DARPA Captive Air Amphibious Transporters (CAAT) For Disaster Relief

This video depicts testing of a 1/5 scale demonstrator of the Captive Air Amphibious Transporters (CAAT). The CAAT has air-filled pontoons on a tank tread-like design, enabling them to carry containers over water and directly onto shore.
The vehicle is part of DARPA's Tactically Expandable Maritime Platform (TEMP) (go.usa.gov/vF3) program, which seeks new sea and air delivery systems to enable direct support to disaster zones from offshore container ships. All technologies developed under TEMP are transportable using standard 20-foot or 40-foot commercial shipping containers. This technology demonstrator is jointly funded with the Office of Naval Research, who is looking at it for potential use as an amphibious transport for the
Marines/Navy.

The thought of an aircraft carrier sized one of these rolling up onto a beach somewhere gives me chills.

Btw cool music, a really nice raw old-school 80s-90s feel, even the video quality is almost VHS lol.

making shoes that make a person float is easy, that is one of the advantages this vehicle provides (buoyancy). What makes these shoes impractical cannot be solved without defying the laws of physics, and that would be center of mass.

A fully amphibious tank would be awesome. Maybe not the truly relevant- given the current trending direction modern warfare is headed- but awesome nonetheless.
@JimFeig

Interesting, it is a bit slow on land but great on the water. Tracks might need to be made more durable and taller to ensure it really can go over anything in a disaster.

Air cushion vehicles aren't always practical; I'd imagine one of these would be easier to keep stable and require less power. I don't imagine it'll outright replace hovercrafts (or ekranoplans, for that matter), but I could see it have its place in complementing them.

Oh man, if that was the case, nothing would ever get done... Money is being spent on thousands of things that no one person would want to have to sit down and carefully review to determine how the budget should be divided! I think it's much, much smarter to leave it to the experts. They're the ones who know how the technology could end up being useful, after all.

On the Adirondack Lakes, there are contests, each year ... The FIRST person to (successfully) drive across a frozen lake, each winter ... and ... The LAST person to (successfully) drve across a frozen lake, each spring. ... Hmmm ... Anyone wanna take bets on THIS rig ? ... THIS RIG would be IDEAL in reponding to floods and tsunamis, hurricanes, etc., where vast mats of floating debris obstruct traditional craft. Closed cell floats make it bullet-proof ... Burning oil ? ... We can address that.
