No big description message this time. The video does a decent job introducing itself.
Very minor spoilers in the first five minutes. Major spoilers after that. I state in the video when the break occurs if you don't want to watch past that point.
If you want to end up with alcohol poisoning you can play this video's drinking game: take a shot every time I say "hero".

This Crituque is great as alway. There have been a few changes to the grind lately. 1. Characters now start to requie level 3 dungeons on level 5/6 2. The hero building can now be upgradet to provide Characters up to level 4 with all upgrades already. 3. you can now trade 1 kind of upgrade token for anoter (at a bad rate but you can) 4. There is a town event now, that randomly selects 3 of your fallen heroes and you get to decide wich one of them returns from the dead. Its not much, but in my opinion this few tweaks make the game much more enjoyable especialy the part with the heroes refusing to run dungeons from level 3 on was a bit to limiting.

So I watched this looking to get some more information about Darkest Dungeon, and initially this review really swayed me from buying this game. All the things you described looked absolutely dreadful and made me believe I’d have no fun with this game whatsoever. Yet it sat on the back of my mind, so I kept reading and watching gameplay footage, yadda yadda yadda. I ultimately ended up biting the bullet, buying it hoping I’d enjoy the game, and I love it. I’m having so much fun with it and it’s satisfying an itch for a specific genre I’ve had for a long time. That said, your video really made me realize what I was getting into when I decided that I was going to play it, and I feel had it not been for your analysis, it’s very possible I would not have the proper mindset to dive into Darkest Dungeon. I dunno. Some games are just patently bad. I think it's okay to say "I had a spoonful of this gigantic plate of shit. I didn't like it and I don't think I will like the rest of this plate of feces." The idea that a critic needs to finish the whole plate to say "yeah this is shit" seems absurd to me. The logical endpoint of this methodology is that game reviews skew even more positive than they already do, since negative reviews also tend to garner more flak.

personally, my biggest gripe with this game was the RNG. Even having a team of level 6 characters with powerful trinkets, I could do single digit damage one turn, then in the 30's the next turn on the exact same enemy with the same character. When the enemy can do the same thing and you can go from full health to death's door in 1-2 hits, it makes the leveling up aspect seem a bit meaningless to me, and makes things frustrating because no matter how much I understand the mechanics of the game, I'm always at the mercy of randomness, with severe consequences if things don't go in my favor. I beat everything in the game, but a hefty chunk of it was just dumb luck, which doesn't feel as satisfying as earning my victories.

Quite recently with the new updates, redhook has been trying to slow the grind, like how if you fail to complete the Darkest dungeon, and or get a party wipe with high level heros, the game will give you 4 level 3 heros in the stagecoach, and since you failed the darkest dungeon, your party will get x2 resolve level exp in the next adventure, There is even little events that give 1 type of hero a resolve level, like a grave robber or highwayman, To be fair, at least redhook is trying to slow down the grind, its still pretty bad but at least its slightly easier now

Not sure if it's still, but what I last played still falls under this. Heavy reliance on RNG driving game and griiind. Played for some dozen of hours and quit after I sent fairly good group to standard exploration, champion difficulty. While I was in hallway, all of a sudden Void Boss starts. I had no choice over it. I said, screw it, I have all level 5-6 heroes with really good equipment and skills, what could go wrong? Well... Besides Boss being really good against my team, after one of my heroes was on Death's Door, my other hero received critical hit, so that gave latter one heart attack. What usually I would do after I see Deathblow is Alt+F4 game, because if you do it before he disappears on screen and return back, he is still alive and enemy's attack is skipped. (I know, cheater, but F you RNG). But because I left it and game registered his damage, now I'm stuck in permanent loop. Yes, I could cheese it with 3 of them and hope for grave revival, but screw wrecking my nerves, there are a lot less annoying games to play. Instead, what I'll do now is just check for it's ending, I mean, a full scene, better than presented here.

