for so long, experiences a little bit of loving help. The result, like tearing a scab off an unhealed wound, is a renewal of despair, and the person at that point is at ever greater risk of suicide. My father🥀. This sounds like your friend, the gesture of reaching for the book, knowing help could be found. The pain became overwhelming, like hemorhaging. The demons don't like success. It's my belief that these poor tortured folks would not want us to feel responsible. Peace

Showing the body a better way of being by opening it up to feel fully again in the love and guidance of our life we give for it. The body as our ally and friend and a commitment to win it over and change it’s attitudes and disposition no matter what it’s been through or what kind of early life parenting it had. It really does start with grounding and re-mothering our body with nature so it can begin healing in feelings of security with us and away from all the ways bad mothering gave it the wrong messages of our worth and value.

Good job, Jordan! Yeeeears ago, when I was in my early 20's, I challenged myself to read/study the works of Allan Kardec. It's about spiritualism. Understanding the origin of my spiritual being, helped a lot when I was navigating my soul's dark nights. Discovered your channel only very recently (bless the algorithm!) & immediately subscribed as I sense I have much to learn here, if I dare. I don't typically comment but am making an effort today, not having even finished watching the video, as the timing is impeccable. Simply want to offer my thanks for your content. I'm also a bit raw and proceesing some big feels having just came out of a counselling session (have been doing IFS work for several months now) where I had the insight that perhaps the regression & suicidal ideation I have been experiencing lately may possibly (hopefully) have been the descent into darkness that I need in order to spiral upwards once again. I can also see how I could use this as an excuse to continue a downward spiral. My younger brother, after decades of struggling with opiate addiction, the recent loss of his partner to an OD & forced severance from their 11 year old autistic daughter since the OD (she's currently in the care of a relative), was seriously contemplating suicide yesterday. I felt/feel powerless to prevent his actions for better or for worse, and unable to provide any clarity for him to help him pull back from the edge. So I want to offer my condolences for the loss of your friend recognizing that clarity is often accompanied by great suffering. For a long time now I've had a lot of resistance to reading. Even when you urge us so clearly to actually just read I have all these judgements about how reading can just be intellectual bypassing, and how there's a greater value in what you're presenting that enables us not to have to read as much as you to glean the same benefits and insights. But I know deep down that the reason the prospect of reading properly again is triggering me is because I know how impactful it is and how much my avoidance of it is simply that there is a depth of work and subsequent transformation I'm afraid of.. that the point I'm at is like the regression described where I'm kind of skimming and fragmentedly engaging/evolving/practicing but not really committing to this work for fear of what it means for my ego, identity, typical ways of being and doing. Interested not committed as they say, and I hear your frustration with this because (what I'm hearing is) you know this is what saves lives. I know how significant certain texts and practices have been to me and that deep engagement with them is only possible through reading/notetaking/paraphrasing and following with journalling or practices. Yet I'm still at this sore point where I can't seem to truly commit to this work. I have compassion for the fact that I'm in a big life transition period and only starting to settle after a lot of change and upheaval, which in itself has (gladly) disrupted my life and all the strategies stories and stresses that stymied the transformation that's been banging in the doors of my coffin lid or cocoon walls, so to speak .. and that past ego tendencies towards masochistic or action-faking type regimentation (and intellectual /spiritual bypassing) disguised as self-improvement make it hard to find a sweet spot or balance. I was really glad you mentioned physical grounding because that piece of the puzzle precludes the possibility of heavy reading being a form of intellectual or spiritual bypassing. With compassion and acceptance I also acknowledge that I've had a lot of resistance to physical activity that priorly helped.. Likely again because in the past it veered into regimentation, ignoring the body and my feminine cycles and intuition around this, basically forcing it into certain routines, leading to metabolic shutdown. Anyway I hope my sharing this offers some insight to resistance and how we might say we're on a healing journey but feel stuck or perpetually flitting back into old patterns, albeit with awareness and compassion, and how - whether to reading or moving or whatever we know will help us - this resistance can be acknowledged, held, then ultimately redeployed. I say this too because I viscerally feel this resistance as similar - in heart-pang / gut-disgust vibe - to that general life and self-denial sensation in body that mind attempts to problem solve with its domino effect spiral into inertia, freeze, and suicidal thoughts. Sending strength and compassion to anyone else encountering regression or resistance 💖💪✨ and thank you again Jordan for urging us to commit to this work.. I have heard it loud and clear

