Remember when we were kids and thought that Vader's suit was just a cool looking, dark lord armor? Kinda like a super villain costume? Good Times!😅

If I was Darth Vader, I would’ve hated Obi-Wan a thousand times more for not finishing me off.

Truly tortured, one can't even imagine that it was bad enough to be lying in a bed of hot rocks on a lava planet, but the idea of being tortured and trapped in that suit for over 20 years is beyond comprehension. His constant anguish was cruel enough torture for his decisions. It's astonishing that he survived as long as he did. Even though, Darth is my favorite villain.

Let me tell you, having your burn wounds scrubbed of your necrotic flesh like that was easily the worst part of the whole ordeal. It’s called tissue debridement. There was always an extra staff member or two on stand by since they warned me how many patients pass away from the extreme pain. They go into shock and their hearts just give out. I put up with it for nearly 2 months, almost daily, I can’t imagine 20+ years of dealing with that.

I always figured the constant pain meant that Vader had to continuously draw on the Dark to keep the everlasting agony at bay.

“His own voice is a little more then a whisper” this is true, in the 6th episode he had trouble saying just a few words after taking off the mask

One of the things that really bugged me in ep 3 when he's being treated, is that they don't deal with the clothes that are burnt and melted to him. Pure agony

The existence of Darth Vader is a truely a living hell.

I picked up a very nice Vader suit some years back. I ended up with the Black Series helmet, I like it better than the one I got with the suit. I then picked up a breathing sounding device to put up by my chest. So by the time I was done, I looked like I just stepped out of a movie.... That being said.. Before doing this I had trained with a bokken and a katana. So when I got my suit on, I was all excited about swinging my light saber.. Well, that's easier said than done. I did have to work at it differently due to the shoulder pads and chest guard of the suit. Remember the breather thing? Try wearing that for four hours. This sound maker going non stop.. uggg.. Lol. The suit gets hot fast, even if it's cool outside. You don't see well out of it, though you do have peripheral vision. The suit paid for itself one night. I had been a SW fan all my daughters life, her and I over the years went to the movie dressed up for fun. (not Vader). She and her husband at the time was going through some hard times so she asked the Mrs. and I to come and pick her up from work one night. The parking lot had very little light and she had not seen, let alone know that I had the suit. We waiting in the parking lot as the 2nd shift folks came out. I was standing there with the breathing and blinking lights on. She came out.. walked down the sidewalk to us... then saw me. I light up the lightsaber and put my fist in the air and told her to join me as we will rule the galaxy as Father and Daughter.. She loved it. That moment alone paid for the suit in full. I used it a few more times then got rid of it. Still have the lightsaber and the helment. Hope you enjoyed the story.

No matter how Anakin's story is told, is always sounds so tragic and heartbreaking. When you have the image of him as a young boy, so sweet and helpful, and then he turned into Vader and he was only 22/23. It wasn't just Palpatine who was responsible, the Jedi training played its part. I have watched Star Wars so many times. And episodes 3 and 6 still make me cry

To those who don’t know: Anakin was only 24 years old when he was burned and put into the suit. And Sidious put him in the suit with all its deflects to torture Vader for his failure to kill Kenobi. Vader could’ve upgraded his suit in secret to minimize his suffering in it, and could’ve had a number of replacement parts to help him like his eyes, ear drums, improved his hands and legs, and made it lightning resistant.

I think that it's interesting that Anakin Skywalker could build and fix anything but he never fixed his suit

I suffered from near constant panic attacks and was barely able to function vader overcoming his suit inspired me to overcome my own body.

Witch is why no court in the galaxy would be able to properly convict him. Nothing they ever do will ever compare to the agony he suffered and anything they try would be seen as excessive and cruel. Public opinion would turn against them instantly. Although a lot of people may overlook it due to blind hatred. The only punishment they could level without looking like the villains is execution but it could be argued that Vader was a victim due to his injuries and torture.

Wow, this adds a whole new dimension to Vader's personality. I knew that Palps had Vader under his control, but this takes Vader 's suffering to unimaginable hights! There is no wonder he is the most iconic villain of all time!

