I use a round piece of parchment paper over what ever pie I was cooking. Allows me to leave the pie in longer to fully cook. Sometimes I double the parchment rounds. Finally, I also press down on the top of the pie maker with a kitchen towel for about 30 seconds (hot to the tough) with some force to ensure the top of the pie maker connects with the food. This work well for me.
I have quite a few of these DASH appliances. I’ve use a few, mostly the waffle maker and the air popper. Love them both. I have a pie maker, Bundt cake maker, rice cooker, dog biscuit maker and many more. They are all great.
I am passionate about Cornish pasties. Your solution sounds a lot easier than making a “real“ one from scratch with chopped potatoes and rutabagas and turnips and stuff. About five years ago when we were in London and it was our last day and we didn’t have anything particular to do and we still had another day left on our rail pass we decided to take the train out to Penzance - a dash to Cornwall to have a true Cornish pasty. We had less than an hour in town to buy our pasties before the turnaround and we really needed to catch the return train because it’s a 6 hour train ride each way. It was a long way to go for a lark, but we had real lamb Cornish pasties in Cornwall. (I have to say that they were heavy with grease and salt and not what we’re used to here, but I could see that it would keep a Cornish miner nourished all day.)
Try a piece of parchment paper. Crumble it up then flatten it out .place on bottom of maker, add crust, ingredients, then the top. Fold over the rest of the parchment paper on top. it helps so it does not burn. I also plug in once all ingredients are in and ready to cook not before
I have 2 solutions that might work for the crust. Cut out a ring with foil to keep edges from burning then remove to brown while it finishes cooking. For under cooked crust. Place crust in pie maker then close lid to cook the bottom first then add filling and top to finish. Let me know if you try this.
Know it has been a while but- tried this a few different ways- rolled foil ring cut out works while cooking the crust- then regular flat sheet ring for the filling and stuff- doing pumpkin pies- you may have saved pies for me. (yay not just frying eggs in it)
Great review, thank you. If you want a great crust for your pumpkin pie, bake the crust first then pour in the pumpkin mixture. 😊 My favorite pies are apple, lemon meringue, coconut and chocolate cream!
Thanks for the review. I just got one for only $5.99. It's a present but I plan to make mini pies on new years eve with the kids. I think we'll give the crust a few minutes on it's own before filling. We'll also make the filling ourselves so they will be thickened and hot from the stove before adding .
I just picked up the pie maker at Target because it was $5.99, or so? Came here to see your review. It is just me and my husband now, so I thought this would be great in the evenings when we crave something sweet and don't need a whole pie. I guess I will play with it as well
Just a thought but your pumpkin pie filling might have been too runny. I usually buy it canned and it seems more dense. Thank you for the review always enjoy your videos!!
I roll out the store brought crust & pastry dough as it's too thick just like baking for regular oven (not much just a little). I'd cover the crust with foil just like baking any pie in a regular oven. I'll buy one, or the bundt cake pan because now I'm cooking for one since my husband passed I haven't been cooking like I used to.
This unit doesn't get as hot a regular oven (the plastic housing would melt). It's really only two hot surfaces, somewhat like a waffle iron, to cook pie crust that's in direct contact. The pies in the pictures in the recipe booklet were probably partially cooked in the mini cooker and then finished in a regular oven. The reason that the mini bundt cakes cook completely is because there's more surface area against the heating plates and there's less thermal mass that's not in contact with a heated surface to bring up to cooking temperatures. If you use fully cooked fillings, it works really well. And pre-made pie fillings, apple butter or pumpkin butter works okay. Just keep in mind that any fillings that are cooler that room temperature may not fully heat through and it won't cook any raw fillings.
I think this would be great if you needed to make a lot of mini pies. You could start them in this for 3 or 4 minutes and then transfer to a sheet pan in the oven to finish baking. You get a perfectly shaped pie with crimped edges and no need for a bunch of little pans.
Thanks for sharing I am a diabetic with a sweet tooth this would be good to do as you said just bake it part way and finish in the oven it would be great for chicken pot pies
@@yourdailybread8611 if you still have trouble getting the bottoms completely done my suggestion is to go to walmart & pick up a couple cookie sheet trays ( the disposable kind , tho you DON'T HAVE to dispose of them until after a few uses ) the ones with the stretched steel open vented look to them to get maximum air flow under the pies should do the trick ...👌👍👋💃❤💋
I love the egg cooker; I think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread because I HATE removing egg shells, but with the dash it's a breeze. My mom & oldest sis always laughed at me and my hard boiled egg calamty.