The game got much better than it was before. It had tons of free updates with new difficulties, a couple of new quests like the bandits event and the Shrieker and quality of life changes for free. Now once you know what item does what on the curios you learn it and have it checked in your inventory. You can somewhat bypass the "never again" problem of the last levels among other new things to deactivate. The first Big expansion, The Crimson Court, was fantastic, including a new class, new mechanincs, unique "final level" trinket sets for each class, a new zone, a lot of new enemies and 4 new fixed maps with a ton of exploration like the vanilla game last levels and 4 new bosses. It also adds new town buildings to build that give resources or permanent passive buffs to certain classes. They released a few months ago a mini DLC with a new class, a new mechanic, enemies and quest unique to the class to get the trinkets and see the new baddies. The second and final expansion The Color of Madness is due to release June 19 and for now we know it's more combat focused going for some kind of horde mode with a new zone and enemies and has a new town "shop".

Just want to mention, the game has had quite a few changes since this review was made and the grind is a lot less tedious now. The new antiquarian class makes gold farming runs much more profitable(and therefore less necessary) and it's now possible to cycle one type of heirloom into another in case your one short for an upgrade or have a surplus.
@avalen5515
@avalen5515 7 лет назад
I also never finished this game because of the grind. However it seems that the free updates the game has gotten over the last year are mostly all focused around reducing this aspect. A new Radiant mode has been added that is designed around completing the game in fewer hours. Allowing higher level hero's to enter lower level dungeons and also a new upgrade line for the stagecoach that allows you to recruit higher level hero's from the stage coach. Also hero's being allowed to return to the darkest dungeon. Also hero's gain XP faster, treatments cost less and regions progress faster. Since I agree with many of your viewpoints I feel this is the way the game should have been in the beginning. But I am enjoying it much more now since I feel this game nails its atmosphere. Great video btw.

I think one of the important things about darkest dungeon is realising that the difficulty levels are less about challenge and more about grind. Don't get me wrong... Blood moon is awfully tricky, but as a gamer that enjoys playing almost all my games on maximum difficulty, darkest dungeon is probably an exception due to the fact that the difficult is delivered via time invested and dice rolls, rather than rests of reflexes, skills, or knowledge.
@KeithBallardA

Darkest Dungeon was the first time that a game in early access actually felt less fun when it finished. The launch version just had nine boss fights spread across three tiers, and then you were done. It was already in the ballpark of 20 hours long back then. Now you have 24 boss fights, not even counting any of the endgame, special events, or ambush fights you can find. By my estimation from what I've played so far it would appear that playing through the launch version will take at least three times as long. Why did it have to be this way? It wasn't enough for them to have permadeath, it wasn't enough for them to have all of this recycled content, repeated bosses, and grinding. They just had to go and divide your characters into three arbitrary power categories and limit their ability to interact. They just had to make it so that after one attempt your max level characters are banned forever from the endgame dungeons. They just had to make their already long game have a progression system that's unwieldy, nonsensical, and as artificially lengthened as possible. The more you play the more it feels like the infini-game. At least when I'm playing grinding in a JRPG I know that I'm gaining levels and gear. At least the progress is permanent. The progress is so abstracted in Darkest Dungeon that you can finish multiple consecutive dungeons and mostly feel like nothing has been accomplished. It doesn't feel like pushing a boulder uphill. It feels like a hamster wheel.

Hell yes. I played 100 hours during the lead up to final release, the game just go worse as it got closer to release. For me it was the RNG, or rather, how completely uncontrolled it is, which I feel is horrible design in any game (and I generally like pseudo-randomization in games). Another example is how something do not feel deterministic or properly systemized (how stress is earned or removed in batter, the hunger stuff, etc.). OTOH, I DID get over 100 hours out of like a $20 (or whatever) purchase - but to see a game go from promising excellence to something more niche than many (including reviewers) claim (in the wrong ways IMO) was really disappointing. In retrospect, I don't care about dollar-per-hours-played, I care more about how, over time, the game made me feel. I wish I never even bothered to touch it - there are other games for "cheap" that provide many, many hours as well. The 1000+ I have in TomE never cost me a thing (well, I donated, but let's forget that for a moment).

100% agree. I LOVED Darkest Dungeon. The aesthetic, the narrative, the strategy. But they just got stale long before I was ready to finish the game. I had finally gotten a strong group of heroes to the highest level (and had a B-team that ran dungeons while they rested) and was trying to do all the preparations to run the Darkest Dungeon for the first time. I was a little scared so I looked online. As soon as I realized that I couldn't take the same team in again, that I basically would have to start over (TWICE!) to finish the game, I gave up. I didn't even do the first Darkest Dungeon run. I didn't even see the ending until I watched this video. But, honestly I kind of like it. I understand how "starting over" can be kind of horrific after a game of so much grinding and starting over, but honestly the futility of the protagonists' efforts is a major theme in Lovecraftian horror, so it's pretty fitting.