I also wanted to install a shock prod to where his junk used to be that would shock him every time he had a happy thought, but the medical droids couldn't rig it up in time.

All the sudden, I just realized or imagine when Obi wan saw Anakin in that suit how desperately Obi wan wish he could give Anakin a mercy kill while he could...

I have an ESB screen-accurate Vader costume that I assembled over the course of 6 years, and I've worn it on occasion for Halloween or special events. Obviously I don't have any of the ailments that Vader suffered from, but even with the cooling and ventilation systems I have installed in my suit, wearing it becomes an exercise in patience and endurance after the 4-5 hour mark. I remember the first few times I wore it I definitely started suffering the effects of claustrophobia, and the constant whirring of the fan-driven air intakes in the helmet and mask became insufferable. I gradually got used to those two factors, but the suit is still hot, itchy, sweaty, heavy, and it can be frustrating, because you can barely see what you're doing or where you're going, and even doing basic tasks is laborious - you become far clumsier and more encumbered than you would ever think. It's still indescribably cool to 'become' Darth Vader while wearing it, but it's physically and mentally exhausting. If it takes that much out of me to wear it, I could only imagine how torturous it was for Anakin.

I think there's a comic where Palpy offers him a better suit. One of the very few good things he did for him.

But the real Anakin lay deep under a mountain of pain and grief for years, slowly working his way back up

I have the book. I read that he made his own modifications to allow better movement and mobility on his own time to make the suit a bit more comfortable.

Crazy thing is he's supposed to be some type of super genius as well and one he never figured this out in two never improve the design. In a universe with warp drives and clone armies you'd think they'd have bio printers as well to fix amputations and burns. You could argue that Sidious kept him from doing this but I would also argue that it would be super difficult to run an entire empire while watching a super genius 24/7 as evidenced by the whole Starkiller thing.

Always figured that the bad suit was the secret to his absurd power. Always being close to death, always in agony, it makes his connection to the darkside deep and intimate. If I remember right he has modified it before with field repairs but Palpatine always makes sure that its returned to original spec during vader's bacta baths.

I have always been a Darth Vader fan and knew long before everyone else that anger was driving him and I guess everyone else has a bit of this too. I also knew ppl aren't born angry, they acquire it! RIP Vader.

The suit it only part of the problem, the other is that Vader is rotting, his remaining flesh not only has the necrotic tissues, to worry about but also, his organs need a compound of Sith Alchemy to stay alive all this pain just ramps up his Dark Side usage which in turn causes more degradation, His white skin is new skin that has been vat cloned to be applied over his damaged one, but the worst part is that they don't clean the damaged skin for necrosis, they just apply it over it, those 2 then start to rub against each other, If that was not enough, the mask has needles that pierces the bones to get to the nerve for him to feel the outer side of it like its his skin, Darth Sion is a textbook case of Sith being to angry to die, Vader is kind of like that, but worse off because he cannot sleep, and when he tries to sleep, in a bacta tank to get some relief, he suffers night terrors, the only way he can sleep is Star Gate style like sarcophagus that uses Sith Magic and Alchemy, but just ramps up the usage of the Dark Side,

Ease up on the emperor man. Suit was black lot of lights. Made cool breathing sounds and. And.made it great for picking up space chicks

When I think of the horrible state Vader's body was in and the pain, all the time, I, always, recall what he told Obi Wan, " I do not fear the Darkside, as you do Obi Wan.". I wonder if he does, just a little, now.

The more I hear about Vader, the more I wanna hug him.

My theory is that Darth Vader probably suspected that Sidious did this on purpose as punishment for incompetence and as a way to control him, but Vader accepted it as a way to punish himself for killing Padme and turning to the dark side.

My impression from the original trilogy is that the suit was competently designed but that his injuries were so severe that he required it. He wasn't tortured unnecessarily by it (he would have access to the best medical technology available) but it did make him somewhat inhuman, to be relying on technology to that degree to survive.

