The classic kitchen work triangle set-up would place the fridge on the pantry wall. It would open up the kitchen-dining area and is an efficient use of space work-wise.
I think the best place for the fridge is the pantry wall. It does seem like the pantry could go to the left side where the dishwasher was, or, isn’t the mud room right around the corner? That is close enough to be a practical place for the pantry. It would be very practical to have a small base cabinet next to the stove for a landing spot when you are cooking.
As a real estate investor, I love me some good renovation videos! Already looks so nice and updated. One suggestion on the recessed lighting that we've switched over to in all our remodels is just the small circular LED panel lights: they are about the same thickness as the can light trim kit and look like recessed lighting with way less expense and way less work. We'll never install can housing again! Another thought on the fridge/stove being right next to one another is that in some areas this is against code. In our apartments that require at least 18" between them, we'll squish in a small base cabinet, and it's so much nicer every time I see this change. But I agree with the comments below to put the fridge where the pantry is, use those base cabinets where the fridge currently is, and build a new pantry by the window. You can probably put a small pantry next to the fridge as well, or eventually get a HUGE double fridge to fill that space! Going to be beautiful!
I have a kitchen similar to yours. You will appreciate the everyday countertop space for cooking more than an occasional entertainment seating rearranging. Looks great!
I agree with considering putting the fridge where the old pantry was and open shelving next to the stove for pantry items. Consider where your island is going to be too when moving the fridge and installing new overhead lighting. Y’all are doing a great job and it looks amazing.
A tip when trying to cover paneling is to use a good primer and let the primer dry completely before doing the next coat so that the stain is sealed off and doesn’t bleed trough .
Love the fact that regardless of the project, you guys never take shortcuts. It's all done properly. Lorraine's organizational skills are great. Demo/painting schedule, preprepped meals, it all makes a huge difference. Bravo guys!!
For future reference, shellac is what will cover the yellow bleed through from pine the best. I think it’s in Zinzer and BIN 123 primers but not sure about Kilz. Must have shellac or it will eventually come through. I love a bright, light room and being able to achieve such a huge difference with paint is wonderful! 👌💖
💝 So many suggestions so I will just say great job you three! Enjoy watching you work together. Penelope! Great painting! Be looking forward to seeing you on your next video. Take care!
Lorraine is so competent and intentional! Well, you both are, but as a woman, I am so inspired by her. If she had an advice channel or just a sit down and chat and share channel, I would totally watch that. She's the homeschool, homestead mom I want to be like. 💕
Instead of swinging that cabinet to the left of the sink, use it as part of the island build. Having cabinets in your island is great use of space. You can also have open shelving for cookbooks or whatever. To allow the island to have seating, put the fridge left of the sink into the dining room - just not as far as you have it now. Cut down the size of the cabinet to the left of the sink so the frig isn't too far into the dining room. Don't forget that using curtains over lower cabinet shelves is much easier than rebuilding cabinets to fit the new design spaces. I really hope you do this - it will be amazing! Enjoyed the music as always!
The primer layer is not a color block... It is a sealer and a bleed-through block depending on the type of primer. The tannin's and oils won't come through if you use a shellac based primer. The PAINT layers are the color blocking layers.
I’d leave the fridge in the dining area. Build a cabinet wall on the end to make it built in. You would have a counter next to the stove. You’ll have an island with bar stools for seating. It looks crammed next to the stove. You could also put fridge where pantry is and build two tall shelving cabinets on either end.
I would not put the fridge next to the stove. If you put the fridge in the pantry area you could turn your new island so it faces the dining area. You would have the ideal triangle with the sink, stove and fridge and the island near all three. Looking great so far!
If you ever need to approach another project where bleed through is an issue, try painting it with shellac first. It's a little more expensive, but once I learned this trick, I've never needed Kilz again. I agree about how bright and awesome the kitchen looks! Kind of like with every paint swipe it seemed you turned on a light.
We lived in our RV while remodeling our home. My poor husband had to put the gray and black water in the "honey" pot and take it over to our septic system. We replaced everything in our kitchen and it took over two weeks to install flooring, new cabinets and appliances and do the tile work. My handy man, husband, deserves a raise!! God bless y'all and keep growing.
The kitchen is one of the most used areas of the house. The work is hard but the reward is great. I remember doing my kitchen 10 years ago but had to completely gut it. Cabinets and counter top were done so had to go back with new cabinets. Wood cabinets are a plus. Keep up the hard work. Looking good!
I like painting with masonry paint indoors, it's so thick and covers all kinds stains. I am sensitive to indoor paint, & find masonry paint less toxic.
I love your kitchen remodel as a family.🥰 Everything you have planned will make a huge difference in that entire kitchen/dining room area and increase the valve of your house.👏 I can't wait for the next video.
