Oh yay! We had a lovely time in Devon. I'll be posting a video soon of Tavistock, which was our "home base" for a week during our exploration. You live in a lovely part of the world! I used to tell Ian I wanted to retire to Sidmouth. Which is your favourite spot along the coast?

@@MagentaOtterTravels Favourite spot - should be Torquay as that's where I live, but if pushed to choose another - The Estuary of the River Exe between Dawlish Warren and Powderham, lots of interesting spots along there. A great (and flat !!) cycle ride between Dawlish and Exeter Quay.

If you look around at enough thatched roofs you will see many different animals, dogs, cats, squirrels, mice, hares, ducks, when I was young I can't remember where the cottage was, but it had a witch on a broomstick on the roof, that was our favourite as kids, even today I still enjoy looking for them.

Beautiful, great footage of the towns, and riverways. You could get a job with the Devon tourist board. I'd almost forgotten how lovely it is, that part of the county. And those virtually cloudless skies, fantastic. I didn't get into the castle either. They do cruises up the River Dart, and back. You pass the old Agatha Christie estate, i traded the castle for the cruise. Looking forward to the next installment.

Dara, I'm glad you tried the popcorn ice cream; when you were showing the flavors in that ice cream shop, I noticed that flavor right away and was very curious about it, as I too love popcorn AND ice cream. I was also glad to see that the crabs are indeed released back into the water -- er, except for the ones that made it into your sandwiches. ;-) And once again, great job with the drone footage, Ian!!

My former hometown (Dartmouth that is). Unfortunately, due to personal circumstances, I can't say I have many happy memories from here. Dartmouth is best seen in the winter (well, a sunny ☀️ dry day in the winter!) in my opinion. It does have a lot of charm though, with its narrow streets and steps. Two years ago, I made my very first RU-vid video from here. So much naval history and the museum is fascinating. Many USA connections to the town. I believe Dartmouth USA still has strong links to Devon's Dartmouth. Another great video showing us around South Devon Dara and Ian. Salcombe has a lovely boat trip to Kingsbridge (a Devon gem 💎!) tides permitting. The ferry to East Portlemouth is amazing. Thanks for showing the inside of Dartmouth's church, it really is beautiful, isn't it? Take care, Paul 🙂👍

I was born not far from there in East Yorkshire but joining the Navy as a sixteen year old and serving 27 years, it became very difficult to get home as much as I would of liked. The gun tower is apparently also a boom tower (ie it had an emplacement from which one end of a chain-boom was suspended, the other end being supported on the other bank)...a wonderful thing this Google! Like the look of your crab restaurant...More years ago than I care to remember, I once dined in a restaurant in the lower floor of a pub in Looe, Cornwall, which partly extended out over the water, (think it might've been West Looe), and asked where they sourced their seafood...the guy serving us lifted a trap in the floor, and there below was a boat floating in the Looe River...it was pretty fresh!

I vaguely remember catching crabs in buckets on seaside family holidays growing up (but I can't remember how we caught them, it may have been with bacon). Until a few years ago I lived in a small town in the Midlands that was full of Medieval and Tudor buildings that leaned over so far they looked like they'd fall over. Spent a bit of time in Dartmouth as our friends had a flat nearby. If memory serves there’s a plaque near Baynards Fort that marks the approximate mooring of the Mayflower when it moored in Dartmouth en route to Plymouth before sailing for ‘the New World’. Also nearby is Agatha Christie’s house ‘Greenway’ and the D’Oyly Carte’s country retreat of Coleton Fishacre - it was a long old day that one as we hiked both ways! We also caught the ferry up to Totnes and walked back along the Dart Trail, catching the tiny ferry from Dittisham back to Dartmouth after a large cream tea. Well, rude not to!

It's a lovely part of the world Dara & Ian. But i wish we currently had some of that warm late summer sunshine, as it's rather chilly here at the moment. I had a friend who used to live in Kingsbridge South Devon, so you were pretty close to his part of the country. I love seafood, and that crab sandwich would fit nicely in my tummy right about now. 🦀 😆 We used to buy dressed crabs when visiting the coast, a nice mixture of dark and white crab meat, served in the crab shell... oh my word i'm hungry now, and i only had my evening meal about half an hour ago. 😋 I'll have to see if i've got a jar of Shippham's Crab Spread at the back of the food cupboard now. 😆 Cheers guys. 😉

Haha, good luck with finding an evening snack! Sorry we made you hungry again 😁 Yes, it is a lovely part of the world, and we were so fortunate to have sunny beautiful weather! Today it's grey and rainy in Dallas, so we are enjoying watching this video of pretty days from our holiday!