Dark Lord was my favourite SW book and the way it describes Vader's suit and the pain it causes him made me feel sorry for him in ways the films never could.

Just imagine the confusion of being the one responsible for actually making the suit. Palpatine: NO! What did you not understand when I said get all the parts from the dump, fill them with lead, and tie them together with fishing line?! And you better use the cheap black spray paint next time. I hadn’t actually known this as I haven’t gone through much more than most of the movies. I really wonder why he didn’t first build and program (or aquire medical droid software and modify it) first his own set of personal medical droids to serve him personally and properly. Then design and build a new suit with superior materials and fit. He could probably have made use of cloning technology to regrow certain parts of him to seamlessly fit into his new suit. Wearing such a suit he probably could have used it to make himself superior to normal human ability. Perhaps Vader could have made himself almost unstoppable. He certainly had the knowledge and means at his disposal to accomplish this.

Vaders suit did indeed cause him pain, but he never upgraded it. He saw no need for it. On the contrary, the pain it brought him only fueled his anger and hate, made him grow stronger in the Dark Side.

Imagine how strong he would be if his suit was updated to fix these things-

This was a very awesome video very detailed. I can imagine if Anakin/Vader had met Davros. After Davros got badly injured from an atomic shell. On Skaro. But here is the difference comes. Where Vader was living in a confined suit and control by Sidious. Davros became a megalomaniac. And his creation the Daleks. Which he said that the ultimate conqueror of the universe. Which defeated the Galactic Empire 10 years after the Revenge of the Sith.

I couldn't never tell that the suit was hurting Darth Vader bcuz he was moving and fighting too well for his suit to hurt him like that i tell you that this either Darth Vader was very tough son of a gun? or he had too much pride to show his pain? bcuz he was moving & walking and fighting like that suit didn't hurt him at all

My question is: if he was under the impression that the droids were incompetent, especially concering his new arm and legs, why didn't he do something about it in the following 20 years? Seriously, dude had the time for awhile, even after encountering Luke.

Probably had bilateral high pitched ringing in both ears as well. Tinnitus is a royal pain to deal with. I've had it the last 30 years. For the dead flesh, I'd say there wasn't any scrubbing. Almost 31 years ago I fell in a gasoline fire and ended up with some 2nd, but mostly 3rd degree burns on both legs. I know what goes into the removal of dead flesh and it wasn't pleasant back then. I get night terrors to this day about a certain treatment. They're so bad I end up itching my legs raw Anywho. Once I was well enough (I was put into an induced coma because I developed a high fever) for the treatments they'd wheel me down to the burn recovery area. They'd take off my bandages really slowly because of the ooey, gooey mess and because air hurt like hell on my legs. For the record, I was burned from my ankles to mid thighs...almost too high for comfort if you get my drift. They'd then put me into a pulley like contraption. I'd sit in it and they'd wheel and turn me into what honestly looked like a giant mixing container, but big enough for a person. There'd be warm water in it, about 3/4 of the way up. They'd lower me in and let me get used to it. They then put in some.soet of solution. I honestly can't remember what it was called. It looked like dry laundry detergent. It's purpose was to loosen up my skin for what came next. I'd be in that lil bath for half an hour before they'd start draining the weather and pulling me out to dry off. They'd pat my legs down gently and then wheel me over to a bed a put me down. I'd have to get used to laying down with my legs stretched out with air hitting em. Felt like forever, but it was always about 10 mins That first time they gave me a rag with a stick (felt like a stick anyway) inside for me to bite down on, but I eventually spat it out due to my gag reflex (always been bad)... With really long tweezers (and a lot of morphine which for the record I soon got addicted to) they'd pull off my dead skin, bit by bit. The problem with this is that they also pulled off living tissue, but the dead stuff had to go. Now I've been told that these days patients are allowed to be knocked out for said treatment. Not 30 years ago! I was awake for it all. It was my first experience with real pain. Those first few times I passed out from the pain. Then my parents heard words they never knew I had in my vocabulary, lol. After half an hour (first 4 times, then they gradually increased the time) they'd let me rest and put me back in the solution. That stuff was awesome, lemme tell ya. Sure wish I coulda just stayed in that stuff. They'd take me out, pat me down, put me on a new bed, bandage me up and take me back to my room...only to have to change my bandages every hour and a half. I tell ya, the blisters I got from those experiences....biggest blister I had was the size of a watermelon on my right knee with 7 more inside it. That was an experience and a half to deal with! Sense chills up and down my neck just thinking about it. For the first two weeks of treatment they had to strap me down in my room because when I did fall asleep (thanks to morphine and other medication) I was in deep --- and I started to itch my legs. First they strapped down my arms , then they also strapped me down by my feet. Between my towels and ankles, just tied down enough so I wouldn't move. They always strapped me down when I fell asleep and the call button was wrapped around the bed railing close to my right hand. That way I could reach the thing when I woke up. In my night terrors I'm not strapped down and there's nothing to stop me from waking up to bloody legs. They used to occur once a year every June, but now I get these blasted dreams 2-3 times a year. I've long learned to keep cocoa butter (not the cream), medical gauze, bandages, and medical tape around at all times. If I was Vader, I'd stay in the suit as much as possible to avoid itching parts of my body during night terrors. If in the bacta tank, remove mechanical limbs just in case. It would be a 1 time, hard learned, painful lesson.