I got screwed by the "90% of rooms" quest on a champion dungeon. There were 2 paths. One with a nothing room and one with a room battle connected to a nothing room. I thought I had to 2 rooms left to explore, so I went for a room battle. My leper has been targeted with every stress damage attack the entire dungeon, breaking and even having one heart attack. During the last room battle everyone jumps on him and gives him a 2nd heart attack despite using his stress heal ability. He dies, and I finish the room battle. "QUEST COMPLETE!" I cry. I only had that one party at level 5.

I strongly believe that the most egregious issue with this game is that it's TOO LONG, all of the other problems are downstream from there. A shorter game would mean less grinding, which would make RNG/Permadeath less devastating: and the overall experience would be less frustrating. Besides, I don't think anyone would complain that this $12 indie game only lasted 20 hours; instead of 100. There's a reason only about 5% of players actually completed this game: and it's not because it's "just that hard".

Abdullah Al-maiyah I think that the Lovecraft stories are more about the journey as the protagonist is too fucked up by the end that they oftentime has no sane future anyway, and thusly the ending will be unsatisfactory, but how that protagonist got to that point is the interesting thing, oftentimes having no stated end goal helps in this as it doesn't push the narrative toeards a conclusion Take at the mountains pf madness, Dr. William Dyre is merely doing some reconisance for an antarctic expedition when he stumbles upon the Elder Things' city, he goes exploring for the magnificent discovery, not because his escape route is in the city. The interesting part of the story is how he reacts to the alien arcitecture and the shoggoths, not how/if he escapes the shoggoths and how he lives his life afterwards. In the darkest dungeon you have the opposite, you have a stated end goal, stop the elder things. Now the jorney is about building up to the end, especially seeing as the only character with a story to tell is encouraging you to get to the end. If your adventurers had some character behind them then the journey in and of it self could be interesting as you would see them react to these foul things and slowly go insane ect. you don't have it here and you have then lost the only good part of a Lovecraftian story, as the endings always tend to be a bit shit.

You probably didn't play through the early beta then. So many bad mechanics were added for the sake of "muh difficulty" as soon as player figured out a way to get a solid team going. Early access was all about that. See what player do, then add in a mechanic that makes it worthless. Over, and over. Until the game was borderline unplayable and not even fun anymore. Then what solution do you have to make your game works despite all those limitations that you added? Grinding.
@headoverheels88
@headoverheels88 6 лет назад
Redhook was notorious to bending to the will of the "hardcore" players; they were relentless in trying to make the game more difficult, longer, and more punishing. I remember taking a break from the early access and coming back to the new "corpse barrier" mechanic. I was like... "who asked for this? why am i getting punished for killing something?" It just got worse and worse. What a shame.
@bronzeager1298
@bronzeager1298 5 лет назад
This seems to happen so much with early access titles. They have a decent game that people like. But then a vocal minority plays it too much and starts to make demands for more content more challenge etc. The games then get warped around those players and lose sight of what made them good in the first place. Games should be temporary fun, not a lifelong commitment...but some people seem to have trouble moving on.
@stevenpaniagua8463

I’ve watched developer talks and really this game was created in their perfect vision. Through early beta they would find exploits that’s people would do and adjected. They wanted a turn base statagy game where team composition was important and the joy came from grinding up the home base. They have even mentioned that the reason it seems like the dungeons and combat is so styled is because they found that part the most boring of the game and grinding up the base and characters the most enjoyable. When people just started building high first row dps builds, since everyone would move forward, they added corpses so that people would have to build back line dps (a change that was crazy controversial and even had articles written on them how the game was ruined but they stayed with it cause that was there vision). When people didn’t care about stress they added heart attacks, which was also controversial cause before it only gave afflictions so would would just run the same team over and over instead of resting or have stress healers. But they did give the ability for many of these things to be checked off and they even added the lower difficulty and districts which help making the game easier on longer runs.