You're spot on with that assessment. Seafood is the best and crab is the best of the best. It's a rare treat for us but I'm also getting hungry thinking about it.

That carved screen in the church, is that original? Most of the screen were destroyed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries but some did survive. I was wondering if this one was a survivor? When you said crab sandwich, I was curious what you would be getting. One time I ordered a soft crab sandwich (Outer Banks) and got a sandwich with fully fried crab with legs poking out and the eyes looking at me! 😖😖😖😖 YOUR sandwich looks so much more appetizing! 😁
@MagentaOtterTravels
@MagentaOtterTravels 3 года назад
OK, I'm FAR from a history expert, but here's what I know and what I assume. The screen is from the 1400's, so it does look like it existed before the dissolution. I think the reason it might have been spared from KH8's wrecking ball is that it was in a parish church, rather than a monastery or abbey. My understanding is that Catholic churches became Anglican churches, and only the very Catholic items were destroyed/removed. Perhaps the lovely screen didn't have specifically Catholic iconography, so it was safe. Thank goodness! As for the crab sandwich, your funny story reminded me of one of my favourite dining experiences with my father. I spent one summer in the 1980's working in Boston when I was in grad school. He came to visit me from Illinois, and we went out to a "fancy" seafood restaurant, because getting fresh seafood was a big deal to us Midwesterners! I love crab, so I ordered "the soft shell crab with goat cheese vinaigrette".... so crazy that I still remember the description to this day. What arrived looked like a huge dead dried spider in a puddle of white goo. I was horrified! My dad had ordered something sensible and yummy. He was SO sweet that he traded entrees with me. I had no idea that soft shell crab was fried whole, with the shell on, and served in its entirety! I felt really guilty that my dad had to eat that thing... and I'll never forget what he said in response. "Don't worry, Dara, seeing the look on your face when they put that dish in front of you was worth the price of admission!" hahaha

We will definitely be in the Southwest again... we love that area. We did spend some time in September exploring new areas of Somerset that I hadn't seen before... it was so fun! I hope you are subscribed, because I will eventually be publishing those Somerset vlogs. I'm just SO behind, I'm afraid!! Editing travel vlogs is slow going for me 😬. Hopefully in 2021 we can have some subscribers meet ups if the circumstances allow...

If you took the coast road from Dartmouth to Salcombe, you will have passed Slapton Sands, the great sweep of shoreline that saw the rehearsals for D Day by US Forces, and a sea-kept secret for many years involving more US casualties than were witnessed on Utah Beach itself. A local hotelier Ken Small of Torcross did his own research and even recovered a Sherman tank from the sea to stand as a memorial to Exercise Tiger, the name given to the exercise that was ambushed by German E-boats in Lyme Bay further up the coast. Some of the personnel were privy to the plans and code for D-Day itself and there was undoubtedly alarm about this intended seaborne invasion being discovered until all such personnel were accounted for. Check the book "The Forgotten Dead" by Ken Small (sadly no longer with us). My family lived in and around Dartmouth for many years before and after the Second World War and I still have family to get me visiting South Devon.. Your video is very appealing and you were certainly blessed with the right weather!!

Wow, I did not know about that part of World War II history! How sad! We really love South Devon. I’m hoping to get back there this summer again. I’m glad that you have family there and get to visit on occasion yourself!💕 Thanks so much for watching, and taking the time to leave such an interesting comment! I really appreciate it. Cheers! @@MagentaOtterTravels There was a heavy concentration of US armed forces in the area, with the Dart filled with all sorts of craft preparing for D-Day. The land around Slapton was cleared of local residents and given over to the US 4th (?) Army for its use as it was seen as very similar to what might be faced in France, even to the use of "live ammo"!. Ken Small was recognised by President Reagan for his work in bringing to light the tragedy of Exercise Tiger...and allowing family descendants as well as survivors closure in the awareness of what had hitherto been kept hidden. An annual remembrance has been a feature at the Sherman tank memorial for many years now.

Always best to keep Colonials outside..... Nice to hear you call the sea ' the sea' and not the 'ocean', as per most Colonial Cousins. Brits don't use the term 'ocean' very often to refer to the general sea, rather only when talking about a specific ocean - Atlantic Ocean etc. Crab/shell fish... yuck, I would sooner starve.....
@MagentaOtterTravels
@MagentaOtterTravels 3 года назад
Yes, I learned a couple decades ago to not say "ocean" but to say "sea" instead. We NEVER say "sea" here in the states! I will have all the crab and lobster... and you can have all my mince pies, marmite and Jaffa cakes... deal?
