Ewoks! Need I say more? Not really, but I will anyway! It was such a joy to watch Return of the Jedi, and finally feel like a fully functioning member of pop culture. I laughed, I laughed some more, I cheered on the murder teddy bears, and I watched the most iconic villain in cinematic history redeem himself (and then come back as a questionable force ghost). All in all, this has been a wonderful experience, and I look forward to watching the prequels with a new appreciation for the original trilogy. I think I can officially count myself a Star Wars fan, and I appreciate the warm welcome I've gotten from everyone. May the Force be with you!

There was only the one Vader helmet. Some of the emoting is lightning, but much of it is the work of Vader physical actor David Prowse. Prowse was a professional competitive bodybuilder, and so he had extensive training in emoting using only poses and body language, especially to project strength, dominance, aggression, etc. His skill at this sort of non-facial, whole-body acting is often overlooked.

While the other actors portraying Vader did a fair job David Prowse's performance now stands out all that much more. It seems James Earl Jones vocalization of Vader has overshadowed Dave's contribution to the character over the years and that is a shame.

Prowse's performance in the original transition of Vader was truly masterful. There was no dialogue "Nooo" originally, Vader simply looks from Luke to Palp back to Luke then lunges. The full internal conflict spelled out with 0 facial expression

The stormtrooper armor is designed to be reflective against blaster bolts, projectile weapons like arrows and bullets are kinda rare in the star wars universe, so a lot of body armor in star wars don't really account for defense against them.

You wouldn't want his force ghost to look like Anakin as he was in the suit. You'd be looking at a floating quadriplegic with burn scars. The original version made no sense, as it was an older man that Anakin never looked like at any stage of his existence. So Hayden, as Anakin at the point of becoming Vader in name is a good retcon.

@29:40 "You would think that space-aged armour would protect against arrows." - This is actually realistic. Armours are made to stop damage from the weapon their wearer is most likely to encounter. In modern cities, criminals typically have pistols and knives so police have vests that provide some protection from slow bullets and stabbing. Police Kevlar does not typically stop high-power rifle bullets, axes, swords, and so on. If you wanted to protect against everything you'd need so many layers you wouldn't be able to move. Edit (aside): Personally, this was my favourite of the original trilogy and Empire my least favourite, but I saw these in theatres at the ages of 5, 8, and 11. As an adult I can recognise that Empire is the better film, but as an 8-year old it just wasn't as much fun as 1 & 3.

“Why isn’t any helping him?” as Death Star 2 is literally falling apart all around them. “Would you help them considering all the murdering he’s done?” I’m pretty sure everyone on that station had heard what had happened to the previous Death Star and was just trying to get out alive. They likely weren’t paying attention to Luke as he’s dragging Vader. Episode 6 takes place 4 years after Episode 4 so yeah, they knew what was likely going to happen and wanted out! Star Wars Timeline (in case you wanted it) with Episode 1 as the base year. Episode 1 Episode 2 takes place 10 years after episode 1 Clone Wars animated series takes place between Episodes 2 and 3 eventually merging into 3 Episode 3 takes place 3 years after Episode 2 Bad Batch animated series takes place starting within Episode 3 and proceeding immediately forward from it Solo film starts out 13 years before Episode 4 and then bulk of the film is set 10 years before Episode 4 Rebels animated series starts out 5 years before Episode 4 and moves closer season by season towards it Rogue One starts out 13 years before Episode 4 and then takes place the same year as Episode 4 Episode 4 takes place 19 years after Episode 3 Episode 5 takes place 3 years after Episode 4 Episode 6 takes place 1 year after Episode 5 The Mandalorian takes place 5 years after Episode 6 Resistance animated series takes place six months before Episode 7 and then merged with it Episode 7 takes place 30 years after Episode 6 Episode 8 takes place same year as Episode 7 Episode 9 takes place 1 year after Episode 8 Some friends of mine questioned the changes in technology, dress, etc thinking that they shouldn’t change so much. Now I know that Lucas intended the Clone Wars to be similar to WW2 (and this is even more obvious when watching the Clone Wars animated series) and the original trilogy’s civil war to be similar to Vietnam War. So interestingly if you apply our world’s years starting Episode 1 in 1932 it looks like the following: Episode 1: 1932 Episode 2: 1942 Clone Wars Series: 1942-1945 Episode 3: 1945 Bad Batch Series: 1945 Solo/Rogue One openings: 1951 Solo main: 1954 Rebels Series: 1958-1964 Rogue One main/Episode 4: 1964 Episode 5: 1967 Episode 6: 1968 Mandalorian: 1973 Resistance/Episode 7-8: 1998 Episode 9: 1999 As one of my cousins noted, things definitely changed between 1932 to 1999 so it makes sense that dress styles, technology, etc, etc, etc would also change in the Star Wars universe, too. So I am saying all this since you’ll be starting the prequels and the thing people who didn’t grow up as Star Wars fans often bring up is “how different the technology, the clothing, etc, looks.” Well yeah, it’s literally decades before Episode 4-5-6 so there should be differences. People in 1932-1942-1945 certainly dressed differently, used different technology, etc than people did in 1964-1967-1968! One of my friends in LA who had friends who’ve performed the Star Wars as if written by William Shakespeare (you can find the books online they’re awesome if you’re a fan of both) at gatherings have even dressed in costumes from different decades in the US to emphasize the time span between films. They’re all actors, writers, artists, etc so it makes sense they’d have fun with it. Though they usually didn’t pick years for any particular reason other than wanting to dress in that decades clothes whereas I specifically mapped the years onto Lucas’ statements about what he compared the wars in the films to. Obviously the sequel trilogy doesn’t map too well, but Lucas I think was thinking of WW2 and Vietnam War when deciding the lengths of time that had passed between each considering how well the prequels line up so that the Clone Wars basically lasts as long as the US was involved in WW2. I mean Lucas also borrowed from other things, too, like the US Civil War and many other aspects of history as well as from mythology. Lucas has literally discussed this on numerous occasions in interviews and extra content on VHS, DVD, Bluray, etc of his films/series as have folks that worked with him like Dave Filoni. Great video! I love watching your reactions and hearing your commentary! Thanks for making and sharing them!! And as a kid I definitely loved the Ewoks! Even though the neither of the made-for-tv Ewok films and the Ewok Saturday morning cartoon are considered canon, I still love them! I mean the first Ewok movie is better than the second, but that’s because most of what’s used in the second was started for something else and then somehow merged into being for the second Ewok film. But it’s Ewoks and as a kid I thought they were great!