The biggest problem with the Darkest Dungeon is it manages to carry its theme far too well through its own gameplay. It's a game about darkness, despair and tedium. It makes for a good story if you're into that sort of Call of Cthulhu stuff, but it makes for a really dry experience. Once you figure out all the ways in which the game is cheap, all that's left is to go through the motions, with RNG occasionally setting you back several hours. The issue is there's very little depth to the actual gameplay. It has positioning and preparation, and that's about it. Focus on the most dangerous enemy, kill them first, go from there. Aside from a few hard-coded traps (such as knocking back the fat skeleton causing him to AoE you), it's a dirt-simple system which relies on randomness more than anything else. I like to bring up XCOM when talking about the Darkest Dungeon, since it has a similar gameplay loop. However, XCOM has a lot more complexity inherent in both its tactical and strategic layers. It plays out like a really intricate board game which - with random map generation in XCOM 2 - turns most encounters into de-facto problem-solving, at least up to a certain level of tech. The Darkest Dungeon's combat system is so simplistic that problem-solving happens only once until you figure out the specific enemy. The rest is a repeating preparation and rolling the dice. It may fit the theme, but it makes for a game that grows stale pretty quickly.
@Malidictus
@Malidictus 7 лет назад
DrTheKay That's my impression of it, as well. I like the Darkest Dungeon as a game (albeit with mods), but it runs out of gameplay variety and complexity long before it's actually "over." For those first few hours the game is tremendously fun as you're still getting new heroes, discovering new monsters, building up your town and settling into the atmosphere. The problem is that all of it wears thin after a while. The dungeons aren't as scary, there's little left to upgrade and the initially cool narrator starts sounding trite. In fact, the narrator is a microcosm of everything wrong with the Darkest Dungeon. He starts off sounding cool and scary. After a while, you've heard all of his lines, your heroes are overpowered and he starts to feel annoying. I never finished the Darkest Dungeon. I've tried several times, and simply end up losing my patience when the harder dungeons show up and everything starts to feel cheap. It's not scary any more, just tedious.
@vsear5911
@vsear5911 7 лет назад
I'd say Dark Souls 1 carries the theme of darkness and despair a whole lot better than Darkest Dungeon. Tedium isn't a theme at all, by any reasonable criteria. You may be thinking of futility or hopelessness, which DS again does much better by giving you a frail character that's as good as anyone else and stacking the odds against it. Even the ending is handled better. All while having gameplay that is actually engaging and fair. I realize these are different genres, but it's only to demonstrate that it's still up to the developers to make balanced gameplay instead of hiding behind "artistic vision". There is no bigger cancer in the current gaming industry than undermining gameplay for the sake of some misguided atmosphere instead of synergizing towards it.
@Malidictus
@Malidictus 7 лет назад
God Emperor Chen Goodgulf of Catarina I agree. I'm not a fan of compromising gameplay for the sake of "artistry." You can do a lot to carry theme through gameplay, but you have to remember that you're still dealing with a player, not the protagonist directly. Like with a movie, a game needs to make the player want to keep coming back. If a game's "message" requires it be dull and boring, I'm simply going to pick another game. The problem with the Darkest Dungeon is it takes its own theme too far. It tries to inject the tedium and misery which slowly grinds down its own characters into gameplay directly, which ends up grinding down the player's will to go on. OK, game. You beat me. You just killed my best heroes and put me in a position of having to grind for hours to get back where you were. You win, but I don't feel defeated. I feel cheated.

I am really happy you actually do criticize games which most critics go lightly on because of their cult following and raving fan reviews. It seems like 90% of gamers these days judge a game based on some arbitrary checkmarks. DD has great graphics, sound, varity of loot, progression system, lots of heroes - it must be a good game! And if you dare to criticize mechanics, you are shunned as noob who should go play lol.

