Dark Souls Remastered Review! Worth The Price? (PS4/Xbox One)

Played it on PC. Unfortunately I still agree with the line that Bamco should have kept the Prepare to Die edition on sale and released this as a mandatory patch. It really isn't an upgrade - it's a fix. Console versions make more sense. Still an awesome game if you haven't already got it.

Now we just need a Demon's Souls remaster. Then life would be complete

It's 2021 and people are still talking about Dark Souls. I don't think anyone is going to forget about this game any time soon.

I'm starting to wonder if people are confusing the term "remaster" with "remake". For a game a remaster is kinda like a movie going from originally on VHS or whatever and getting a digital clean up and HD upscale. Exact same movie...maybe added in some scenes cut out before and plop it onto a blu-ray...that's a remaster. A remake is basically just that...remaking the game from the ground up, i.e. filming the whole movie in a new way essentially known as a reboot.

Pretty sure Dark Souls director Hidetaka Miyazaki, said there were not gonna be anymore Dark Souls games.

Note, Dark souls Remastered does support 4K ultra resolution. All PS4 PRO'S support 4K function, the only Xbox that supports 4K is the Xbox One X, you'll also need a TV that functions 4K resolution. Compared to how dark souls was on the Xbox 360 back when it came out. The Remastered version is a saint compared to the old version. Blight town I think it's called, was a big problem with Lag and resolution spikes. Now it's smooth 60-73 FPS on my PS4 PRO at 4K while streaming live. I've never dropped below at least 57 FPS according to my software intel.

I got it at Walmart for 14.99 today. Not a bad price 😀

I'd love to see the King's Field games remade. I read somewhere that the Dark Souls games were the spiritual successors of the King's Field series. In fact, when I went back and played King's field IV on the PS2, some of the graphic assets looked like they were in some of the Souls games.

The people who say the original version was better is absolutely insane, the Remaster may have the same graphics (which are good even by todays standards still) but the FAR FAR better Framerate and much better servers (You can actually summon people properly!!) Alone makes the remaster absolutely shit all over the original. Theirs absolutely NOTHING the original has better then the Remaster, could they have done better? Hell yes they could of done a ton more to make it wayyyy better, but the constant 60 FPS and Much better servers (also on PVP much less phantom hits then in DS3 so the netcode is better in DS1 Remaster then 3 tbh) makes DS1 Remaster honestly stand as Prince in the souls series (Bloodborne is still the king)

This is a remaster by all means, why people confuse remasters with remakes?

Glad i bought it today, the game is so smooth now it feels like a new game, it rocks.

I never played the original dark souls because of what I heard about Blighttown. Nah I was good. But after hearing Blighttown was fixed I picked it up. It holds up amazing in 2018. The graphics arent state of the art but the frame rate is so good and the combat is so fun. I made it through Blighttown in half a day, it was rough but the frames kept up and now my character has a +3 raw halberd and I'm damn good with it. 9/10 for sure, its not as hard as Bloodborne

I think most people would of been widely more appreciated for this remaster if anyone who owned the original game would be automatically given the remastered for free, similar to Bethesda with Skyrim Special Edition. Now here's a few key notes about why this remaster is easily a much better game than the original, feel free to discuss these things with me. First off, this game has everything the original game had and greatly improved upon them, I won't talk about the graphics since the only thing that really changed was bonfires,armor and subtle effects. The main changes is the optimization, this game runs at a steady 60fps the whole game through (with minor stutters when loading new areas on older hardware) and even in BLIGHTTOWN! Yes Blighttown was fixed in the remaster, it's no longer frame rate hell, it's just toxic blow dart hell. Keyboard and Mouse players are going to be delighted with how easy it is in this game, unlike the other souls games. Dark Souls 2 for example, terrible controls and it had the stupid controller icons which made it difficult to learn in a already terrible port. and lets not forget about the modding community, everyone thought playing the original with 60fps,amazing graphical mods would be amazing even though the games engine couldn't handle it. With the remaster the games engine is better suited for a modding community, I can't wait to see how people create mods for this game to better enhance the graphics.

Looks cool, gonna wait for the Switch version though and yes, I'm still annoyed they delayed it, especially considering it looked pretty done at PAX but I guess they felt more optimisation needed to be done so if it just means a better experience in the end then I suppose I can live with it, regardless I'm looking forward to picking it up.

I do wish there was better matchmaking. Which is partially why I comment: is the matchmaking with this game better than Bloodbornes? That and I’m reluctant to buy this, but I love Bloodborne so much, that I’m basically looking for someone to tell me that I can’t go through life without playing this game, that it’s an absolute must. Only 23 deaths!?!? My first play through of dark souls took me about 40 hours and I stopped counting deaths once I got to the bell gargoyles lmao

I haven't forgotten...But that might be because I played this only a few months before DS 3 came out.

So sad that the Switch version was delayed. (I realize most of the graphics improvements won't apply to that version anyway, but I prefer playing games on my Switch, so I'll wait for that.)

The toughest enemy in an Soulsbourne game is the camera.

Backstabs being overpowered in DS1 is a feature, not a bug or glitch. Some like it, some don't, but if they had changed it, they'd have changed the PVE experience too much to please old fans.

