Never understood how this band wasn't more popular. Used to listen to them so much back in the early 2000s Enjoyed this song

Their self titled has a lot of clean vocals, which i think is what made a lot of the fans hate it, but its an amazing album. ‘Futurist’ is amazing and has probably their best guitar solo ever and Travis went nuts on that record. Album is a banger. My favorite songs are actually the slowest cause they sound so dark. ‘New Utopian Dream’ is so good.

I feel like I'm one of few people that actually likes By the Starlight. It has that soft to heavy build, has some fun vibes, is a great intro track to DH (as in, someone can ease their way into heavier material) and creates a real sense of momentum. So it leads well into the next song in the setlist, regardless of whatever they play afterwards.

Saw Darkest Hour at the Showbox in Seattle Washington back in 2006 with Acacia Strain, A Life Once Lost, Dead to Fall and the Headliner was Himsa. One of the best shows I’ve ever been to. They were so good live.

Fully agree - they were amazing live. Saw them 2006 also in Manchester UK on their headline with dead to fall and cephalic carnage 🙌🏻

Enter Oblivion is a song they did that's a very similar style to this one. Also, A Prayer To The Holy Death is an AMAZING track from this album.

YES! I immediately said he sounded like Matt Tuck on this track but others didn’t think so. Glad you noticed it too! But it’s still very much him and darkest hour. I love his cleans and I’m happy he’s leaning into them more.

When he did that raspy clean before going heavy at the beginning, I got newer Three Days Grace vibes! I know it's only one song, but it's enough to make me check out their discography, this was awesome!

I don't know Darkest Hour at all, so this was new to me. But I instantly heard that Aaron Gillespie in the slow-moving cleans toward the beginning of the song, too. If you guys haven't ever checked out Aaron's more recent work with The Almost, you should! It's really good.

For more DH clean vocals, listen to the self-titled record. So good.

Their self titled album from 2014 was more metalcore based & had a lot of singing. I always thought John’s voice resembled Matt tuck 100% especially Matt around Fever & Temper Temper era. I love this band. The album is phenomenal. You guys should check out Kill The Lights new album

By The Starlight on the S/T was more cleans than this. There was probably more momentum to the instrumentals, and while I personally really like ALL of the band's output, One With The Void isn't different enough to inspire the outright hatred that album managed. The band would have quit long ago (they've been going since 1995) and John basically said as much when I talked with him in 2016. Band's that like making music and not just collecting pay cheques are going to change and alter their style as they age. Even when it comes to touring. If the bands you tour with play softer music, more often than not, you'll introduce melody to appeal to the audience you're drawing, something that helps balance "sell out" vs being true to one's self. Like Bad Omens. They drew 300-500 people and played niche, heavy music. Now they have diverse crowds where 2000-5000 people want to hear a bunch of different vibes. Especially if you're increasing the setlist from 35-50 minutes to these crazy 90-120 minute performances. I'd never go see just heavy music, and I think alot of metal heads secretly enjoy diversity. It's just easier to throw up metal horns for a 5 minute banger of a Lorna Shore song than actually listening to something that aggressive for over 3 hours (between the headliners and opening acts).