+Kenpachi Zaraki I was with you until "variety of loot, progression system". I'm not sure how 2 trinket slots filled by items, almost all of which are useless is good and am not sure how a system where experience is a negative stat because level appropriateness comes from linear weapon/armor/skill advancement which requires grind is good either. It's very shiny, and attracts fake hardcores who can win at a game they can't lose then spam "Git Gud" at everyone, including the people that remark about how easy it is...
@CelerityNova

I'm pretty sure they don't even have a "vision", they just wanted some shiny fake hardcore casual fodder for the masses. They got that, and you have quite a few idiots prattling about "git gud" while actual hardcores are just bored and shaking their head. Speaking along similar lines, apparently a LOT of mainstream reviewers take bribes. Not necessarily from them, but definitely in general, and there is absolutely a huge dissonance between how the media speaks of this game, and what sort of user reviews resonate with the public (hint: it's the ones complaining about tedium and grind). Given how shady these devs are, I'd say it's 85% likely.

I recently completed this game and would describe it as a pearl of brilliance surrounded by 50 pounds of rotting clam. The atmosphere is top notch for a simple 2D turn-based game, the mechanics are pretty tight, and the artwork is lovingly drawn. But the grind...oh man the grind! Dungeons have four basic palette types, each with about 60% unique content (enemies, event items, etc.). These randomized dungeons aren't really that random, as the "uncommon" bits of content are very rare. So run 1 and run 20 of each dungeon type feels almost identical, with higher "level" content introducing a few new enemies and making the numbers less in your favor. Your characters have all their abilities more or less from 20 minutes onward, and most trinkets simply buff numbers instead of opening up new playstyles. Given the number of heroes you have to "max out" to conquer the final dungeon (minimum of 16, but likely 24+ with random deaths and bad rolls), you end up grinding a LOT of runs. Each hero needs to be leveled to max, have their skills upgraded, have their stats upgraded, and require the semi-random procurement of their best trinkets. If you wipe, you could be set back hours of play. This game would be a great title if each playthrough was cut by 80% and more randomized (maybe only certain character types available during each run, or characters having important stat/characteristic rolls that greatly affected how they play and combine with each other). You could even up the difficulty, as less would be on the line if your playthrough was an abject failure. But a game with 20+ hours required from intro fight to ending cutscene encourages safe plodding play from anyone but the most zealous enthusiast, especially when that play is 90% GRIND. And the capstone dungeons after that grind will never live up to your expectations. This game is also encumbered by its UI. There are some hotkeys, but many actions inexplicably require mouse input. I can select my skill with 1-4, but selecting the enemy or ally to use said attack on requires a click every. single. time. You cannot save equipment loadouts or provision lists, so every run requires a few extra minutes of bad-interface prep. A few extra hotkeys save slots would make play more enjoyable. To sum up, Darkest Dungeon is not a bad game but certainly not a good one. Playing to the end is anticlimatic, and you only need a few of the games 20+ hours of length to experience the vast majority of what it can throw at you. My recommendation i to buy this title with a heavy Steam discount, play until you get bored, and watch the ending fights on RU-vid.

A great critique as usual! Chadunda did a review of it recently which I also enjoyed, but he straight up acknowledges at the start that, despite always preferring to finish games before reviewing them, he couldn't bring himself to do it for Darkest Dungeon. I think he clocked in around 22 hours before reviewing it and his biggest criticism also seemed to be the grinding. Having now seen your review, from the perspective of someone who has beaten it, I cannot BELIEVE the amount of grinding involved! It's really just insane to me and it's completely turned me off of the game. As someone pointed out in the comments on Reddit, it seems kind of similar to FTL, except a failed run on that will cost you like an hour at most and it's nowhere near as punishing, unfair or random as DD seems to be, so I think I'll just stick to FTL haha

Absolutely hit the nail in the head for me. Darkest Dungeon is a game that is hard to hate at first sight because of how artistically stunning it is, but when you delve down, the grind and the randomness really detracts from the experience. The bit about being relieved about beating a boss not because it was a challenge, but because you don't want to grind anymore is exactly what I told so many people, but sadly due to the "hardcore" nature of the marketing for the game, it becomes pretty much immune to criticism. And all dungeons you just destroy everyone with no stress. And Boss fights you have to hope for good RNG. Because most Bosses hit so hard that if they get a Crit at the start or you have a bad luck and miss 2 or 3 times it is all over.