Happy Wife, Happy Life 😄👍🏼 Look at her, she look happy. It gonna be beautiful kitchen and do what she want so that’s way, don’t have to do it later. Get that project done ✅😊👍🏼
I always loved this part of making a new working space. Love the white. We added a sliding door/pocket door to our old porch instead of a open door into the kitchen. Then used the wall space on the inside to put another work space or fridge. 🙂
🎉 it is always fun to watch these reno videos. Painting wood surfaces is probably the hardest call for me, but you had wood everywhere! It will be so different when you get the cabinets back up!
Another idea for changing the layout-- instead of moving the fridge what if you moved the stove to the location where the old dishwasher was? Put it just offset from the window so you can look out the windows while you cook but you can also have counter space on both sides of the stove. Add cabinets/countertop to the wall with the fridge and put a dishwasher somewhere to the right of the sink or on the fridge wall.
What a difference a day makes! Looks so much better already! The sink, stove and fridge are supposed to be in a triangle. That’s why we suggested putting the fridge where the pantry is. I saw the plug is already there for it. That’s where the fridge goes normally. Build another pantry next to the stove….like stove, tiny countertop, then pantry. You can make it much prettier than the one that’s there. I’m sure it all depends on budget too. That’s where I’m stuck lol.
You might be able to get a dining room table that has a bench built in against the well if you move the fridge there. It would give you more dining room space
Having done a couple of full kitchen renovations myself, I know exactly what you're in for:) It's a tough job, but well worth it. Take your time and do it right. If you find things that need addressed, just take the time to fix them. That includes leveling things, putting new electric where it belongs, plumbing repairs, etc, etc. Take your time;)!!!
Jason! It’s looking sweet! One word of advice, don’t wait to do the recessed lighting! It’s actually a lot messier than I realized. Between the attic insulation and drywall dust it makes quite a mess. It’s so funny watching because we have done all the same things in the same type of home. Paneling and all. Haha. It’s so rewarding though!
Wow, I couldn’t done all that! You all did a wonderful job of it and I agree Lorraine it does look so much brighter and pretty! Love it already! Happy Days! ☀️🧊😄❤️🤗🥰🙏
Loraine's smile was a just reward for all of your extra work. and let's not talk about all the wonderful foods she provides you. It's motivating to watch you guy work together as a family. Blessing
Paneling is THE biggest beast to cover up. Generally speaking, the only thing that will work to block that horrible bleed through is to coat it with shellac or an oil based primer. I learned that lesson the hard way myself. Everything really looks so good, y’all! It’s so much work, but it is always nice to make a space your own.
As far as layout in the kitchen, most kitchens work around the triangle. Fridge, stove, sink. Lorraine has the right idea with the moving of the fridge, and putting more countertop by the stove is hugely wonderful. I think ideally, where the pantry is, should be where the fridge is, but that means re doing that area, which I know y'all are trying to limit the amount of effort to get the update done. It's gonna look great, no matter what you decide. :) I'm excited to see how it all works out and to see how Lorraine feels about the new space :) Lovin' the updates!!
You could use your dining space walls for large cupboards and fridge space and dine on a massive island which would span the length of the kitchen and dining area. As another viewer said, putting the fridge where the pantry is would absorb most if not all of the depth of the fridge.
This is a 'for the future' comment. If you have any more paneling you need to paint use a shellac based primer. It is very stinky but the shellac seals it so much better. Had a professional painter tell me this. It worked great in my old house that had 4 rooms I needed to paint over.
Would not give up any space in the dining area! Having room to host family and friends seems important to your family. Moving fridge to pantry area and building a pantry just inside the mudroom might be a good compromise to having more "landing" area near the cookstove. You guys are a great team! Thank you for sharing!
25 years as a painting contractor: a primer sealer will seal all the stains and even though they look like they’re bleeding through they’re actually sealed so you don’t have to keep doing after layer of primer you just let it dry and seal and then the paint will stick beautifully and right over!! Good on you for using primer most people don’t bother
I would move the pantry shelves over by the window in the dining area..less protrusion and put the fridge where the pantry shelf is..then the entire function of the kitchen would be more functional..my 2 cents worth lol…love watching the changes…blessings❤
If you have a wall with a color that will bleed through, you can put a coat of shellac on it which will prevent the color from bleeding through. Am really enjoying watch your Sow the Land and it's accompanying after show, the Homestead Shop Podcast. :)
Have considered doing a built in fridge on the side of the pantry wall. You could do lots of storage on the entire wall n have the fridge out the way.🙏🏼❣️
Something you might want to look into is a primer called BIN in the read can. It has shellac in it. That would seal in all those stains. It is so good I would use it on walls that had a fire
Oh WOW, watching you paint brought back memories of our kitchen reno. We went right back to the studs. It took weeks. It was in March! It was worth it in the end.
FYI: get a cabinet depth refrigerator. They are (obviously) not as deep, but can put you “old” one somewhere for any overflow. I have always had a cabinet depth.
