DARPA's Ground X-Vehicle Technologies (GXV-T) program aims to improve mobility, survivability, safety, and effectiveness of future combat vehicles without piling on armor. The demonstrations featured here show progress on technologies for traveling quickly over varied terrain and improving situational awareness and ease of operation.
These demonstrations feature technologies developed for DARPA by:
1) Carnegie Mellon University, National Robotics Engineering Center
2) Honeywell International
3) Pratt & Miller
4) QinetiQ
5) Raytheon BBN Technologies

@Toastpost1uhh, yes you mean like virtually every single "new" piece of technology. There are limitations and a limit to how much humans are capable of advancing in literally a speck of time in the scheme of innovations. The 70s didn’t have AI, LIDAR, EO/IR high resolution imagers and codes that can write themselves.

Years ago I recall reading a magazine article on some guys in Australia experimenting with a gas ram system that replaced the suspension springs & dampers. With a common air tank and valving they were able to maximise the wheel traction to a point where the pressure exerted across the tyres was equal, they had a hilux drive up a mud bank using highway terrain tyres with the wheels fully articulating diagonally. They were bought out..........

Finally taking the windows out and enclosing people in armor. One thing that always bugged me about space movies like Star Trek hey look here is the bridge like a bullseye on this big circle. The Bridge should be in the center of the ship.
@ComdrStew
@ComdrStew 6 лет назад
Yeah maybe if the shuttle had a central cockpit that had no windows and was a safe pod that had a way to deploy chutes from an internal tube if something happened, lets say blow up on re-entry or takeoff, there might have been some astronauts still with us today. Only morons think it is a good idea to have windows in deep space so they can be radiated easier or have something crack the window. If you look at the ISS the windows have big blast shields that can cover them I wonder why?
@BradChadley
@BradChadley 6 лет назад
Kenny S So, Stew mentions space movies, giving Star Trek as an example (which does contain some purpose built warships that still have an exposed bridge), and you key on literally one ship that was designed for exploration and call him a moron? Secondly, even exploratory ships should have a central bridge. It would protect the bridge from all sorts of natural phenomena that it may encounter, not to mention possible hostile contact. It's still sort of silly it's not centrally located. Regardless, there's no way his point makes him a moron, it was very sensible. Why'd you have to be rude instead of providing a sensible, civil argument?
@darklingcorner-yoisakinade7863
Star trek is sci-fi fantasy not hard sci fi. If everything in it was made to fit within the forever changing vision of the future tech and realism it could not have showed us the adventures they did.
@Kenny-bw2cz
@Kenny-bw2cz 6 лет назад
Vali Tyr and who told you that it's fantasy and not sci-fi? Star trek is sci-fi. And if you don't know it, it's time to learn it from me. Star wars was space opera fantasy. Everything in star trek was more or less possible ... There is nothing magical about it. Even Q is not magic. In fact the star trek heroes hated the idea of anything supernatural. ... And wanted to explain everything in a scientific way. Let's see Star trek shall we? Warp drive? Check .. theories exist and even NASA is working on it. Teleportation, check. We have done it already with subatomic particles. Assembling a big man made structure in space? Check... The IIS. The communicator? Check.. you have a smartphone. The tricorder? Check... There are now machines that can detect medi sl conditions. Scientific tricorder. Check... That too. Shuttle craft. Check. We had the space shuttle.. in fact the first test one was called Enterprise. Ion propulsion... check. . We have that on satelites. Cloaking technology. Check. We have electromagnetic bending materials that make things cloaked. So not only Star trek is SCIENCE fiction,... Buts it's helping to create the future. The cellphone was inspired by Star trek. The guy that built the first ion drive was inspired by something Scotty mentioned in an episode... And way more such examples. Star was has inspired nothing. Ok? Now run along.
@Kenny-bw2cz
@Kenny-bw2cz 6 лет назад
Brett Friedrichsen sorry I'm a purist. When I talk Star trek I think of the original vision of Gene Roddenberry. He wanted Starfleet to be a positive peaceful thing. The warships came latter actually after Rodenberriy's death. The epitome of sacrilige is the USS vengence Wich was a silly concept. A huge ship that could be piloted by one person... Why have all that space? It was just big because jjabrams wanted somehow to scare with size making it intimidating. He is an idiot. Roddenberry is breakdancing in his grave with all the crap jjabrams and discovery has brought to star trek and now unfortunately is canon.

@@monkechimp540 in hub electric drive systems means you could have a every wheel be a drive wheel that is independent of all wheels so you lose 2 out of 6 wheels you still keep going, plus you eliminate the bulky very vulnerable transmissions/drive lines also you increase energy efficiency by removing outdated drive systems.

Pratt & Millers multimode travel suspension system looks like something - Based on an old Beano character from late 1960s to mid 1970s - they were called Wild Haggis ! - Based on wild rock/ mountain cimbing Goats or Sheep and had 2 legs shorter on one side of its body - To help it traverse arround mountain tops

Oh please, get outta here with that. We've been fighting a war against people with homebrew mines and ak-47s in the back of pickup trucks for over 15 years now and we've been losing. To think that some fancy tires and driver aid systems are going to fix what is fundamentally an international political crisis is silly. Will these technologies help in other areas? Sure. But right now they mainly exist to give people jobs for the sake of them having jobs, that's it.

Hope nobody has a EMP weapon....we will be screwed with all of those electronics.
@alextheonewarrior
@alextheonewarrior 6 лет назад
killersushi99 it's pretty hard to do, most military hardware is strengthened to resist EMP attacks, and besides that I doubt anyone would deploy soldiers with EMP weaponry, seeing as right now, they're fairly short ranged and even then, wouldn't disable most hardware, except civilian hardware. Which even then, would only require a quick restart of the electronic in question.
@MarcTBG
@MarcTBG 6 лет назад
Alex I hate how people delude themselves with fears of EMPs, hell most consumer electronic are inherently EMP/EMF hardened simple to avoid FCC violations. Remember people: anything that has a clock frequency in the GHz range is generating RF noise and dependent on the power output, requires metal shielding (which most [all] modern phones have) to stay within FCC radio noise guidelines. This metal shielding adds EMP/EMF hardness, besides alot of consumer hardware ICs have some level of static shock protection (humans can build relatively high static charges and devices need to be able to resist this) and as a result they gain further resistance. Not all ICs are built with such measures (think processors and NAND mem) and since the shielding is for internal noise reduction it isn't flawless but you can assume alot of your tech will just re-boot/set from an EMP.

+killersushi99 -- In case the others are mistaken and EMPs do pose a significant threat: one option would be to keep conventional windows installed, with panels of heavier armor covering them. A mechanical latch accessible from the inside could make the armor panels come off (but keep the bulletproof glass in place). That way, if cameras go down, they would at least be able to see where they were driving, albeit with less protection