I never even did the titular Darkest Dungeon segments. The worst part is people can't even criticize the game's difficulty without being told "git gud, fagit," by some try-hard meat-head with an obfuscating fanboy complex. This game is bullshit. I've played through the game a couple of times, with DLCs and all, and I can honestly say: The "game" part of the game is shitty. Like the visuals, the music, the narration, etc. - they're good. Awesome even. But the "game" itself is just trash. Now you can say "it's difficult", but it's more like "it's random". And random =/= difficult, only gives the illusion of it. + the grind is horrendous. All in all, DD2 better get its shit together, and not be this.
@cpugamer1012
@cpugamer1012 Год назад
@@VG-fk6nk It... really isn't. There's a massive difference between a game being about managing probability and a game being "random." The game makes it very clear what you have to deal with and expects you to prepare for it (with the exception of the final dungeon which is actually bad). If you don't prepare for it, you only have yourself to blame.

@@cpugamer1012 I can prepare all day long, and then get double crit on first fight and lose a hero before they even get a turn. And I wish that was a one-time thing, but it's not. On top, I never fight at full power, I fight at "random power". Damage: Between 5-10. With a crit - 20. Well, I'm rarely hitting at full power - 10, and even more rarely - at 20. Now, the same goes for the enemy, too. They fight at random power as well. Difference is, the enemy has X-number of teams to work with. It doesn't need to hit me at full force each time, it just needs to chip me down, little by little. It's like playing Street Fighter or Tekken or whatever. But most of the time, your fighter does average-or-below damage, never letting you fight to your full potential. And then you have to fight, non-stop, against a whole gauntlet of enemies, who win as soon as they K.O. you, regardless of how far you've gone. That's not difficulty. That's randomness. And if it was only in the fighting, it might be OK. But it's not...
@cpugamer1012
@cpugamer1012 Год назад
@@VG-fk6nk Your perspective, without meaning to sound rude, is just wrong (hear me out, I'm not just trying to be a dick). Obviously there's random elements in each fight... that's how RPG's have worked since before video games existed, and still how they work today. Yes it's a lot more prevalent in Darkest Dungeon because of its difficulty, but those mechanics are still relevant in multiple genres to this day. Specifically what I mean about your perspective being wrong is that Darkest Dungeon is never about one single turn, one hero, one fight, or one dungeon. It's about the process as a whole. If you lose a character to unlucky crits then yeah, the game is hard. But you still have everyone else in your party, plus all your units in the parish, plus the parish itself. Those are all part of preparing for the unlucky crits. Referring to your fighting game analogy (although it's fundamentally a non-sequitur, but I get your point), plenty of fighting games have random moves, too. Really popular ones. The thing is, getting a character or party killed isn't like your opponent KOing you out of no where. Given the larger scale of DD, it's more like your opponent getting the best roll on one RNG move. You're not out of the match, just a little behind. Competitive FGC staples have those random elements, the scale just isn't the same. Lesser note, I'd also say you're looking at damage wrong. As with most RPGs, the max damage of your attacks isn't what you should expect. That damage caps and crits you get are the games RNG in YOUR favor. On a 5-10 range,10 isn't the damage you should be hitting with anymore than 5 is. Over the long haul, you're going to be dealing an average of 7-8 damage. Again, manage probability. Long story short, Darkest Dungeon is a game about the long haul. Over a playthrough, your luck is gonna be a lot closer to average than it will be in any single fight. Preparation is about surviving your bad luck, not just in one fight but in the campaign as a whole. Be ready to heal up, retreat, send out a new team. The harsh RNG doesn't suddenly make the combat bad just because you can't prepare and win every single combat. The harsh RNG is literally what makes the combat interesting, it's the whole reason combat matters. The RNG literally has to be the way it is or else combat would just be... meaningless. Your characters are so much stronger and you have so much more time/skill to think and prepare for the worst, how the hell would enemies do anything to you if they didn't have big swings and long gauntlets? And yeah, it makes you grind sometimes but... that's kinda the whole theme of the game.
@VG-fk6nk