A cute as the Ewoks LOOK, consider how UNCUTE they actually are: 1.Their leader is wearing as a hat the skull of a massive predator. It has teeth, a long snout, etc. If he killed it, it means their world has that monster....and the ewoks MURDER it and wear it's bones 2.The eat flesh. Human flesh. At the end, those stormtrooper helmets were drums....and....the former helmet owners are the banquet 3.They caught Han, Chewie, etc...in a MASSIIVE net with a MASSIVE chunk of meat. What the hell animal is that trap meant for?! 4.They have developed catapults....meaning they are a warring tribe. Who is their enemy? 5.They have developed FLIGHT (hang glider) - which means they are highly intelligent 6.They process LUMBER...all their traps involve massive logs chopped from trees. They are industrious workers or they have industry...to chop down trees that are about 30 feet wide 7.For shelter, they live HIGH up in the trees...to keep them safe from....??? Whatever lives on the forest floor is so massive, these Ewoks keep like 70 feet away from it. It seems like that pretty forest is home to a lot more than we get to see.

Jabba wasn't originally a human. He was always a Hutt. The Jabba scene from A New Hope was filmed with an actor standing in for Jabba. Ultimately, Lucas couldn't figure out how to depict the character to his satisfaction. So the scene was cut. Although Jabba was mentioned in the first two films, he wasn't seen on-screen until his appearance here in RotJ in 1983, courtesy of puppetry.

Knowing the appreciation for practical effects and puppetry that you've expressed, I encourage you to watch the "Farscape" series (4 seasons - 1999 to 2003). Jim Henson Studios were primarily responsible for the alien designs, and the creatures ranged in size from less than one meter tall to star-ship sized. The series stars Ben Browder, Claudia Black, Gigi Edgley, Wayne Pigram and many other actors as humanoid characters as well as very diverse non-humanoid characters. It is far less likely that you've been spoiled on this series, and the sets, costumes and puppet characters are just as complex and culturally rich as one might find in the Star Wars franchise.

Interestingly, there are 3 reasons why the Kenobi Vader battle in ep4 is relatively muted. Firstly the technological constraint of having to recolour the sabres by hand limited how elaborate the scene could be. Secondly the lore reason is that Kenobi was old and weak (as said by Vader) and had prepped for his transition to death. Vader puts in minimal effort to savour the kill he has so longed for. Finally, artistically Lucy's wanted a Samurai style fight given the level of inspiration he took from Samurai movies. This is a stark contrast to the elaborate, swinging off the chandelier, Erroll Flynn set piece sword fights western audiences were accustomed to