I am very happy that the remaster is not a remake. The charm of the original is superior to whatever a remake would have entailed. I'm loving being able to revisit this game in 60FPS with a sharper look.

Have you played the PC version with DSfix?

First run throuhg DS1, never playing a "hard" game before. I died way more than I should have and NEVER finished it on the 360. Only PC did I finish it, with DSFIX before, which brings me to that, if you already own it on PC, just use DSfix unless you really want to give From Soft your money, like me, than go for it. All and all great game. Glad the multiplayer is top notch now.

Very happy they offered this to the newer consoles. The price is a bit steep for how much is put in i think though. In the end ill probably still get it because i am weak ans cant help myself.

Lets be honest....were all waiting for that portable switch version. People who bust nut over the game already own it on pc with an asshat load of mods to make it purdy and they did little on this one outside of the 2018 mandatory. That portable version will be the real game changer.

I prefer pc old version with dsfix... They made it more easier and streamlined. The 360 copy i even still like besides fps drops but ds1 was special they retooled core gameplay to much for my tastes.

The first game I played by these guys was Bloodborne recently as it was a plus game I tried it and instantly fell in love, I'm considering trying this but the reason I liked Bloodborne instantly was the gothic victorian thing going on, I love horror also but I'm not digging the night in shining armour look tbh if Dark Souls so I'm put off by that even if it plays similar? I'll see..?

I love how people use the framerate of the original console releases as an excuse to not git gud. So many of us beat every Souls game and pvp'd at around 30fps

Phantom strikes happen because of latency between players. If two people fight and have little to no lag the hit box porn is real.

Demon's Souls is more left in the past than Dark Souls, and Demon's Souls is really needing of a remake or a remaster. I know that a Demon's Souls remake/remaster is never going to happen because the license is all split up, but it can be possible...maybe...ok probably not at all.

Ds 1 not talked about abs left in the past?! Barely! All vets EVER talk about is how 2 and 3 arent as good as 1 and how the world interconnectivity is best in the first game. I dont think you gotta worry dcg darksouls one is STILL VERY RELEVANT.

Man...I respect ya and all but..9.5/10??? For a remaster that litterally keeps the online multiplayer still broken as hell? With all due respect I cannot agree with that. Multiplayer is a massive aspect of that series and when you can be backstabbed from 4000 feets away or be lagstabbed/chainstabbed on top of all the troll builds,it makes it unfair to the players for real. This should have also included the cut content to at least make up for it all. In the end its still a fun game to play(offline) but it really does not hold up well when it comes to online components if you want to be objective.

DSR filled with the same gam breaking bugs and glitches from over 8 years ago 9/10. SoD2 filled with game breaking bugs and glitches 3/10 I call bullshit. Now I'll be honest I love DS1. It was the game that revolutionized a shit ton of other games and is hands down in my top 10 best gaming experience in my life. But there's no way in hell I will give praise to a game that had over years to fix thw shit wrong with it. And the fact that reviewers are saying that the remastered verison is some type of masterpiece is bullshit. It's the same game with dsfix and 60fps mode and some new pvp additions that's all. Hardly any of the bugs were fixed in fact bugs were added. Reviewers need to stop loving DSR just because they love DS1 that's being bias asf. DSR is not amazing it's shit in fact DS2 SoFS is a better remaster than DSR because there were fixes to the original DS2 bugs, they improved upon the graphics and added shit and DS2 and DS2 SoFS are both shit and do a better job than DSR. Now I'm not going to blamw FromSoft because they had no imput in the development of DSR and Im not going to blame the people who were hired to do the remastered version of DS1. But I am blaming Bandai for blantly making such a cash grab from one of the greatest games of all time and I am blaming reviewers for putting their emotions before being unbias towarda a game. DSR is no where near a 8 to a 10 its a 1 to a 3 score game. If any other game would have done what DSR did it woukd have been labeled as one of the worse games ever made. Just because it's Dark Souls doesn't make it amazing. And no I'm not defending SoD2 that game is shit. But DSR is way shittier.

There are remakes and then there's remaster Dark Souls more of a remaster take the PC graphics slap them on the game and raise the frame rate and you get Dark Soul remaster

well to be fair as well a remaster is only intended to make it as something that performs on a modern level aka the ps4 xbox one consoles since this was ps3 and 360 era graphics, it technically is still a "remaster" if the game is now running at a solid 60fps in full native 1080p and can be upscaled to 4k or something of that nature? its still a step up from the original that had a hard time running at 30fps lol and blight town was a mess!!! If this game had "Remake" in Darksouls instead of "Remaster" this game would be a disgrace in that sense since this isnt a "Remake" like a game like Shadow Of The Colossus! but this game is definitely a remaster as i said it has upscaled resolution to running Native 1080p at 60fps from 720p 30-12 fps lol... with no slow down in harsh areas such as Blight Town.. and some new texture mapping that looks better in certain areas... thats all a "Remaster" really is! yet lots of people bitch about it being the same??? when ya it basically is, but trust me..... this is the way to play the game compared to what it was lmao!