Thank you kind sir for this channel and your recommendations of all these extraordinary books. I shall purchase what I can afford or procure what I can from the local library. It's time I committed a deep dive into Mr. Jung. Born into a chaotic hippie commune with a grip of unsavory characters practicing new age abuse and terror, I suspect I disowned my rage and my shadow is rather looming. Perhaps these books will assist me in deviating from the path of a wounded, curmudgeonly organism, who stumbles, writhes, and lurches (all the while gripping a copy of the Tao Te Ching ) and seeking tranquilizing elixirs, a quiet room, and horizontal position. Sadly, I just tore a ligament in my knee so I'll have to pass on the squats :( Fortunately the natural world, combined with a few reasonably evolved and genuinely benevolent allies has kept me in the game. Forgive me if that was a bit long winded. Thank you again! Perhaps you have read "Darkness Visible" by William Styron? I found that memoir of madness to be comforting during many a dark night...

Thank you so much for this video. I am going to start with the first books on your list. I’d love to get your feedback if you have some time. I realize this is a bit much, and perhaps too much for a brief RU-vid comment, but I figured you can let me know if that’s the case. So, basically as a result of my spiritual emergency two years ago, my entire self died and everything in me just collapsed, along with that came this part of me that is terrified of doing anything that will bring me back to life, afraid of eating, afraid of moving, going outside etc. any time I try to do anything like that something in me just collapses and I feel compelled to just curl up on the ground, and trying to do any of those things makes me feel like I’m inside out, like my energy is split, like I’m rebelling against myself. Because I completely lost my persona I cannot move about in the world anymore or interact with others, hence going outside is supremely difficult. I lost my general rhythm and ability to be ok in the moment, I’ve completely lost my grounding in this world. I’m curious since you mentioned you’ve worked with folks going through DNOTS if this is anything you’ve encountered before and if you’d have any recommendations? Thank you so so much.
@jordanthornton
@jordanthornton Год назад
You may not feel satisfied with my advice, but I suggest getting into the gym or yoga studio. Consistent and deep embodiment practice which solidifies your identity and lays the physical foundations for a new healthy ego - it will lower the energy and allow you to finally digest all your experiences. You'll feel very different in six months if you commit to working out 4x per week - weightlifting ideally, need to take on weight. Good luck, and I hope the books serve you.

Reading and studying depths of human psychology, tendencies, paterns and functions often can be dangerous i think, and i would really like to hear your thoughts on this topic. As someone understands his shadow and his fuctions its really dangerous for him to put those conclusions into his ego, and that can easily become a fragment to his development. As you discover more and more your brain-soul and your fuctions in depths that knowledge can easily go against you and sometimes even reach a schizophrenic battle and for sure many obsessions in the most cases. I have had many of those experiences and i understand that this has to do with an immaturity of some kind too. My question i suppose, (and i hope that i don't say just obvious things with no meaning because of my difficulty of English language), is how do you use psychology and philosophy of human consciousness as a knowledge and as a tool without going mad or obsessed with things, because i understand that it has a very small line that sepperates knowledge and practical use. I feel the need also to thank you with great honest for your work and give you real credits for that thing you are doing because its really hard to find real and useful information of that kind on the internet and your are honestly a gold mine. You've helped me understand many things and i would dare to say that you've opened my consciousness a bit more. Keep believing to what you 're doing i am sure i am not the only one.

Hi Jordan. So glad I found your channel, its been very helpful for my clarity and focus. I have a friend who I am trying to introduce to spirituality. What book do you recommend as a good introduction please? 🙂

I don’t know if you can ever ‘introduce somebody to spirituality’ with a book - very much feel like people will introduce themselves when they’re ready hahaha

For people who can't go to the gym because of chronic pain & CPTSD, fibromyalgia etc For titration purposes, I recommend Qigong. It's excellent for grounding & shifting through energies. Look up Yoqi on here - Marissa, she's lovely. Squatting exercises can induce trauma release, especially with your back against a wall in seated position. Shifting the flight/fight energy in the legs then it rises through up to the cervical spine. This advise comes from David Berceli. Part of the dark night of the soul is not being able to release these traumas from the body & subtle energy field. I've been working with a chiropractor & it's brought up past life trauma. Things that have affected me for years now make more sense. Although my chiropractor doesn't understand the past life aspect ofcourse.
