Hello, and welcome back to another train trip report on my channel.
In this video I will be travelling on-board a GWR 5205 Class + BR Mk1 carriage from Paignton to Kingswear, on the Dartmouth Steam Railway!
My trip today is on-board the first heritage railway I have featured on this channel, running on the line between two of South Devon's tourist hotspots. It's a scenic journey, reminiscent of how holidaying in the UK would have been many years ago.
Enjoy the video. :)

Dartmouth Station on the other side of the river was the only mainline railway station in the country where there were no tracks or of course trains. You could buy a ticket there for anywhere in the country then get on the railway ferry across to Kingswear for the train. Carriages for such as London would there waiting and be joined to the mainline expresses at Newton Abbot (from memory)

We traveled this line yesterday as part of the Midland Blue Pullman trip from Peterborough to Dartmouth, we joined at Finsbury Park. It included the ferry trip in the price with about three hours or so to wander. Saw the two steam services, one passed us at Goodrington and I've in the station at Kingswear. Highly recommend the Blue Pullman, fantastic trip, top notch service from dedicated stewards, really brought back the feel of luxury travel.

Hope you enjoyed it! Around 10:30, almost all heritage lines operating stock with old toilets have long since taken them out of use, as they are old style ones with no retention tanks etc, and they usually have facilities at stations. Your mention of the ‘round robin’ trip reminded me of my first ever trip on that line - before it was taken over from BR, so Kingswear was the end of the branch from Newton Abbot, not Paignton. On that occasion, it was a special tourist train from South Wales, which took us to Totnes, where one of the Dart Valley railway steam locos came on and took the train to Buckfastleigh and back, then we walked over to a boat that took us down the Dart to Kingswear, during which time the train was worked empty stock to Kingswear, and we got on there for the journey home. Early 1970s, that was!

Nice Xd programme really am enjoying your content please keep up the good work I think soon you should try a class 150 or158 review gwr and compare all of the Gwr services and order them 1ST to 5th? Like do the 57 43 150 158 and 800? Because I reckon that would become a fast trending series on here and high popularity

@physiocrat7143
@physiocrat7143 2 года назад
Mk 1 stock has a belt driven dynamo and batteries under each vehicle but there are electrical connectors between the coaches in case one fails. The original Mark 1 stock had Saturn-style ceiling fittings plus reading lights over the windows which you can see in the videos. It is a low voltage system. Should work efficiently with LEDs.

I imagine the power sockets are used by cleaners when the carriages are stationary & plugged directly into the mains. Saves dragging a massive extension lead.

@@charleskd09Hi What is the railway doing about the closed stations at Goodrington & Churchston? Churchton is looking dilapidated and bits falling from the overbridge from recent pictures. Are they being demolished or are you going to do the decent thing and re open for passenger use? No other heritage/tourist line had done this as Covid had by and large ended.

@@alantraish3368 Good afternoon, Your comment has been escalated to myself. We can confirm that trains haven't called at Goodrington Sands, Churston or Greenway since 2019. We also inform you that these stations are now closed for at least this and next season. If you have any further questions, please do enquire to me on this thread, Reagrds, Charles Paignton Station Master & General Manager

@@charleskd09 With all due respect this isnt saying why they are now permanently closed. What about the locals at the beach or at Churchton? It doesnt look good for the railway does it? Again I ask are going to demolish all the infrastructure at these stations to save on maintenance? Is it just a cost cutting exercise? Business model perhaps?
@charleskd09
@charleskd09 9 месяцев назад
Hello @@alantraish3368 During the pandemic due to social distancing we had to run a more frequent service so we could carry as many passengers as possible, in order to do this we had to remove the station stops at Goodrington and Churston. We have continued this practice for reasons I have discussed below: The vast majority of our passengers travel between Paignton and Dartmouth and then onto a boat trip on the river Dart, very few passengers got on/off at the intermediate stations. In previous years we had no prior knowledge of how many people would be getting on the trains at these stations so always had to leave space vacant on the trains just in case people got on, this could mean leaving a rather large queue of people at Paignton who are prepared to pay a full fare compared to those at Goodrington & Churston. Currently we are able to provide a much more frequent service between Paignton and Kingswear, offer allocated seating which makes the passenger experience better as there no need for passengers to pile onto the train to find seats for those they are travelling with, and not stopping allows for better coal consumption and less wear and tear on the locomotives. Because of this we are in a much better financial place then we were only a few years ago and are now able to invest in more locomotives & rolling stock to keep the railway going which is the main aim of the business. The stations are not closed indefinitely but are assessed on a year on year bases and maintenance is carried out to keep the stations in usable condition. We have a small volunteer group at Churston who do a good job to keep the station looking presentable. Any further questions please let me know. Kind Regards Jack Gibson MSc Railway Operations Manager

It looks like you had to go all the way out of the station to go all the way back in. Is there no gate to allow you direct access from the network rail side of the station to the heritage side? At Aviemore there is a fence between the Network Rail and Strathspey Railway sides of the station, but there is a gate to access the heritage railway side. Also, I approve of the name "Dave" for a carriage. 😁

Steam trains are extremely expensive to maintain and run. Maintenance is more complex and expensive, and (at least in the US) insurance on just the steam locomotive itself can easily be over $1M. That is just for having an operating steam locomotive, not for insuring anything else on the railway.