For the pumpkin & breakfast pies that are more liquid filling, you could try baking the crust for a minute or so before adding the filling, then bake for the recommended time. That might help with the undercooked crust. You may have to add pie weights to keep the crust from rising on the bottom. I'd be interested in baking meat pies in that li'l guy. Thanks for the review.
I had the same experience with this product! Crust was either under or over cooked and some of the fillings just didn’t cook enough. I did try a chicken pot pie that was probably the best one for this machine because the filling was pretty much precooked.
I have one too. Don’t have the undercook problem. Cook till golden brown…cook a little longer. Also, lay the dough even & flat for even for even browning. Makes a difference💙
This Mini Pie Maker is so COOL! When I googled this AWESOME product, I see its available also here in Mexico! Thanks for sharing 2c Chick, liked and greetings from Querétaro! As for my favorite pie, gotta be Sweet Potatoe Pie!
I really appreciate you doing the different tests and showing the REAL results. I was planning to buy this to make my vegan pumpkin and sweet potato pies and I think I'll pass.
Its the same device with a different plate.Dash why dont you make interchangeable non stick plates and one device. You could charge around 5 to 10 for each plate.you could still make money and you probably would sell more.I like your products but I have limited space.I already have the egg maker and the waffle maker.I would buy more plates.
I was thinking the same thing! What a waste of resources to repeat the electronics on every single device. I'd wager that it's all the same innards, and just different cooking surfaces.
Hi! I'm a fan and enjoy your reviews. May I suggest you precook the dough in the Dash baker before filling them? When I make myself deep dish pizzas, I precook the dough for 5 minutes in the oven before adding the sauce and cheese and then returning it to the oven to cook at the normal duration. So try precooking them for a couple of minutes. That may solve the issue of the dough being uncooked where it meets the filling. Also, do you think warming up the fillings a bit (like the apple one) would help the fillings cook more quickly? My favorite is peach pie. Edit: I just noticed Donna Ostrin's and Glinda Ford's comments. I think they definitely have the right idea! 😁
Too bad this didn’t work better! I was hoping that it would because using the oven heats up the house so much. That wasn’t a bad thing when I lived further north, especially in the Fall and winter, but now it’s just so hot... 🥵
great review! especially happy to see the puff paste included for comparison, as well as no upper crust, regular upper crust, and lattice upper crust. my dash mini bundt and mini pie makers arrived today, so have not used them yet, but did watch both of your videos just now, as well as having done some research prior to ordering. i didn’t go through all 151 comments 😂 but i noticed a few suggestions here and elsewhere that looked helpful. i’m only commenting on the pie maker here because, as you mentioned, the mini bundt seems a lot more straightforward and just works!i’m sort of sorry i ordered the pie maker now. i might check out the cuchina pro which one of your other commenters said bakes a lot more evenly than the dash. also just noticed qvc had a vid on a dash pie maker which flips, like some waffle makers - don’t know if it’s still available, and did not catch the cost, but that might eliminate the underdone-in-places top crust. 1. re burned crust edges on pumpkin pie, your idea of cutting the lower crust out smaller so as to not extend into the crimped edge area is great! as well as your suggestion to make sure to put enough filling in so that the whole upper crust is touching the top surface of the maker 2. and cutting out aluminum foil to cover the crust edge before it overcooks makes sense. 3. for undercooked crusts, the instruction booklet does say to roll the pie crust a little thinner than usual, specifically mentioning pre-made pie crusts, which you usually don’t have to roll at all, so that might help with the undercooking. 4. and also for undercooked crust, you could pre bake the crust before filling. 5. for undercooked filling, maybe get that nice and hot before pouring or scooping on top of lower crust. but really, i think the pie maker is just too much trouble. looking forward to mini bundts though!
This reminds me of those sandwich makers that there were infomercials for back in the 90s… I wonder how crescent or biscuit dough would work? The concept for this is great but it needs more wirk…
Dash has been around since 2010; I love their egg cooker as I hated boiling eggs and dealing with shells that tore up the eggs even as I followed the Professors ( Mom & Sister's) step by step instructions for dummies. I use the Dash griddle to heat up burgers ect; I wrap them in foil (microwaved heat up's are nasty) for some foods. I have purchased kitchen small appliances costing hundreds that are simply junk. I roll out the pasty & pie dough a little because it's too think and cover the rim (just like baking any pie) with foil or a store bought crust protector.