Reminds me of when I used to play with my Optimus Vader and Luke Starscreamer action figures on my sister's My Little Jedi aircraft carrier.

When listening to how much Palpatine nerfed Vader it was a whole lot and yet he was still through all of this setback still more than 80% as powerful as the emperor even while being about 55 to 60% cybernetic and robotic

The fact that he was still such a skilled fighter in that condition is insane!

what he hated the most was the positioning of the function botton that emptied his colostomy bag as it was located directly next to his go go gadget roller boots that often lead to some hilarious incidents in the gents. This resulted in many a you been framed moment on trooper tv much to the amusment of the clone army which never grew tired of the spectacle it created. The Emperor deliberatley destroyed all the receipts when he originally paid for the suit aswell which invalidated the warrenty thus he was unable to get a refund or an exchange which enraged Darth Vader as he specifically requested roller blades not roller boots.............they cut his cock off aswell !

I would have thought Vader knew that Palpatine effed the suit up on purpose. That suit was just designed too "perfectly" for him not to suspect that Palpatine had a hand in his perpetual suffering.

Some of the older Star Wars art books showcase Vader being able to function in space. Obviously since there was a great deal of things that haven't been established along with more and more things being added to the franchise

We all fear death to a certain degree, and some of us fear life to a degree. What we should really be afraid of is the grey area in between life and death that many people end up trapped in for a long period of time. I told myself a long time ago, if one of my loved ones ends up brain dead, or needs to be stuck in a bed on life support for the rest of their life, I would give it some time in case of any potential changes, and then pull the plug. I wouldn't wish that fate on my greatest enemy.

I am really surprised that Darth Vader didn't take his life to end his misery.

Having gone through a lot of pain in the past I don’t like how well I’m able to imagine all the stuff said, I was wincing the whole time.

Honestly, I just believe it’s heartbreaking, especially when you look back to how Anakin used to be, sweet and helpful, slightly impulsive and just a teenager. Him turning into Vader was, I think, one of the most tragic storylines in the Star Wars films. Even more so when you look back and realise that all Anakin needed was the right help.

So he had another motivation to hate Imperial Guards. They were watching him suffering.

This was surprisingly terrifying and interesting, I never thought there was that much detail to his suit

Even though you know just how evil Palpatine was, knowing he was behind the mechanism of the suit makes you hate him even more and realize just how evil and sadistic he really was

The first time I saw it, I remember thinking, "Impossible. Why would they have so much technology, and yet not fix anything?" Not only should they have the ability to reform or regrow anything/everything, but also any "mechanical" parts most certainly could be made to look and feel real -- or superior. So they lost me when I learned that Vader was essentially a severely disabled person in a survival suit, instead of some kind of enhanced cybernetic being.
