Join us for a walk in Dartmouth, Devon, UK. We explore Dartmouth Harbour and Dartmouth town, walking down to Bayards Cove Fort and finishing our walk on Dartmouth Quay by the Dartmouth ferry terminal for the Dartmouth Kingswear ferry and the Dartmouth Dittisham ferry. Enjoy the fabulous views of the River Dart across to Kingswear on this beautiful Dartmouth walk.
Dartmouth is a town in the English county of Devon. It is a tourist destination situated on the west bank of the stunning River Dart in an area of outstanding natural beauty. The River Dart runs inland as far as Totnes. Dartmouth is an ancient market town, steeped in history and is the perfect destination for a day trip or a holiday.
Dartmouth is one of South Devon’s most popular towns. With its charming historic streets, scenic river location and surrounded by South Devon countryside it is a must visit when on holiday in Devon. There is so much to see and do in Dartmouth, with Dartmouth Castle and Bayards Cove Fort being two iconic historical buildings that are well worth a visit. Dartmouth town with its museum, art galleries, independent shops and places to eat. There are river cruises, steam trains, a paddle steamer, Dartmouth Castle, Dartmouth Museum and Britannia Royal Naval College.
Catch one of the many ferries from Dartmouth and head for Torquay, Salcombe or Totnes or just enjoy a trip around the River Dart. The Dartmouth Castle ferry is a great way to see Dartmouth, passing the unique Lower Ferry - the last remaining tug and float ferry in England, ancient Bayards Cove, with its cobbled quay and fort and waterfront houses which were once warehouses and boat-building yards. You may also see the elegant 1924 paddle steamer, Kingswear Castle, on one of her excursions.
A popular day trip from Dartmouth is to catch the steam train from Kingswear for a nostalgic trip through the South Devon Countryside to Paignton. You can also catch the steam train as part of the 'Round Robin'. One of the best ways to explore South Devon is to do the 'Round Robin' which includes steam train, river boat and bus visiting the quaint towns of Paignton, Dartmouth and Totnes.
Ferries run from Dartmouth to Dittisham via Greenway Quay opposite Dittisham. If you catch the Greenway Ferry from Dartmouth you can also visit Greenway House owned by the National Trust but previously owned by Agatha Christie.
Dartmouth is linked to Kingswear, on the other side of the River Dart, by three ferries. The Higher Ferry and the Lower Ferry are both vehicular ferries. The Passenger Ferry, as its name suggests, carries only passengers, principally to connect with the Dartmouth Steam Railway at Kingswear railway station. The nearest bridge across the Dart is in Totnes, some 11 miles away by road.