Jacqui and Sam...We meet again. 😊 - 19:21 - "Holding her hand like a little kid." That Ewok was a little kid, well 12 years old anyway. That is Warwick Davis in his first film role. He would later play the title character in 'Williow' for George Lucas, as well as Professor Filius Flitwick and Griphook in the 'Harry Potter' films, among many others. - With all of the physical acting of Vader, it is all on the late David Prowse. He was a 6'6" competitive bodybuilder without the suit and 6'8" with the suit. Prowse also trained Christopher Reeve for his role as Superman. One of the more interesting roles Prowse had was as Julien in Stanley Kubrick's 'A Clockwork Orange'. He didn't say much, and he's in the movie for all of 5 minutes, but the sheer presence of him, and his carrying leading man Malcolm McDowell is something to see...it is also what sold Lucas on casting him as Vader. - 35:24 - Sam...I love you!!!! Yes, The Rule of Two. This was instigated by Darth Bane in 1000 BBY (Before the Battle of Yavin 4 in New Hope). Prior to this, there were tons of Darths, Sith Lords, and Apprentices millennia before all duking it out for supremacy. Ironically, the only time Darth Bane has appeared on-screen that is canon is in the sixth season of 'The Clone Wars' and was voiced by Mark Hamill! - I might have mentioned this in a previous comment. I don't remember. Since 'Star Wars' is about family, it's kinda funny that one actor in this trilogy is related to one of the main actors in the Prequel Trilogy. Actor Denis Lawson, who plays X-Wing pilot Wedge Antilles who helped destroy both Death Stars, is the uncle of Ewan McGregor. Onward to the next reaction!!! I just had a couple of comments. First, there's one scene towards the end where Sam says "bada boom", and if I'm not mistaken, that was a reference to the movie The Fifth Element, and I don't think Jacqui got the reference. While I don't think that film is as culturally important as, say, Spaceballs, which I think Sam definitely needs to see now, it might be something for Jacqui to consider watching in the future if she hasn't already seen it. Second, there is a scene in the Kevin Smith film, Chasing Amy, where they're talking about representation in science fiction, and specifically Black representation in this case, and they reference the moment when Darth Vader takes off his helmet to reveal the pale, weak Anakin Skywalker underneath after three movies of him being the biggest, baddest guy in the galaxy with the regal voice of James Earl Jones. It's really remarkable just how pervasive and impact on pop culture and science fiction the Star wars films have had over the years.

With the Hayden sub in, I have no idea what year our set is from (it’s VHS, so there’s that at the minimum) but it was actually with an actor who looked like what Anakin would’ve looked like if he was actually 46 (I think I mathed that right) and didn’t have to reap the consequences of RotS. With that choice it really did mess with me more than Hayden. Because I’m my head it’s defaulting not to his “best self” but rather the last time he WAS Anakin Skywalker.

1. Best guess is that Han was Jabba's "trophy" for about a year and a half before the rescue. 2. Vader discovered Leia as Luke's sister because he could feel it in Luke. Luke didn't know that until just before then. 3. Luke's light sabre is green because he lost his old one along with his hand so they decided to make it green because it worked better in the desert background landscape. 4. Everybody is freaking out because Luke and Leia kissed mostly because she was trying to piss off Han. They didn't know they are related. 5. The "I love you. I know" was written into the script to get Leia the shot to say it to Han. 6. This was Warrick Davis'/Lead Ewok first acting gig. He was only 13. Willow is his lead with Val Kilmer and worth a first time/share.😎 7. Obvious CGI/start/stop with the race through the forest. Nobody in their right mind would go that fast. 8. A little corn. Hans' reaction to Leia telling him Luke is her brother. 9. Jedi is plural. With Luke and Leia leading the way they can reestablish the Jedi back into the picture. 10. Ford wanted Han to die in this episode. 11. This is the best of the original 6 George Lucas Star Wars. After this he sold it to Disney and everything changed. Sadly

15:01 In the Clone Wars cartoon one of Obi-Wan’s old friends describes him as, “a collection of half-truths and hyperbole,” which is just so accurate. 16:04 in the expanded universe (which is no longer canon) Luke thought that advice was dumb and when he rebuilt the Order allowed Jedi to work through their emotions. Many got married and had children including Luke himself. Luke married a former assassin for the Empire, who was force sensitive and referred to as “Vader’s Apprentice”, named Mara Jade (redhead btw) and they had a son, Ben Skywalker. 34:27 Maybe Leia wouldn’t turn now but can you imagine a timeline where Vader found her as a kid and trained her in the ways of the Dark Side? Evil Leia being the primary antagonist, Luke vs Leia in final showdown, it would be awesome. I’d watch that.

The moment when Vader tell Luke "Obi Wan has taught you well", you should notice that Luke has the "high ground". Of course Obi Wan would know the tactical advantage of fighting Vader from that position and it probably triggered a traumatic memory in Vader that throws off his concentration. (Vader did not know that Yoda trained Luke more than Obi Wan did so he would attribute Luke's skill and technique to his old master.)