@@cpugamer1012 That's my whole point: It's not a difficult game, it's a random game. Random hits. Random trinkets. Random quirks. Random heroes (from the carriage). Random disease. Random dungeons. Random bleeds, blights, etc. (I've had enemies with low blight resist, who've resisted blight skills twice in a row. Again - wish I coud say it was a one-time thing, but it's not.) It's all about that one turn, in that one fight, in that one dungeon. Cascading failures. A concept I learned well from doing Pokemon Nuzlockes. Applied to this game: On one turn, your hero gets stress-focused. Because he's stress focused, his stress is high, meaning it's more likely he'll be focused again. He gets focused again on the next fight, goes insane. Because he's insane, his effectiveness is cut by half. Passing turns, choosing random attacks, stressing even more, etc. Worst case- he dies Now because he's dead, you can't quite finish the dungeon. You don't finish, you stress the rest. Now you gotta spend cash on resting them, + the cash and grind to train a replacement. Because of this you might send a sub-par team to the next dungeon. Which might get them whiped. Cascading failure. From that one bad turn. That's not to say it's not manageable, god knows I've survived this shit - beat the game a couple of times as I've said, hardest diff. But it's just so damn random and unpleasant. At the end of the day, I'd recommend this game to a friend, as a joke. Just to have them try the first hour or two, agree with me that "it's hard" (random), and then drop it to never play again.

This is a tremendous review/critique, and really helps to articulate the issues I have with this game. I absolutely loved the first 20ish hours I spent with DD, but now that I see what the road to the Darkest Dungeon will require, I don't think I have it in me to grind it out. Kudos for being so thoughtful and straightforward in your analysis of the game. Here's hoping the devs make some changes to make the whole experience a little more palatable.

I struggled through Darkest Dungeon and quit on the final levels The thing that broke me was the mechanic of not being able to re-use characters in the Darkest Dungeon. The game tries to lampshade it, but it's just artificial difficulty/padding they use to force you to have to grind NINE more max level characters. I said fuck that and quit after beating the first floor.

I've heard the game was a lot better when it was earlier in development, but that the devs ruined it by catering to min-maxing sadists. For me, I love everything about the game except playing it. Playing the game is fucking awful and unfun and infuriating and unfair and at times seems even broken. What frustrates me more than playing the game is that I hate playing the game in spite of wanting to like and play it. Its a game I want to like but cannot for the life of me come to like.

@RFC3514
@RFC3514 7 лет назад
I don't think it's that they _enjoy_ it, it's just that they lack the imagination and technical skill to code deep and challenging gameplay mechanics, so they just base everything on simple random number generators. Instead of using randomness to add a bit of variety to gameplay, they make it the core "mechanic" of the game. The end result is bit like roulette: a game of chance balanced to keep addicts playing, but there's really not much _skill_ involved, which means it never feels very rewarding when you win, and you never feel like you've learned something when you lose. Unless you're easily addicted, of course, in which case you probably convince yourself that you have some power over the random numbers, just like gambling addicts do with roulette, slot machines, etc..

You might just be the best reviewer out there. I understand that to do a review of this level of depth takes so much time playing a game, still I wish there were more reviews from you. You are the only guy that actually says what the game truly is, like Dragon's Dogma, for example. Dozens of reviews, even from serious reviewers, saying it's great, and you were the only one who saw it for what it was, an endless non-skill grinding for equipment. What you do at the level you do saves one of people's most valuable assets: time. So thank you! And keep it up! Still hoping you can review more games...

I was there from the beginning. The promise this game showed in the beginning was immense. But then the patches came. They ignored the original players' comments, continued to ignore their problematic stat mechanic system, shoved a load of temporary fixes in like PROT and tried to make DoTs work. They added corpses, the dumbest mechanic in the world, and it just got worse from there. The grind became ridiculous and all sense of fun, risk and adventure was lost. To this day they're still bitter about it. The head dev moans all the time at conferences about the big bad trolls that told him Red Hook was ruining the game. It just boils my piss that a whole bunch of people came along at its release day and gave what was an inferior version of the game a big thumbs up. I hope one day someone takes it upon themselves to mod the game back to the pre-Houndmaster patch, fixes the terrible stat mechanics, and makes an incredible experience of what used to be my favourite dungeon crawler.

Super late comment but weren't corpses added because people were just brute forcing everything with the Leper? And not entirely related to your comment, but IMO a small change that would make this game a lot less frustrating would be making so that Bleed/Blight can't kill a character in Death's Door. Losing a character because he happened to act before your healer in the randomly generated turn order has to be the worst thing this game has to offer.