I've always been kind of a fan of DASH appliances - cheap, single-serve, gimmicky. Could probably just use a little pie pan of the same size (which I do) and make something that turns out much better. That being said, I do keto and have had bariatric surgery so my stomach's kind of smallish, and these all seem to make about the right-sized meals - could work out using some of those recipes! Although it seems you ran into some troubles getting a positive result from anything other than a straight-up pie-crust against the cooking surface to work right. I get the feeling this thing doesn't work well with filling that needs to set up or doesn't have much surface contact in the cook process, which is disappointing. But that being said, DASH products are fairly cheap, and I'd probably use fillings like chili or other savory ingredients that aren't very liquidy - which I think would result in some pretty awesome eyes. ... PIES! It would make some awesome pies I meant!! Oh gosh😍
So many pies listed in the comments! I’m gonna have to look up shoo fly and Indiana sugar cream. I think my favorite so far is Dutch apple pie though! Butterscotch and custard are also in my top 5! For pecan pie, lots of people say that it is too sweet...until they try mine. The secret? Use more pecans!
Look up Ken Click on RU-vid. He came up with the ultimate pie crust for the Mini Dash Pie Maker! It cooks on top! Also...fill your pie full, and high enough for it to touch the inside top lid.
I have something similar that does smaller ones. I haven't used it in awhile but didn't use pie dough I think I used biscuits or crescent rolls that I just cut into the circles. They were good.
I love the concept but too bad the results were less than hoped. I love apple pie most of all by far. Cherry is also a good choice for me. Considering the T-shirt, you should have tried making a beet pie.
I'm not very impressed with this product, from watching this video. Not that you did anything "wrong" - I probably would have tried the same things you did. These "Dash" mini apppliances are cute and all, but not very practical for "family" cooking. You'd have to cook them one at a time, and by the time you've made one for everyone, you could have just baked a pie in the oven. Might be better for singles/dorms/barracks etc? I see in the comments that others have discovered little "tricks" to get more even cooking and such - but I still think this just isn't a product for me (cooking for 3, at the very least). I do appreciate your review very much - it was honest and practical.
I'm kinda thinking that they do use the top crust cut for a pumpkin, let it cook for 5-6 minutes, and then add the rim of the crust to get the pretty edge. I don't see how else they could do that - unless the pictures they are publishing in the booklet are false advertising.
How they got those pie crusts to cook I don’t know. They cheated. If you are using a canned pie filling that is essentially already cooked, then you are just using this to brown the crust, and you should be mostly okay. But too much heat is escaping out the sides to expect this to cook the filling like an oven. Pie making is pretty easy and enjoyable. But like many things in the kitchen, it’s time consuming. Sometimes you just can’t beat the old fashioned way.
After your last Dash review, not only was I inundated with Dash videos, also Dash ads we're showing up in my Gmail account. Google owns RU-vid, so I wasn't surprised at all on both accounts. Pumpkin. Good video.👍
I was told to roll the crust dough thinner. About half the width of regular pie crust. I found it odd that they didn't offer a pie crust recipe. Would have liked to get the dough cutter thing.
I found an awesome pie crust recipe for the Dash Mini Pie Maker on RU-vid. It’s on “Ken Click’s“ channel & it’s called the “Ultimate Mini Pie Maker Crust“ I hope this helps!
Disappointing performance. I first thought the mini pie maker might be my second Dash purchase, but it seems it doesn't actually bake very well; just browns the crust on contact. Won't be buying it. It is good it includes the cutter for the crust. Thanks so much for trying it out. Very helpful!!
try cutting a piece of aluminum foil in a circle cut out the middle to fit just the edges. Like you would on a regular pie. I would spray the bottom with a butter flavor spray oil just to brown it. Cook the bottom crust a few minutes before you add the filling and top. See if that would bake it thoroughly.
Great review and thanks for being honest. Gooseberry, raspberry, apple, dutch apple, pumpkin, rhubarb, pecan, and the list goes on, but i will not eat cherry or mince meat pie.
Maybe if you partially cook the crust Empty and. After 2 minutes you put the pie stuff in there and then cook it another 2 to 3 minutes. Maybe that would work out Better Just athought
I had bought one of these and totally forgot about it.. I woke up this morning to see what I could do but the outside definitely cooked.. borderline burned but the inside was very raw .. the cooked bit tasted great but definitely raw on the inside. I did look up another gadget from the same company that’s just for cooking the pie crust/Bowl though.. it’s like $8 more but Target has them in stock online too.
Thank you for your Dash review. I really didn't think that it would work well for the same reason. I couldn't imagine how the crust would cook and not burn. My favorite pie is Apple. Have you thought of reviewing the dash pizzelle maker? Love watching you. Thank you for being honest. Hugs and blessings
I would put shredded cheddar cheese on top of my apple filling. Think that would improve it, then add either heavy cream when I serve it, whipped cream, or Vanilla Ice Cream. Yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmy
I've got a few of the Dash products, but I don't think this once cooks it thoroughly, or worse, burns it. I think I'll pass on this gadget. Nice review.
