Listen, I'm a french singer-songwriter, of course singing my own songs and in addition to this, I am a big fan of americana music, so I sing american songs as well. Anyway, I've written down the lyrics of "passing" (listening to it over and over !) and it is quite a great song in my opinion, but I've got a few parts missing. Would you mind to add these missing parts for me and possibly correct my errors, if some, and send them back to me in a message ? (should be quite easy for an american !). @@rahang4126, you had a few errors but nothing too drastic. I filled in the blanks as well. Look up other of Darrel's performances with this song. Some recordings, he more clearly pronunciates words you may have had trouble hearing in this recording. I find what ever version he plays to be powerful. A southern part native american trying to blend into northern society, trying to find his place and make enough money to get by. The first two sections could be interpreted as two separate individuals, a native musician traveling and remembering that the only time his heritage was present was in the confines of his own home, and then a southern white boy hiding his accent in the north when making a living on the land (ranch, farm, etc) was no long liable. Personally I read them together. Dad is Cherokee, mom is scottish and irish. His entire childhood is based around conforming to society. He's only half native so he is taught to pass as white, keep his head down and blend in. Times change, both working the land and his music career, non of it is liable work anymore. He's forced to work what he can and take what ever abuse to make coin. Then an old black woman, an artist. Living with the fear of racism that is socially excused by the miss-interpretations of christianity. She knows she has value ("I know that I stand for more than you can see") and both characters struggle to overcome the unfair restrictions that their race/cultures place on them in a white male patriarchy society. They search to find a place in this cruel world. All this hate, fear, inequality, and negativity to each other is killing each and every one of us slowly.