Would you help him, if it was Pearl Harbor? Attacks everywhere. Fires everywhere. Wounded, dead, all over the place. Enemy fighters to combat. Enemy cruisers to shoot. Failing equipment everywhere: communications links broken, fire suppression systems down, elevators stopped. lights out. HEAT out (space is cold). I can only imagine how many things are being triaged in a single moment like that. And...a single hull breech will blow everyone into an icy grave in outter space. With all that in mind, two people wouldnt notice. ALSO, i'm of the opinion that only the upper ranks actually see Vader on a regular basis and know what he looks like. The average trooper has a helmet similar to his, might have the same black boots. In fact, since Vader doesnt wear a military uniform, it's impossible to know his rank. He would look like a civilian in a weird suit to Private Nobody and Ensign WhoCares.

I love how people are like aww Vader redemption, but IRL if anyone who commits hyper-mass murder and then redeem themselves, people wouldn't be forgiving at all. 🤔🤔🤔🤔 Main character perspective. As long as someone is a main character in a film their atrocities are much more 'understandable' than for irl people.
@tracy4290

Yes, because the movies which give villains a *chance* to redeem themselves are the ones we enjoy most. In real life we either aren't given an opportunity to see someone's entire arc, or they don't realize they're doing anything wrong. (No one thinks "Hey, I'M the bad guy".) It's clear that even Anakin thought he was acting as necessary all the way through.

Why Hayden is at the end is because George thought it made more sense, don’t quote me. But it’s all along these lines. When Anakin died. Obi Wan was like stfu and listen to me. Do all of why I say so you can be with me and yoda and see your son again. Anakin listens and remembers himself as who he once was. Handsome and youthful and a good person. And that’s how he appears to Luke, he wants Luke to see Anakin. Not Vader. Not the older man he was not the broken one. Why doesn’t yoda and obi wan do that? Because Luke knew them as they are, as they were. They also. Accept who they are, Jedi. They followed the most enlightening path persay, and they achieved teachings and lessons beyond life itself. They are who they are. No regret. But it’s not bad that Anakin changed his look to his younger self. In this I see reason that makes sense especially because of who Anakin Skywalker is.

There are some subtle uses of CGI that I think absolutely adds to Star Wars; the background stuff in Mos Eisley in ANH, and the windows added to Cloud City in ESB are nice touches; I have no problem with them. As a general rule, anything foregrounded should be left as is. The CGI is too wonky and doesn't add enough to the movie, IMO. It's just not worth it. People watching it for the first time talk about how good it looks given how old it is, until they see the CGI and are then like, oh, yeah, it's showing its age in that shot. The original stuff is timeless, it's only the stuff that was added that looks dated. It's frustrating, annoying, stupid... it's not a *huge* deal, but that cuts both ways: if it's not a huge deal, why add it? The addition of Jabba in ANH in particularly is egregious. And of course having Greedo shoot at Han and miss is silly and misguided. It's a character moment, why change that?

To be honest the CGI in those Special Editions were the test bed for the prequels. Lucas wanted to try the tech before launching fully into the prequels production. True, Luke's arrival at Jabba's with hood on looks more like a Sith than a real Jedi. Contrary to a Sandworm in Dune, the Sarlaac cannot move... Way eaiser to avoid the latter I think. And if you haven't watched it, you really should try Dune. It is said that Leia inadvertedly used the Dark Side of the Force to kill Jabba because a chain held by hand alone could not be enough to strangle such a mass. Ian McDiarmid was awesome as the Emperor, the only actor that Lucas never directed once he saw that Ian did things way better than Lucas even envisionned. Ian OWNED the role and had fun with it all the way. The guy is right, imagine as a primitive having a seemingly living statue with glowing eyes and seemingly made out of gold talking to you, wouldn't you think it was a god of some sort? I'm with the gal here, RotJ is my least favorite of the trilogy ESB being my favorite.

I always assumed that Luke's black, priest-like uniform was how a real Jedi would normally dress, and that the robes that Ben Kenobi wore in Star Wars were Tattooine-style desert clothing, not his Jedi uniform. The prequels changed that, but I like my head canon better.

But sooner than later you have to watch the despecialized version of the OT as well to know how these films were originally shown in theaters and remained for decades until 1997. The ROTJ changes with its awkward CGI musical number at Jabba's palace and replacing Sebastian Shaw (the original Anakin Skywalker) with Hayden Christensen as a force ghost, was especially egregious. The only way to see this film and the others free of these types of changes is to watch the despecialized version which was restored to its original state but upgraded to HD by a SW superfan named Harmy.
